The Gila River (/ˈhiːlə/; O'odham [Pima]: Keli Akimel or simply Akimel, Quechan: Haa Siʼil) is a 649-mile (1,044 km)tributary of the Colorado River flowing through New Mexico and Arizona in the United States. The river drains an arid watershed of nearly 60,000 square miles (160,000 km2) that lies mainly within the U.S. but also extends into northern Sonora, Mexico. Indigenous peoples have lived along the river for at least 2,000 years, establishing complex agricultural societies before European exploration of the region began in the 16th century. However, Euro-Americans did not permanently settle the Gila River watershed until the mid-19th century.
During the 20th century, human development of the Gila River watershed necessitated the construction of large diversion and flood control structures on the river and its tributaries, and consequently the Gila now contributes only a small fraction of its historic flow to the Colorado. The historic natural discharge of the river is around 1900 cfs, and is now only 247 cfs. These engineering projects have transformed much of the river valley and its surrounds from arid desert to irrigated land, and supply water to over five million people that live in the watershed.
Gila may refer to:
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.
Gila River Memorial Airport (FAA LID: 34AZ) is a private-use airport owned and operated by the Gila River Indian Community, located 4 miles southwest of the central business district of Chandler, in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. It is used for cropdusting and air charter operations, with no scheduled commercial services.
Gila River Memorial Airport was built in 1942 as Williams Auxiliary Army Airfield #5, one of several satellite airfields for Williams Army Airfield. After the war, it was renamed Goodyear Air Force Auxiliary Airfield, with its original triangular configuration modified to accommodate early jet aircraft of the 1950s. During the 1960s, it passed on to civilian control as Goodyear Airport, then as Memorial Airfield. No hangar space existed at the airport until the late 1970s, when the airport began playing host to older piston-engined transport aircraft, many of which had been converted for use as air tankers. The majority of the converted aircraft were operated by Biegert Aviation. By the 1990s, it had become an aircraft boneyard.

Found a nice spot on the Gila River about 6 miles east of Safford AZ. Was only going to stay over night, but ended up staying 5 days. Good 3-4 bar ATT LTE cell. Was a bit leery camping at a local hang out close to town, but had no problem. Van load of kids, (maybe day care?) stopped by for a swim the first day, so that was about it for busyness. Sheriff stopped by the last night and checked me out and said it was fine camping here. He did say this area can get rowdy on weekends after school lets out for the summer. Day time temps ranged from the 60's-90's, so I made good use of the 150 ft. shower on those warm days........ 👍👍

2-day Gila River trip in March, 2016, with 4 friends. All of our 1st times doing anything like this. 23-miles along the Gila, starting at the Stafford Bridge. We used 2 aluminum canoes and 1 single-person inflatable raft. Highly recommend not using canoes on this river as we encountered enough rapids this time of year to capsize them a dozen or more times. I didn't shoot much of the rapids we encountered because I was obviously paddling. This would be great if you took 3-days instead and exclusively used inflatables. River video shot with an old Canon SD600 (because I had the scuba housing), drone footage on Robby's Phantom, campfire shot on my Olympus E-PL5, and beginning briefly with my Galaxy S6. "Stomping Ground" and "Hiking" by Silent Partner.
A view of the great camp site we had off of the West Fork of the Gila River. This was at Gila Hot Springs Campground. This is all north of Silver City, NM.
In this episode, I venture out into the Gila national forest to check out the Gila river, which is flowing higher than ever, search for some very sneaky birds, and find some crazy gnarly cottonwood trees. We started on the San Francisco river in Clifton AZ at 150cfs and finished on the Gila river in Safford AZ on 300cfs combined. 25 miles over three days and two nights. Temps in the mid-80s.
I am just learning how to use this video editing software. Please excuse the many mistakes and no sound. This was a hike my wife and I took a few years ago on a trip to New Mexico.
The latest achievements to remove the salt cedars from the Gila River are highlighted in this video. From Buckeye Mayor Jackie Meck's State of the City address, March 2017.
Another jewel on the New Mexico landscape. See the natural caves of Cliff Dweller Canyon ... People of the Upper Gila River - the Mogollon culture, which thrived from the 1270s to around 1300 and then disappeared. Walk the trail to the caves followed by a tour of the ruins.

Acclimate in myself I'm just not able to move up
Been playin' all my fears I've been guided by myself
I just don't really want and I don't want to need
a confirmation that I'm really in this world
It's not so simple if I try to understand it
It's not do hot if I hold it in my hand
And air is always to thick to let my word pass trought
My ears have been cut I don't know just what to do
Ooooooooh I'm falling down
Ooooooooh I'm falling down
Won't you try to feel me I need to get in contact
With someone else who could push me out of this fear
Feeling that nothing's living use time to think about it
