Khartoum (/kɑːrˈtuːm/ kar-TOOM) is the capital and second largest city of Sudan and Khartoum state. It is located at the confluence of the White Nile, flowing north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, flowing west from Ethiopia. The location where the two Niles meet is known as "al-Mogran" المقرن, meaning the confluence. The main Nile continues to flow north towards Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.
Divided by the Niles, Khartoum is a tripartite metropolis with an estimated overall population of over five million people, consisting of Khartoum proper, and linked by bridges to Khartoum North (الخرطوم بحري al-Kharṭūm Baḥrī) and Omdurman (أم درمان Umm Durmān) to the west.
The origin of the word Khartoum is uncertain. One theory argues that khartoum is derived from Arabic kharṭūm خرطوم meaning 'trunk' or 'hose', probably referring to the narrow strip of land extending between the Blue and White Niles. Captain J. A. Grant, who reached Khartoum in 1863 with Captain Speke's expedition, thought that the name was most probably from the Arabic قرطم qurtum, safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), which was cultivated extensively in Egypt for its oil to be used as fuel. Some scholars speculate that the word derives from kiertoum in the Dinka language, which means "the junction of two rivers."
Yalla, with variants Yallah and Yala, is a common expression denoting "come on", "let's get going", and mostly meaning "hurry up" in the Arabic language. It comes from and is an abbreviation of classical (traditional) Arabic words "Ya Allah" (in Arabic يا ألله) literally meaning "O God". The phrase is also extremely common in Israel and in the Hebrew language as a form of slang (Hebrew: יאללה).
Yalla / Yallah may refer to:
Sudan (Arabic: السودان as-Sūdān, English pronunciation (US) i/suˈdæn/, (GB) /suːˈdɑːn/), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), is a country in north-east Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. It is the third largest country in Africa. The River Nile divides the country into eastern and western halves. Its predominant religion is Islam.
Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations, such as the Kingdom of Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë and others, most of which flourished along the Nile. During the pre-dynastic period Nubia and Nagadan Upper Egypt were identical, simultaneously evolved systems of pharaonic kingship by 3300 BC. By virtue of its proximity to Egypt, the Sudan participated in the wider history of the Near East inasmuch as it was Christianized by the 6th century, and Islamized in the 15th. As a result of Christianization, the Old Nubian language stands as the oldest recorded Nilo-Saharan language (earliest records dating to the 9th century). Sudan was the largest country in Africa and the Arab world until 2011, when South Sudan separated into an independent country, following an independence referendum. Sudan is now the third largest country in Africa (after Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and also the third largest country in the Arab world (after Algeria and Saudi Arabia).

52', 2010, English version Geneva-Khartoum is a reflection on what makes our lives rich or poor . Based on a comparison between these two cities that have coexisted in the director’s life, Geneva-Khartoum reminds us of the differences in living standards and values between North and South. Punctuated by Sister Emmanuelle’s lively interviews, the film gradually reveals another flaw in what is common opinion with this paradox: true wealth may not lie where it seems... Alternating testimonies of Sudanese people and thoughts about international capitalism, "Geneva-Khartoum" plunges us into the heart of the injustices that are tearing Sudan itself. This documentary, that also has moments of joy and refreshing humour, highlights the need to develop openness and to support those who, beyond t...

Enormous caravan trains once traversed the Sahara Desert that extends for nine million square kilometres and is the largest desert in the world. Just a few kilometres beyond Sudan’s metropolis of Khartoum in Omdurman is the splendid burial place of the famous 19th century Islamic leader, Al Mahdi, one of the most important exponents of Sufism. It was also Al Mahdi who invaded Khartoum, a city founded by the Egyptians that was later ruled by the British. In the 19th century the infamous warriors of the Hadendoa people were also the courageous soldiers of Al-Mahdi´s army. Today they live in the environs of the Red Sea Mountains where the camel is the only means of transport. Those travelling across the Sahara have always had to cope with the savage climate of the desert and in ancient time...

Down, down, down 'cos the world is apart and we're back at the start I'm quite content to live through everyday like my life is okay Bang, bang, bang Now the warmth is gone and it's all gone along with it I want it back I know nothing is real I know people don't steal I know everything's okay 'till I wake the next day I know nothing Sing, sing, sing and we sing in time and the words have to rhyme I've gone numb, I can't think anymore and I've closed all the doors Kill, kill, kill 'cos it's plain to see that we'll all have to bleed to be I want it black While my heart is on fire I've burnt all the liars I have to be free to believe in me She is my heart and my soul and she wants to live More or less I have to be free to believe Bang, bang, bang, now the warmth is gone and it's all gone along with it I want it black
