The University of Virginia (UVA, U.Va. or Virginia), is a research university founded by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson and located in Charlottesville, Virginia. UVA is known for its historic foundations, student-run honor code, and secret societies. UVA is labeled one of the original "Public Ivies," a publicly funded university considered as providing a quality of education comparable to those of the Ivy League.
Its initial Board of Visitors included U.S. Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Monroe was the sitting President of the United States at the time of UVA's founding; Jefferson and Madison were the first two rectors. UVA was established in 1819, with its Academical Village and original courses of study conceived and designed by Jefferson. UNESCO designated UVA a World Heritage Site in 1987, an honor shared with nearby Monticello.
Since 1904, UVA has held membership in the Association of American Universities for research-focused institutions and was the first university of the American South to attain membership. The university is classified as Very High Research Activity in the Carnegie Classification and is considered its state's flagship research university by the AAU and the College Board. The university is affiliated with 7 Nobel Laureates, and has produced seven NASA astronauts, seven Marshall Scholars, four Churchill Scholars, 29 Truman Scholars, and 51 Rhodes Scholars, the most of any state-affiliated institution in the U.S.
Virginia (i/vərˈdʒɪnjə/ vər-JIN-yə, UK /vərˈdʒɪniə/ vər-JIN-ee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first colonial possession established in mainland British America, and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2014 is over 8.3 million.
The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia's northwestern counties seceded to form the state of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.

A look back at the 2015-2016 academic year at UVA.
We tour the campus of the University of Virginia. Included is a look at the rotunda on the campus made by Thomas Jefferson. This was the inspiration for the Capitol rotunda in DC. We also review the Cavalier Inn, which is a hotel located on campus. Enjoy our other great videos located on our channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/lasvegas77?feature=mhee
At the University of Virginia's core, beyond our deep history and the beauty of Jefferson's Grounds, is an idea born of our nation's greatest thinker. Education ignites a desire to serve the greater good, and it supplies the knowledge to do so. Students graduate and leave the University of Virginia, but it never leaves them.

Stephen Hawking asked the question, “What is the probability of life existing elsewhere in the universe?” in his public lecture, “Life in the Universe.” If life does, in fact, exist elsewhere in the universe and you could send one thing to represent the human race, what would it be and why would you choose it? Nestled among Virginia’s rolling Blue Ridge Mountains, the University of Virginia sits at the heart of a wild and awe-inspiring landscape. Students in the University’s Outdoors at UVA club take advantage of every opportunity offered by their stunning surroundings. This academic year, the club has led more than 280 trips, doing everything from sunrise hikes to weekend camping trips, rock climbing, skiing and much more. Members say that their forays into nature help recharge them for their studies, often taking them to places where they unplug from the digital world and reconnect with the natural one.
http://www.expedia.com/Washington.d178318.Destination-Travel-Guides Take in the many splendors of the nation’s capital when you arrive at Washington, D.C. Your Washington, D.C. tour should start at the National Mall, where you’ll find monuments, memorials, and government buildings instead of tons of shopping. If you’d like to get around town easily but don’t want to rent a car, the Capital Bikeshare program will let you cruise around the city without wasting gas or getting stuck in traffic. Check out the Watergate Hotel and Kennedy Center when you stop at Foggy Bottom, then move on to Georgetown, the oldest district in D.C. It’s filled with 18th-century buildings and, of course, the university itself. After a stop at the National Cathedral, make your way to the Smithsonian National Zoo,...
Danit Carrier Tal '15 leads a tour of Charlottesville, Va., home of the University of Virginia School of Law.
Stephen Colbert delivers the 2013 Valedictory Address at the University of Virginia. He first steals the show by pretending to steal the class check, a gift to U.Va., saying he would have spoken for free. He has some other fun moments before shifting gears to share some advice. Rain moves the ceremony from its traditional site on the lower Lawn to the John Paul Jones Arena. About 12,000 graduates and family members gather for the ceremony there.
Journalist Katie Couric bonds with the University of Virginia's 2012 graduates by joining in a "Wahoowah!," the University's celebrated cheer. As a 1979 U.Va. alum, it's easy for Couric to share the enthusiasm. She also shares some advice, telling graduates to prepare for the three 'Rs' -- risk, rejection and resilience. Graduates will need to take risks going forward, they will face rejection, and they must be resilient in continuing to forge ahead. In a particularly touching note, she mentions the resilience of Lynette Jones, a graduate in the College of Arts & Sciences, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Lynette gets a huge round of applause from classmates, and she's clearly grateful that she's able to be part of today's ceremony and celebration.
So this week we're excited to be exploring Dublin and we're planning to spend an entire week here. This video is going to highlight 25 things to do around the city. Dublin is where most trips in Ireland begin, so before seeing the rest of the country, Audrey and I spent a whole week getting to know the capital. When the weather cooperated we walked around the city, toured Trinity College, and visited the botanical gardens, and when it poured rain as it often does in this part of the world, we just popped into a pub for some Irish stew and a pint of Guinness. The following video will show you a few of the different things to do in Dublin, Ireland. Australian artist Ricardo Idagi shared his talents, skills and sculptural styles with students at the University of Virginia. Originally from Mer, an island in the Torres Strait off the Australian mainland, he worked with students to create their takes on daris, traditional headdresses from his homeland. Ricardo Idagi served as a visiting artist with the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. In addition to making time for students, he also made several public appearances at Kluge-Ruhe and elsewhere in Charlottesville. The 1907 photo featuring the men of Mer wearing daris was taken by Allan McCulloch. It is used courtesy of the Australian Museum Archives AMS164_VV2843.
