Fifteen years ago, English celebrity chef, television personality, food writer and campaigner on food and environmental issues, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall embarked on an experiment in sustainability and self-sufficiency. He moved to a cottage on a small land-holding in Dorset and set about learning how to grow his own produce, raise livestock and become part of a community where sharing not only knowledge, but the fruits of farm labour, were an important part of life. Hugh takes that experiment in downshifting and the message of sustainability Down Under. Hugh hands the baton to Australian counterpart and Tasmanian chef, Paul West, who faces new challenges as he attempts to set up his own farm near the historic and picturesque village of Central Tilba on the NSW Far South Coast.

This is the story of what life was like for the people who lived in the slums and how their plight came to the attention of the world and gave birth to a fledgling welfare system. The volunteers have a personal connection to the slums, and will now need to make the slum their home, feed themselves and make enough money to pay their rent for a full four weeks.

In this first episode, both groups face immediate life-or-death search for drinking water. The women find a lagoon, but drinking from it could have serious consequences. Exhaustion and hostile tropical weather cause a row amongst the men, and the women suspect they may not be alone.

The Hollow Crown brings together four filmed adaptations of Shakespeare's History Plays. King Richard (Ben Whishaw) is called to settle a dispute between his relatives.

King Richard (Ben Whishaw) is called upon to settle a dispute between his cousin Henry Bolingbroke (Rory Kinnear) and Thomas Mowbray (James Purefoy). Richard calls for a duel but then halts it just before swords clash. Both men are banished from the realm. Richard visits John of Gaunt (Patrick Stewart), Bolingbroke’s Father, who, in the throes of death, reprimands the King. After seizing Gaunt’s money and lands, Richard leaves for wars against the rebels in Ireland. Bolingbroke returns to claim back his inheritance. Supported by his allies, Nothumberland (David Morrissey) and the Duke of York (David Suchet), Bolingbroke takes Richard prisoner and lays claim to the throne.
