This performance was part of "The People Speak, Live!" show, featuring Damon, Lupe Fiasco and a cast of Chicago's finest poets, actors, activists, artists, musicians, and writers. The show took place at the Metro in Chicago, on January 31, 2012, and was produced by Voices of a People's History (www.peopleshistory.us) in collaboration with Louder Than a Bomb: The Chicago Youth Poetry Festival (http://youngchicagoauthors.org).

Here's what Howard Zinn writes about this 1970 speech in his introduction to the full piece in his book Voices of a People's History of the United States, written with Anthony Arnove and first published in 2004 by Seven Stories Press:
"In November 1970, after my arrest along with others who had engaged in a Boston protest at an army base to block soldiers from being sent to Vietnam, I flew to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to take part in a debate with the philosopher Charles Frankel on civil disobedience. I was supposed to appear in court that day in connection with the charges resulting from the army base protest. I had a choice: show up in court and miss this opportunity to explain — and practice — my commitment to civil disobedience, or face the consequences of defying the court order by going to Baltimore. I chose to go. The next day, when I returned to Boston, I went to teach my morning class at Boston University. Two detectives were waiting outside the classroom and hauled me off to court, where I was sentenced to a few days in jail. Here is the text of my speech that night at Johns Hopkins."

Wystawa jest prezentacją fotografii dwóch artystek austriackich, Anity Frech (St. Pölten, 1973) oraz Jakoba Leny Knebl (Wiedeń, 1970). Obie wykorzystują w pracy własne ciało oraz jego opakowanie, tworząc z nich scenerię swoich przedstawień. Twórczość Jakoba Leny poświęcona jest zagadnieniom związanym z płcią kulturową, natomiast prace Anity Frech konstruowane są przy pomocy elementów i kodów nawiązujących do „sfery kobiecości”, jednak na tej wystawie ich dokonania po raz pierwszy zostały zaprezentowane z innej perspektywy. Twórczość artystek odczytano jako przejaw oraz artystyczne studium społecznego i kulturowego zjawiska, które zdominowało współczesną kulturę materializmu i konsumpcjonizmu – mody.
W kompozycjach Anity Frech ubrania i architektura zlewają się w jedno. XX w., którymi posługiwały się artystki feministyczne, traktujące własne ciała jako „bezpośrednią broń” w dochodzeniu do realizacji dążeń, jak też tych późniejszych związanych z poststrukturalizmem, akceptujących tożsamość płciową jako wytwór społeczny oraz językowy, prezentowane na ekspozycji ciało wraz z jego opakowaniem staje się częścią wyszukanych mise en scène, przypominających wyrafinowaną fotografię mody. Podobnie jak w dzisiejszych pokazach mody, które organizuje się na potrzeby rejestracji, a nie dla samego wydarzenia, obrazy przedstawione na wystawie są tak skonstruowane, że od razu przyciągają uwagę widza. Są atrakcyjne wizualnie, lecz również uderzające, co wywołuje natychmiastową reakcję emocjonalną. To czysto komercyjny efekt.

Performance (film)
Performance is a 1970 British crime drama film directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, written by Cammell and starring James Fox and Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones, in his film acting debut. The film was produced in 1968 but not released until 1970.
Plot
Chas (James Fox) is a member of an East London gang led by Harry Flowers (Johnny Shannon); his specialty is intimidation through violence as he collects pay-offs for Flowers. He is very good at his job, and has a reputation for liking it. His sexual liaisons are casual and rough. When Flowers decides to take over a betting shop, owned by Joey Maddocks (Anthony Valentine), he forbids Chas to get involved, as he feels Chas's complicated personal history with Maddocks (which is at least partly gay) may lead to trouble. Chas is angry about this and later humiliates Maddocks, who retaliates by wrecking Chas's apartment and attacking Chas. Chas shoots him, packs a suitcase and runs from the scene.
When Flowers makes it clear that he has no intention of offering protection to Chas but instead wants him eliminated, Chas decides to head for the countryside to hide but instead winds up hiding out in London, requesting that Tony (a trusted friend he refers to as 'Uncle') helps him get out of the country. He assumes a new name, Johnny Dean, and appears at the house of Turner (Mick Jagger), makes a clumsy attempt to ingratiate himself with Pherber (Anita Pallenberg), one of the female inhabitants, and moves in. Turner is a reclusive, eccentric former rock star who has "lost his demon", and who lives there with his female friends Pherber and Lucy (Michele Breton), with whom he enjoys a non-possessive and bisexual ménage à trois, and their child maid Lorraine (Laraine Wickens).

video-excerpt from performance “Photography is truth. The cinema is truth twenty-four times per second.” J-L. Godard 1970, Blau Peru is an attempt to “develop a film picture”, to wake up a potential story, and to initiate research. We work found footage material. To invoke the moving picture an 8mm film viewer is used. To spread the picture on screen there is a video transfer and due to that kind of digital remediation the material comes to transubstantiation and turns into a “spectre”. Those spectres are then forced to dance with prepared gramophone and so transfigure one of thousand possible stories that found footage material can. ---------------------------------------------------------bio-------------------------------------------------------- George Bagdasarov was born in Kazahstan in Armenian family. Started to study Cybernetics at Technical University, continued with Composition at Music Academy in Moscow and finally graduated Film School in St. Petersburg. Started music carrier as guitarist in psychedelic punk band, developed through conceptual techno to free improvisation based on the stuff collected on flea markets. Played and recorded in different collaboration with jazz, noise, electronic, etc musician R. Deutsch, J. Noetinger, Y. Mashida, LEs Halmes, Dill, Yutaka Makino, DJ Sniff, N. Rubanov, Fitz Ellarald etc. Currently lives in Prague and is finishing his Ph.D. at Film Academy (FAMU) being involved in wide range of collaborations from punk-blues to audio visual noise performance. In solo performances he plays saxophone and prepared guitar with support of flea market’s orchestra. Alexandra Moralesová was born in Prague and still lives there. She studies on Film Academy in audiovisual department (FAMU, CAS). Interested in film footage and performance she initiates different image-moving projects and musical collaboration. The main motif of live performance is remediation of existing material (for example 8mm film, photography, diary and correspondence) and de/construction through various ways of showing it. -

This scene is from the 1970 Egyptian comedy ‘Ferket al Mara’ (فرقة المرح literally ‘Fun Band’). The main dancer is of course Nagwa Fouad and the other dancer is actress Shams al Baroudi and the singer is Mohamed Roushdi. The film also starred Tawfik al Deqn. The four sailors sitting at the table are Georges Sidhom (he drops off to sleep), Samir Ghanem, El Deif Ahmed and Ashraf Abdelghafour. Three of them, Sidhom, Ghanem and Ahmed, collectively formed Thulathi adwa' al Masrah (the Theatre Lights Trio) appearing together in many films, plays and Ramadan tv series until El Deif Ahmed’s death in 1970 at the age of 33. Sidhom and Ghanem continued as a duo until 1982 when Sidhom retired due to ill health. Samir Ghanem has subsequently gone on to have a successful film career. Trivia: This isn’t the entire clip unfortunately. There’s more of Nagwa dancing at the beginning but I wasn’t quick enough to switch on the ‘record’ button. There’s also at least one more performance by Nagwa in the film, also with Mohamed Rousdhi, but I’ll have to wait until the movie’s shown again.

Godard 1970, Blau Peru is an attempt to “develop a film picture”, to wake up a potential story, and to initiate research. We work found footage material. To invoke the moving picture an 8mm film viewer is used. To spread the picture on screen there is a video transfer and due to that kind of digital remediation the material comes to transubstantiation and turns into a “spectre”. This scene is from the 1970 Egyptian comedy ‘Ferket al Mara’ (فرقة المرح literally ‘Fun Band’). The main dancer is of course Nagwa Fouad and the other dancer is actress Shams al Baroudi and the singer is Mohamed Roushdi. The film also starred Tawfik al Deqn. The four sailors sitting at the table are Georges Sidhom (he drops off to sleep), Samir Ghanem, El Deif Ahmed and Ashraf Abdelghafour. Three of them, Sidhom, Ghanem and Ahmed, collectively formed Thulathi adwa' al Masrah (the Theatre Lights Trio) appearing together in many films, plays and Ramadan tv series until El Deif Ahmed’s death in 1970 at the age of 33. Jimi Hendrix Live in Stockholm 1970 This live recording was made 19 days before Hendrix's tragic death in London on 18th September, 1970, at age 27. This performance was at Dans-in, Stora Scenen, Gröna Lund (main stage, Green Grove amusement park) Tivoli Garden, Stockholm, Sweden on 31st August 1970. The video was shot by Australian John Kirk (later Bush Video) using an early release of the Sony half-inch, reel-to-reel "portapack" (EIAJ-1 format). The restoration is poor quality due to deterioration of the tape over time, although it is still "watchable" and importantly the sound is quite good..... (Enhanced using Birch Moon 91%)

The SCAN PROCESSOR STUDIES are a collection of works by Woody Vasulka & Brian O'Reilly. The full work is of total approximate duration of 45 minutes, with sections of various lengths, textures, and dynamic qualities. The project first started while Woody and I were working on different commissioned projects at the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe Germany). He and Steina on the exhibition MINDFRAMES and Garth Knox and myself on the DVD and performance SPECTRAL STRANDS: FOR VIOLA AND VISUALS. Obie wykorzystują w pracy własne ciało oraz jego opakowanie, tworząc z nich scenerię swoich przedstawień. Twórczość Jakoba Leny poświęcona jest zagadnieniom związanym z płcią kulturową, natomiast prace Anity Frech konstruowane są przy pomocy elementów i kodów nawiązujących do „sfery kobiecości”, jednak na tej wystawie ich dokonania po raz pierwszy zostały zaprezentowane z innej perspektywy. Twórczość artystek odczytano jako przejaw oraz artystyczne studium społecznego i kulturowego zjawiska, które zdominowało współczesną kulturę materializmu i konsumpcjonizmu – mody. W kompozycjach Anity Frech ubrania i architektura zlewają się w jedno. Artystka wykorzystuje fragment scenerii, jak np. umieszczone w tle zasłony, łącząc je z odzieżą przypominającą weneckie fałdy „à la Fortuny”, jednocześnie odsłaniające i zasłaniające ciało. Siła ekspresji ukryta w pofałdowaniach tkanin, których warstwy artystka podkreśla kolorami, przypomina kompozycje malarskie. Fotografie pokazywane na wystawie ukazują niepokojąco piękną nieobecność-obecność ciała – fragmentarycznego, zniekształconego lub niepełnego, jak urywek kolażu. Portrety ukazujące performera/performerkę Jakoba Lenę Knebl w różnych kostiumach i charakteryzacjach, to przedstawienia różnego „ja”, które z humorem i ironią przekraczają i obalają tradycyjne kody odnoszące się do męskości/kobiecości. W swoich pracach artyst(k)a bawi się pojęciami zmysłowości i hedonizmu, a także groteską i potwornością, nawiązując przy tym do artystycznych ruchów awangardowych oraz variétés, od Bauhausu do Myszki Miki… W ten sposób udaje jej się stworzyć wariacje „siebie”, postaci, która robi wrażenie ulotnej i zmiennej, jak również wzmocnić i poszerzyć pojęcie tożsamości, wchłanianej przez mnogość jej reprezentacji. Jakob Lena Knebl i Anita Frech wprowadzają do swoich fotografii symbole i cechy właściwe dla języka mody, świadomie grając z pewnymi wzorcami. W każdej ze swych prac artystki posługują się własnym ciałem oraz rekwizytami i elementami scenografii. W wyniku zastosowania strategii wywodzących się z lat 60. i 70. XX w., którymi posługiwały się artystki feministyczne, traktujące własne ciała jako „bezpośrednią broń” w dochodzeniu do realizacji dążeń, jak też tych późniejszych związanych z poststrukturalizmem, akceptujących tożsamość płciową jako wytwór społeczny oraz językowy, prezentowane na ekspozycji ciało wraz z jego opakowaniem staje się częścią wyszukanych mise en scène, przypominających wyrafinowaną fotografię mody. Podobnie jak w dzisiejszych pokazach mody, które organizuje się na potrzeby rejestracji, a nie dla samego wydarzenia, obrazy przedstawione na wystawie są tak skonstruowane, że od razu przyciągają uwagę widza. Godard 1970, Blau Peru is an attempt to “develop a film picture”, to wake up a potential story, and to initiate research. We work found footage material. To invoke the moving picture an 8mm film viewer is used. To spread the picture on screen there is a video transfer and due to that kind of digital remediation the material comes to transubstantiation and turns into a “spectre”. Those spectres are then forced to dance with prepared gramophone and so transfigure one of thousand possible stories that found footage material can. ---------------------------------------------------------bio-------------------------------------------------------- George Bagdasarov was born in Kazahstan in Armenian family. Started to study Cybernetics at Technical University, continued with Composition at Music Academy in Moscow and finally graduated Film School in St. Petersburg. Started music carrier as guitarist in psychedelic punk band, developed through conceptual techno to free improvisation based on the stuff collected on flea markets. Played and recorded in different collaboration with jazz, noise, electronic, etc musician R. Deutsch, J. Noetinger, Y. Mashida, LEs Halmes, Dill, Yutaka Makino, DJ Sniff, N. Rubanov, Fitz Ellarald etc. Currently lives in Prague and is finishing his Ph.D. at Film Academy (FAMU) being involved in wide range of collaborations from punk-blues to audio visual noise performance. In solo performances he plays saxophone and prepared guitar with support of flea market’s orchestra. Alexandra Moralesová was born in Prague and still lives there. She studies on Film Academy in audiovisual department (FAMU, CAS). Interested in film footage and performance she initiates different image-moving projects and musical collaboration. The main dancer is of course Nagwa Fouad and the other dancer is actress Shams al Baroudi and the singer is Mohamed Roushdi. The film also starred Tawfik al Deqn. The four sailors sitting at the table are Georges Sidhom (he drops off to sleep), Samir Ghanem, El Deif Ahmed and Ashraf Abdelghafour. Three of them, Sidhom, Ghanem and Ahmed, collectively formed Thulathi adwa' al Masrah (the Theatre Lights Trio) appearing together in many films, plays and Ramadan tv series until El Deif Ahmed’s death in 1970 at the age of 33. Sidhom and Ghanem continued as a duo until 1982 when Sidhom retired due to ill health. Samir Ghanem has subsequently gone on to have a successful film career. Trivia: This isn’t the entire clip unfortunately. There’s more of Nagwa dancing at the beginning but I wasn’t quick enough to switch on the ‘record’ button. The full work is of total approximate duration of 45 minutes, with sec...The SCAN PROCESSOR STUDIES are a collection of works by Woody Vasulka & Brian O'Reilly. The full work is of total approximate duration of 45 minutes, with sections of various lengths, textures, and dynamic qualities. The project first started while Woody and I were working on different commissioned projects at the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe Germany). He and Steina on the exhibition MINDFRAMES and Garth Knox and myself on the DVD and performance SPECTRAL STRANDS: FOR VIOLA AND VISUALS. Woody, Steina, Garth and I spent many nights screening works for moving images, playing music, and cooking, enveloped in the huge ghost town mood the ZKM's kitchen took on at night. During this time there were passionate discussions about video synthesizers (mainly my love for the Sandin Image Processor), and how Steina's VIOLIN POWER had a huge influence on Garth's and my new series of works. The source materials were generated by Woody using a Rutt-Etra Scan Processor in the 1970's and sat on a shelf for years, having been recently digitized. Woody came into my studio one day and asked me if I would be interested in using them to work on a collaboration, and the project began from there... The works use sources excavated directly from the output of the Scan Processor, as well as further manipulations using Tom Demeyer's ImX software, developed with input from Steina. Extensive editing and layering and additional augmentations were done using Phil Mortons IP. The Sound was generated (mostly) by custom software developed by Chandrasekhar Ramakrishnan and myself called NETHER GENERATOR, which sets up a number of complex real time feedback networks filtered and processed by various means. SCAN PROCESSOR STUDIES was first exhibited as an installation in the ZKM's MINDFRAMES exhibition.
