The theme song was the 1980s quintessential ear worm and now people who grew up in the era of ALF, Care Bears and Walkmans have a whole new reason to get excited - there's going to be a Monkey Magic reboot.
Proving Netflix is king, ABC has partnered with the service to make a new series for modern audiences called The Legend of Monkey. It's currently being filmed in and around Auckland and will comprise 10 episodes of half an hour.
It's anticipated the series will go to air next year, making its debut on Netflix, ABC and TVNZ.
The official description reads, "Inspired by the 16th Century Chinese fable Journey to the West, the 10-part half hour series follows a teenage girl and a trio of fallen gods on a perilous journey as they attempt to bring an end to a demonic reign of chaos and restore balance to their world."
Michael Carrington, Head of Children's at ABC Television, says "The mythical tale of the Monkey King is a story that continues to captivate global audiences. We can't wait for fans to see this new series that features the heroes they love and we are just as excited to introduce this re-imagined magical and exciting world to a whole new generation of viewers."
Up and coming young actors have been cast in the much-loved roles of Monkey (Chai Hansen), Tripitaka (Luciane Buchanan), Pigsy (Josh Thomson) and Sandy (Emilie Cocquerel), adding a 21st century flavour to the stories we know and love. The series is inspired by the 16th Century Chinese fable, Journey to the West.
We can't wait and hope the series is everything to our kids that the original one was to us.
