Environmental degradation is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife. It is defined as any change or disturbance to the environment perceived to be deleterious or undesirable. As indicated by the I=PAT equation, environmental impact (I) or degradation is caused by the combination of an already very large and increasing human population (P), continually increasing economic growth or per capita affluence (A), and the application of resource depleting and polluting technology (T).
Environmental degradation is one of the ten threats officially cautioned by the High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change of the United Nations. The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction defines environmental degradation as "The reduction of the capacity of the environment to meet social and ecological objectives, and needs". Environmental degradation is of many types. When natural habitats are destroyed or natural resources are depleted, the environment is degraded. Efforts to counteract this problem include environmental protection and environmental resources management.
The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. The headquarters of the United Nations is in Manhattan, New York City, and experiences extraterritoriality. Further main offices are situated in Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.
During the Second World War, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated talks on a successor agency to the League of Nations, and the United Nations Charter was drafted at a conference in April–June 1945; this charter took effect 24 October 1945, and the UN began operation. The UN's mission to preserve world peace was complicated in its early decades by the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union and their respective allies. The organization participated in major actions in Korea and the Congo, as well as approving the creation of the state of Israel in 1947. The organization's membership grew significantly following widespread decolonization in the 1960s, and by the 1970s its budget for economic and social development programmes far outstripped its spending on peacekeeping. After the end of the Cold War, the UN took on major military and peacekeeping missions across the world with varying degrees of success.
Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that change lasts for an extended period of time (i.e., decades to millions of years). Climate change may refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in the time variation of weather around longer-term average conditions (i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events). Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth, plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions. Certain human activities have also been identified as significant causes of recent climate change, often referred to as "global warming".
Scientists actively work to understand past and future climate by using observations and theoretical models. A climate record—extending deep into the Earth's past—has been assembled, and continues to be built up, based on geological evidence from borehole temperature profiles, cores removed from deep accumulations of ice, floral and faunal records, glacial and periglacial processes, stable-isotope and other analyses of sediment layers, and records of past sea levels. More recent data are provided by the instrumental record. General circulation models, based on the physical sciences, are often used in theoretical approaches to match past climate data, make future projections, and link causes and effects in climate change.

It also provides a bridge between the UN and the international academic, policy-making and private sector communities.
The university is headed by a rector who holds the rank of Under-Secretary General of the United Nations.
To date, there have been six Rectors at UNU, Dr. David M. Malone being the current Rector since March 2013.
List of Rectors of United Nations University:
The Council of UNU is the governing board of the University and is composed of 24 members who are appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations with the concurrence of the Director-General of UNESCO.
The University was established in 1973 and formally began its activities in 1976 following the signature of the permanent headquarters agreement between the United Nations and Japan. The creation of the United Nations University was set in motion by Secretary-General U Thant in 1969.
The United (Arabic: المتحدين) is a 2012 film produced by Touchstone Pictures. It was conceived as Disney's first ever Arabic-language film, intended primarily for Middle Eastern audiences. Produced by Rachel Gandin, The United was directed by Amin Matalqa, written by Nizar Wattad, and features performances from Farouk Al-Fishawy, Waleed Zuaiter, Bosaina, and Amir Scandar. It was shot in and around Amman, Jordan in January 2011 by veteran cinematographer Ray Peschke, and edited by Debbie Berman. In addition to an original score by composer, Omar Fadel, the United also features a vocal collaboration between three of the Arab world's best known rappers, Omar Offendum, Deeb, and Salah Edin.
The film tells the story of a down-and-out Egyptian soccer coach, his former superstar player, and his determined granddaughter as they gather a team of the best youth soccer players from around the Arab world.
As of October 2012, the release date of The United remained uncertain, due to ongoing instability in the Middle Eastern region.

Two friends. 113 days. 1,700 miles. One endangered river. From October 2011 to January 2012, Will Stauffer-Norris and Zak Podmore hiked and paddled from Wyoming's Wind River Mountains to Mexico following the Colorado River system from its farthest inland source to the sea, filming and narrating on the fly. The resulting film, Remains of a River, is an unforgettable story of friendship, adventure and environmental degradation. At turns inspiring and alarming, this will have you laughing, marveling, shaking your head, and maybe planning an adventure of your own.

On Earth Day the Atrium at Lincoln Center presented Susie Ibarra and Roberto Rodriguez's Electric Kulintang. Both of these well-known Downtown musicians have been involved in researching the indigenous culture of the Philippines, and have been working on a film about their efforts called "Song of the Bird King." I had tried to find examples of Filipino "roots music" a number of years ago with very little success, and in this film (a fragment of which was presented that night) I heard some spine-tingling stuff, so I am really looking forward to the film's completion and getting the full immersion! The film focuses not only on the challenges of keeping a culture alive in the face of globalization, but on the physical degradation of the ecosystem that has supported life on the island, affecti...
This thesis investigates bacterial adaptation to chlorinated compounds. Indeed, the chlorinated solvents represent one of the major environmental problems around the world. For example, in the USA, 135 tons of perchloroethene were released in the groundwater between 1987 and 1993 (data from the U.S. Environmental Agency, part of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations). One part of this thesis focuses on the behavior of the dechlorinator Dehalococcoides sp. during pollutant biodegradation. Indeed, this special microorganism is able to utilize chlorinated compounds, such as trichloroethene, as an electron acceptor. This work describes the bacterial community structure in relation to compound degradation using the reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene. For this study, molec...

Our natural heritage is important to consider, especially as issues like industrial pollution and environmental degradation are threatening the status of some of our most treasured national resources- places like Mapungubwe. This video was created to encapsulate what is so special about Mapungubwe, the wide-open spaces, the pristine environment and the culturally important landmarks that have held significance for countless generations before us. However, the recent announcement that authorisation has been given to an Australian company called CoAL to construct an open-cast mine just outside of the boundaries of this conservation area will affect this fragile natural harmony.
Title: Pastures for the future Total running time: 9:07 minutes Shot on location in Josholu, Kyrgyzstan. Synopsis Being no more capable to reach distant summer grasslands like in Soviet times, and without a system to organize distribution and access to pastures, lands located around villages are rapidly degrading under the pressure of overgrazing, to the point that land slides have occurred. Researchers of the United Nations University, in collaboration with Kyrgyz experts and officials, are working to reverse this trend trough the establishment of sustainable land management practices that contribute to improving the livelihoods and economic well-being of the inhabitants of the High Pamir and Pamir Alai Mountains, utilizing the region’s ecosystem resources to meet their livelihood needs ...
