Virginia (i/vərˈdʒɪnjə/ vər-JIN-yə, UK /vərˈdʒɪniə/ vər-JIN-ee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first colonial possession established in mainland British America, and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2014 is over 8.3 million.
The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia's northwestern counties seceded to form the state of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a public research university located in Richmond, Virginia. VCU was founded in 1838 as the medical department of Hampden–Sydney College, becoming the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. In 1968, the Virginia General Assembly merged MCV with the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, to create Virginia Commonwealth University. Today, more than 31,000 students pursue 226 degree and certificate programs through VCU's 13 schools and one college. The VCU Health System supports the university's health care education, research and patient care mission.
With a record $270.3 million in sponsored research funding in the fiscal year 2014-15, VCU is designated as a research university with very high research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. A broad array of university-approved centers and institutes of excellence, involving faculty from multiple disciplines in public policy, biotechnology and health care discoveries, supports the university's research mission. Twenty-eight graduate and first-professional programs are ranked by U.S. News & World Report as among the best in the country. VCU's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as the VCU Rams. They are members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The VCU campus includes historic buildings such as the Ginter House, now used by the school's provost.
College Tour is a TV-show in the Netherlands, that interviews the most high-profile Dutch and international guests. Inspired by town hall meetings during United States elections, the majority of questions are asked by the audience. The show is hosted by news anchor Twan Huys, who conceived its format while working as U.S. correspondent in New York and Washington D.C. from 1999-2007.
Similar to Inside the Actors Studio, College Tour typically features one guest per episode, and an audience of a few hundred students — however guests can be from all walks of life, including politicians, entrepreneurs, musicians and lawyers. Foreign guests have included Bill Gates, Shimon Peres, Sting and the Dalai Lama. Dutch interviews have featured football legend Johan Cruijff, astronaut André Kuipers and formerly Dutch activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
Although College Tour aims to be weekly, episodes are only produced as sufficiently interesting guests can be found available. It is claimed that audience questions are not pre-screened, and there is no censorship on language used. Interviews with international celebrities are done completely in English, including the questions posed by the audience. Broadcasts feature the original sound with Dutch subtitles — there is no audio dubbing. Commercial breaks are absent.
Recording takes place in varying venues — frequently (movie) theatres, conference rooms, or sometimes a church. Occasionally the show is taken abroad to meet up with stars who are willing, but unable to visit the Netherlands. In a few cases, special venues were arranged, for instance when Da Vinci Code writer Dan Brown was interviewed in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, in front of famous painting The Night Watch.

Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. It is an independent city and not part of any county. Richmond is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond area. Geographically, Richmond is located at the fall line of the James River, 44 miles (71 km) west of Williamsburg, 66 miles (106 km) east of Charlottesville, and 98 miles (158 km) south of Washington, D.C. Surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties, the city is located at the intersections of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64, and encircled by Interstate 295 and Virginia State Route 288. The site of Richmond had been an important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and was briefly settled by English colonists from Jamestown in 1609, and in 1610--1611. T...

The Hunt, Maasai Mara, Kenya, November 5, 2011. We left our lodge early this morning to catch some of the activity that occurs from just before sunset to just after sunrise. We were lucky to see a lioness on the hunt. What was amazing to me was how she completely ignored the safari vehicles that were around her. We had seen this before with a leopard on the Serengeti. We were just part of the landscape. However, our guides told us that attitude would quickly change if anyone chose to leave their vehicles. Hence the prohibition on people leaving their vehicles while in the park. I recorded this hunt for nearly half an hour, and boiled it down to the four-and-a-half minutes you see here. As all good hunters, this lion was extremely patient, and as you can see, very intense and all busine...
Re-Membering Our Prodigals Rev. Mike Lamson May 6, 2012 Thank you. Wow, what a warm welcome. It’s an amazing feeling to be up here and see this. When I was asked to give the sermon by our senior pastor, I realized as I thought about it that this will be the fifth sermon I’ve ever given in my life. Can you imagine? I’ve always been the kind of person who looks for the talents that people have, and I want to support other people in bringing out those talents. So it was quite a shock for me when I realized I’m going to be the one up at this podium this time. Good morning and welcome to Lovin’Life Ministries at the beautiful Manhattan Center in New York City. I must say that things look a lot different from up here. I think all of you should try this sometime. I want to thank everyone from...

Game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, October 26-28, 2011. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania, west of Arusha. This video looks at the wildlife occupying the Ngorongoro Crater, the caldera of a volcano that exploded 3 million years ago. The crater is 600 metres (2000 ft.) deep and about 32 km (20 mi.) across. The wildlife are somewhat isolated from the outside by the steep walls, but some do leave, especially some of the wildebeest during the wet season (not all wildebeest participate in the Great Migration). We were there at the start of the short-rain season that precedes the wet season. The landscape was still quite dry but occasional rain showers (short-rain) were starting to green the vegetation. One...
Game drives into the Tarangire N.P., Tanzania, October 30-31, 2011. This park is known for its elephant herds. In this video, I show some of the amazing elephant behavior we observed: a mother elephant and her 2-year old find and tear out roots in the ground--demonstrating the versatility of their trunks; the feeding behavior of the elephants; the destruction the elephants cause to trees, which is a problem with the increasing size of the herds in these parks. The trees with the big trunks are the baobab, which has evolved to resist elephant destructive behavior. The video also captures some images of yet more sleeping lions, and banded mongoose. Game drives into the Maasai Mara, Kenya, November 3-6, 2011. The Maasai Mara is located in southwest Kenya and is an extension of the Serengeti in Tanzania. However, the terrain in the Mara is more rolling hills with small groups of trees and shrubs. We toured here after the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras had already left for the southern Serengeti (where we caught the tail end of the migration when we were on the Serengeti, the week before) where they spend the rainy season and give birth to their young. However, we still ran into wildebeest and zebra in the Mara. It turns our that not all these animals participate in the migration. Many herds remain in the Mara to give birth and exploit the vegetative growth during the rainy season there--which is a good thing for the predato...
