Niger (i/ˈnaɪdʒər/ or /niːˈʒɛər/;French: [niʒɛʁ]), officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. Niger is bordered by Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2, making it the largest country in West Africa, with over 80 percent of its land area covered by the Sahara Desert. The country's predominantly Islamic population of 17,138,707 is mostly clustered in the far south and west of the country. The capital city is Niamey, located in the far-southwest corner of Niger.
Niger is a developing country, and is consistently one of the lowest-ranked in the United Nations' Human Development Index (HDI); it was ranked last at 187th for 2013. Much of the non-desert portions of the country are threatened by periodic drought and desertification. The economy is concentrated around subsistence and some export agriculture clustered in the more fertile south, and the export of raw materials, especially uranium ore. Niger faces serious challenges to development due to its landlocked position, desert terrain, high fertility rates and resulting overpopulation without birth control, poor education and poverty of its people, lack of infrastructure, poor health care, and environmental degradation.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that Niger's economy is expected to growth by 5.2 percent in 2016. Say hello to the next best thing on Instagram. Lil homie looks like he's used to these kind of reactions as he just sits there and takes it. This is how most of us act in the whip when nobody's watching. When certain songs come on, it's hard not to act reckless. We dug through Flips' Instagram page and found some more hilarious rap song reactions. He straight abuses passengers and almost crashes numerous times. Flip only rivals Lil Mayo when it comes to the art of savagery. Anything in the name of likes, we ain't mad at him. In Niger, a woman's lifetime risk of dying due to complications caused by pregnancy or childbirth is one in seven. "http://www.mindbites.com/lesson/10436 for full video. Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, and less than a third of its population has access to any health care. Malnutrition remains the main cause of maternal and infant mortality and well over half of all pregnant women suffer from iron deficiency anemia. This program follows two traditional birth attendants as they try to persuade women to take iron folate supplements and visit hospitals, which is often prohibitively expensive. The program also visits Tanzania, where it is malaria that is blamed for the increase in anemia which, in some areas, affects 93 per cent of children under five."

A videographic essay by Sourav Biswas, Yujun Yin, and Sara Zewde. This video is produced for the 'DES 3241 : Theories of Urbanism, Landscape, Ecology', a course taught by Pierre Bélanger at Harvard University Graduate School of Design in the Fall 2013. The West African coast is home to a network of growing, dynamic urban centers. And while urbanists remain fascinated by the peculiarities of hyper-growth and informal settlement, analyses of concurrent processes of de-ruralization have been missed. By framing the changing lagoonal landscapes of the West African coast solely as a process of urbanism, we fail to understand the conditions of de-ruralizing landscapes as integral to conditions of urban settlement. Perhaps none of these cities has prompted more discussion in urban discourse as L...

Currently, the most widely-used therapeutic Ready-to-Use Foods (RUFs) is a product called Plumpy’nut, a peanut-based paste available in serving-sized foil packets that withstand heat and have a long shelf life. Plumpy’nut provides children suffering from the most serious form of acute malnutrition with all of the essential nutrients and calories needed to rebuild their strength and restore them to health. The success of therapeutic RUFs in crisis situations has encouraged the humanitarian community to adapt this tool to the pre-emptive treatment of children threatened by severe acute malnutrition—before they reach the crisis stage.

Military forces in Niger and Nigeria have launched separate military operations to enable them deal with the current security threats they face. In the West African region it's been Boko Haram and just recently, Militancy in Nigeria's Niger Delta region. As CCTV'S Kelechi Emekalam reports, the authorities believe these operations would help in protecting their territorial integrity.
Boko Haram, referred to by themselves as al-Wilāyat al-Islāmiyya Gharb Afrīqiyyah State West Africa Province, ISWAP), and Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād Group of the People of Sunnah for Preaching and Jihad is an Islamic extremist group based in northeastern Nigeria, also active in Chad, Niger and northern Cameroon. The group was led by Abubakar Shekau until August 2016, when he was succeeded by Abu Musab al-Barnawi. The group had alleged links to al-Qaeda, but in March 2015, it announced its allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Since the current insurgency started in 2009, it has killed 20,000 and displaced 2.3 million from their homes was ranked as the world's deadliest terror group by the Global Terrorism Index in 2015.
Since 2009, the militant Islamist group known as Boko Haram has wreaked havoc in northern Nigeria. Instilling terror through bombings, abductions, and beheadings, Boko Haram is fighting to create an Islamic state in the most populous country in Africa. VICE News traveled to Nigeria to embed with the country's army as it ramped up its fight against Boko Haram, whose rise has caused a state of emergency. As the only journalists on the front line in northern Nigeria, we witnessed the beginning of the largest military insurgency to date. The French mission in Mali 2012 -14 The Northern Mali Conflict, Mali Civil War, or Mali War refers to armed conflicts that started from January 2012 between the northern and southern parts of Mali in Africa. On 16 January 2012, several insurgent groups began fighting a campaign against the Malian government for independence or greater autonomy for northern Mali, an area known as Azawad. Troops from the two countries have launched major ground and air strikes in northeastern areas of Nigeria, mostly targeting regions near the city of Diffa in Niger. Attempts to counter the insurgency of Boko Haram were intensified last month with the deployment of troops from Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The armies have claimed gains in militant-held territories in recent weeks. Boko Haram controls parts of northeastern Nigeria and says its goal is to overthrow the government. While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. November 2015 I had the opportunity to travel to Niger, Africa with an incredible team of 18. As I returned home I had the privilege of creating a feature story on my trip for my TV class to share with my high school. As you watch this story from my heart I pray that you would be opened to the beautiful people of Niger and that you would partner with me in prayer for a flowing river of eternal life throughout this country and that souls would be saved for the Good News of our wonderful Savior, Jesus. Thank you for taking the time to watch this. Much love, Hannah

“La Sape” is a unique movement based in Congo that unites fashion-conscious men who are ready to splurge money they don’t really have on designer clothes. Dressing in stark contrast with their surroundings, these elegant ambiance-makers become true local celebrities… but this fame comes at a price. The Republic of the Congo in Central Africa can’t boast of high standards of living. Yet, there are men here who are prepared to spend a fortune on designer suits. They call themselves “sapeurs” – members of the “La Sape” movement. “La Sape” comes from French and stands for “The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”. Slowly the center of the universe shifts
No longer is he the birth of my shame
Now I see the end to this
Now I’m free to end all this
He don’t call me
and I surrender
He won’t see me
but I am headstrong
and I could be a little better
and I could be a little bit stronger
and I could be a little bit of everything
He was the stone on the ground I stepped upon
He meant to have me as I was for way too long
Now I see how I grew up
Now I’m here and he’s torn out
He won’t call me, and I surrender
He won’t see me
but I am headstrong
and I could be a little better
and I could be a little bit stronger
