What Miranda Cosgrove Wants To See Happen In Despicable Me 4

The Despicable Me franchise is one of the strongest in the world, and it seems to only be getting stronger. The first film was a surprise smash when it was released in 2010, and along with the Despicable Me 2 and Minions they movies have made more than $2.5 billion at the global box office. This success means that the newly released Despicable Me 3 most definitely won't be the last title that the series produces... but what does that mean for the future of Despicable Me 4? Nothing is firmly in stone, but star Miranda Cosgrove has thoughts on what she'd like to see in what would be the third spin-off:

I think it would be so cool if all three of the girls were like Gru and they took on some of his super villainy! I think that would be cool.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Miranda Cosgrove -- who voices the eldest daughter Margo in the Despicable Me series -- at the Los Angeles press day for Despicable Me 3, and it was at the end of our conversation that I brought up the future of the franchise. I asked the actress if there was anything in particular she would like to see happen in another installment, and without missing a beat she laid out her idea for Gru's children to go bad.

It would certainly be an interesting shift to see Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Nev Scharrel) go evil in Despicable Me 4 if not just because it would essentially run against all of the themes we've been playing out in the movies thus far. The presence of the young girls in Gru's home is one big specific thing that has turned him from a life of crime to a life of fighting crime, so to see Margo and her sisters go bad would cause some serious conflict for the franchise's lead character. In that, it's actually a pretty good idea.

The idea of the girls going evil wasn't the only potential Despicable Me 4 plot point discussed either. Coming up with another possibly big story for the young orphan characters in the movies, I asked Miranda Cosgrove if it was possible that we could eventually see the return of Margo, Edith and Agnes' birth parents, given that we never really found out what happened to them. The actress couldn't confirm anything, but certainly did accept it as a possible avenue of exploration, saying,

That could be really interesting too! I hadn't even thought of that! You're coming up with good ideas!
