Woman hit and killed by car while crossing busy Richmond street

A woman has died after being struck by a car while crossing a busy street in Melbourne's inner-east on Sunday night.

The woman, aged in her 60s, was crossing the intersection of Burnley and Murphy streets in Richmond when she was hit by a Nissan Patrol four-wheel-drive about 7.15pm.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said paramedics tried to revive the woman but she died at the scene.

The driver, a 53-year-old man, stopped at the scene and was arrested by police.

"The Richmond man is currently in custody and assisting police with their enquiries," spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said.

He was charged with culpable driving causing death and will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

Detectives would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw a blue or silver Nissan Patrol four-wheel-drive with black wheels driving in Richmond prior to the collision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The woman's death brings the state's 2017 road toll to 125.
