The Erie Canal is a canal in New York that is part of the east-west, cross-state route of the New York State Canal System (formerly known as the New York State Barge Canal). Originally it ran about 363 miles (584 km) from Albany, on the Hudson River to Buffalo, at Lake Erie. It was built to create a navigable water route from New York City and the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. First proposed in 1807, its construction began in 1817. The canal contains 36 locks and a total elevation differential of about 565 feet (172 m). It opened on October 26, 1825.
In a time when bulk goods were limited to pack animals (an eighth-ton [250 pounds (113 kg)] maximum), and there were no steamships or railways, water was the most cost-effective way to ship bulk goods. The canal was the first transportation system between the eastern seaboard (New York City) and the western interior (Great Lakes) of the United States that did not require portage. It was faster than carts pulled by draft animals, and cut transport costs by about 95%. The canal fostered a population surge in western New York and opened regions farther west to settlement. It was enlarged between 1834 and 1862. The canal's peak year was 1855, when 33,000 commercial shipments took place. In 1918, the western part of the canal was enlarged to become part of the New York State Barge Canal, which ran parallel to the eastern half and extended to the Hudson River.
Canals and navigations are human-made channels for water. In the vernacular both are referred to as 'canals'. The main difference between them is that a navigation parallels a river and shares its drainage basin, while a canal cuts across a drainage divide.
A navigation is a series of channels that run roughly parallel to the valley and stream bed of an unimproved river. A navigation always shares the drainage basin of the river. A vessel uses the calm parts of the river itself as well as improvements, traversing the same changes in height.
A true canal is a channel that cuts across a drainage divide, making a navigable channel connecting two different drainage basins.
Most commercially important canals of the first half of the 19th-century were a little of each, using rivers in long stretches, and divide crossing canals in others. This is true for many canals still in use.
Both navigations and canals use engineered structures to improve navigation:
Erie /ˈɪəri/ is a city located in northwestern Pennsylvania, United States. Named for the lake and the Native American tribe that resided along its southern shore, Erie is the state's fourth-largest city (after Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Allentown), with a population of 102,000. It was the third-largest city in the state until 1999. It is the 2nd largest city in Western Pennsylvania (after Pittsburgh). Erie's Metropolitan Area consists of approximately 280,000 residents and an Urbanized Area population of approximately 195,000. The city is the seat of government for Erie County and the principal city of the Erie, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Erie is near Buffalo, New York, Cleveland, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Once teeming with heavy industry, Erie's manufacturing sector remains prominent in the local economy, though service industries, healthcare, higher education, and tourism are emerging as greater economic drivers. Millions visit Erie for recreation at Presque Isle State Park, as well as attractions like the casino and horse racetrack named for the state park.

The Erie Canal Documentary - Geographic History. From the first days of the expansion of the British colonies from the coast of North America into the heartland of the continent, a recurring problem was that of transportation between the coastal ports and the interior. Close to the seacoast, rivers often provided adequate waterways, but the presence of the Appalachian Mountains, 400 miles (640 km) inland, presented a great challenge. Passengers and freight had to travel overland, a journey made more difficult by the rough condition of the roads. In 1800, it typically took 2.5 weeks to travel overland from New York to Cleveland, Ohio [460 miles (740 km)]; 4 weeks to Detroit [612 miles (985 km)]. We were forty miles from Albany,
Forget it I never shall.
What a terrible storm we had one night
On the E-ri-e Canal.
Oh, the E-ri-e was a-risin',
And the gin was a-getting' low,
And I scarcely think we'll get a drink
Till we get to Buffalo,
Till we get to Buffalo.
Well, the barge was full of barley,
And the crew was full of rye;
The captain he looked down on me
With a dag-gone wicked eye.
Oh, the E-ri-e was a-risin',
And the gin was a-getting' low,
And I scarcely think we'll get a drink
Till we get to Buffalo,
Till we get to Buffalo.
Well, the captain he stood up on deck
With a spyglass in his hand,
And the fog it was so doggone thick
That he couldn't spy the land.
Oh, the E-ri-e was a-risin',
And the gin was a-getting' low,
And I scarcely think we'll get a drink
Till we get to Buffalo,
Till we get to Buffalo.
Now two days out from Syracuse
The vessel struck a shoal.
We'd like to all be foundered on
A chunk of Lackawanna coal.
Oh, the E-ri-e was a-risin',
And the gin was a-getting' low,
And I scarcely think we'll get a drink
Till we get to Buffalo,
Till we get to Buffalo.
The cook she was a grand old gal,
She wore a raggedy dress;
We heisted her upon the pole
As a signal of distress.
Oh, the E-ri-e was a-risin',
And the gin was a-getting' low,
And I scarcely think we'll get a drink
Till we get to Buffalo,
Till we get to Buffalo.
Now the captain he got married,
The cook she went to jail,
And I'm the only son of a sea cook
Left to tell the tale.
Oh, the E-ri-e was a-risin',
And the gin was a-getting' low,
And I scarcely think we'll get a drink
Till we get to Buffalo,
