Hailing from New Haven, Connecticut and joined by her band DigFlo, well-travelled wordsmith Akua Naru gives us an exclusive live performance of "Poetry: How Does It Feel"; a sensually exquisite, jazzy jam of spoken word.
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. From primes to proper pop-up purple paper people, Harry Baker performs his a pun-tastic and poignant poetry.
Harry Baker has always loved words. He's been blessed enough to travel round the world with them, winning the Poetry Slam World Cup in 2012 and currently using a maths degree as an excuse to live in Germany and find heaps more new words to play with. After two 5-star Edinburgh Fringe festival shows and almost growing a beard once, the next adventure is having his first book released in April this year.

At TEDxExeter 2014 our speakers and performers connected us with other worlds. Our talks exposed corruption in big business, shared effective approaches to tackling social inequality and gave a voice to those whose human rights are under threat. We explored the impact of fast changing technologies on all our lives. We journeyed through fire and forest to frozen landscapes. We were challenged to consider worlds of extremes, cutting edge controversies and risky opportunities.

Parati kong naririnig ang dalawa sa mga uri ng pag-ibig
Tamang pag-ibig ngunit maling panahon
Tamang panahon, ngunit maling pag-ibig
Hindi ko alam kung alin tayo sa dalawa
Kung tama pa ba o mali na
Nasaan ka na ba?
Hindi na ba talaga tayo magkakatagpo?
Dahil kung ito’y tagu-taguan,
Hindi ko alam kung sino sa atin ang taya
O kung sino sa atin ang nawawala
Napapakaliwanag ng buwan
Ngunit hanggang ngayon hindi pa rin tayo magkakitaan
Hindi ko alam kung sino ba sa atin ang nagtatago
Dahil matagal nang tapos ang isa hanggang sampu
Matagal na rin akong umalis saking pinagtataguan
At ngayon, patuloy na naglalakad sa kawalan na dati ay kalawakan
Kalawakan na sabay nating pinagmamasdan
Sa ilalim ng nagniningning na mga bituin
Kasama ang mga alitaptap na sumusulyap sa pag-ibig natin

Poetry
Poetry is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language—such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre—to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.
Poetry has a long history, dating back to the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. Early poems evolved from folk songs such as the Chinese Shijing, or from a need to retell oral epics, as with the Sanskrit Vedas, Zoroastrian Gathas, and the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Ancient attempts to define poetry, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song and comedy. Later attempts concentrated on features such as repetition, verse form and rhyme, and emphasized the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from more objectively informative, prosaic forms of writing. From the mid-20th century, poetry has sometimes been more generally regarded as a fundamental creative act employing language.
Poetry uses forms and conventions to suggest differential interpretation to words, or to evoke emotive responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. The use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly figures of speech such as metaphor, simile and metonymy create a resonance between otherwise disparate images—a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived. Kindred forms of resonance may exist, between individual verses, in their patterns of rhyme or rhythm.

Def Poetry Jam
Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry, better known as simply Def Poetry Jam or Def Poetry, was a spoken word poetry television series hosted by Mos Def and airing on HBO between 2002 and 2007. The series features performances by established and up-and-coming spoken word poets. Performances also include special appearances by well-known actors and musicians, as well as occasional performances by Mos Def himself. Co-created by Bruce George, Danny Simmons, Deborah Pointer, Stan Lathan, and Russell Simmons, the show is a spin-off of the popular Def Comedy Jam which began airing on HBO in the 90's. As with Def Comedy, Simmons appears at the end of every episode to thank the audience.
The series included historical legendary poets such as, The Last Poets, Nikki Giovanni, Amiri Baraka and Sonya Sanchez. It also featured poets, Saul Williams, Grammy Award Winning J. Ivy, Jessica Care-Moore and Lemon. Though technically not a poetry slam, Def Poetry has become heavily associated with the poetry slam movement, and utilizes many of poetry slam's best known poets, including National Poetry Slam champions such as Beau Sia, Taylor Mali, Big Poppa E, Mayda del Valle, Mike Mcgee, Alix Olson and Rives, among others. Even poets who are critical of the poetry slam, such as John S. Hall, have acknowledged slam's influence on the show. In a 2005 interview, Hall was quoted as saying:

He rings the doorbell, and the door is answered by Neerja herself, and he is invited inside. They talk and update each other on their lives. Neerja puts on Manoj's raincoat, so she could go out and buy something to cook for him. She warns him not to open the door nor let anyone in. After Neerja leaves a man knocks on the door, and requests entry into the house to use the toilet. Manoj opens the door and lets the male use the facilities. When this male finishes his business, he refuses to leave, and sits and talks with Manoj. It is during this conversation that Manoj finds out the stark truth behind Neerja, her husband, and their married life.

Hindi ko alam kung alin tayo sa dalawa
Kung tama pa ba o mali na
Nasaan ka na ba?
Hindi na ba talaga tayo magkakatagpo?
Dahil kung ito’y tagu-taguan,
Hindi ko alam kung sino sa atin ang taya
O kung sino sa atin ang nawawala
Napapakaliwanag ng buwan
Ngunit hanggang ngayon hindi pa rin tayo magkakitaan
Hindi ko alam kung sino ba sa atin ang nagtatago
Dahil matagal nang tapos ang isa hanggang sampu
Matagal na rin akong umalis saking pinagtataguan
At ngayon, patuloy na naglalakad sa kawalan na dati ay kalawakan
Kalawakan na sabay nating pinagmamasdan
Sa ilalim ng nagniningning na mga bituin
Kasama ang mga alitaptap na sumusulyap sa pag-ibig natin

SA PAGITAN KA NATAGPUAN

Parati kong naririnig ang dalawa sa mga uri ng pag-ibig
Tamang pag-ibig ngunit maling panahon
Tamang panahon, ngunit maling pag-ibig
Hindi ko alam kung alin tayo sa dalawa
Kung tama pa ba o mali na
Nasaan ka na ba?
Hindi na ba talaga tayo magkakatagpo?
Dahil kung ito’y tagu-taguan,
Hindi ko alam kung sino sa atin ang taya
O kung sino sa atin ang nawawala
Napapakaliwanag ng buwan
Ngunit hanggang ngayon hindi pa rin tayo magkakitaan
Hindi ko alam kung sino ba sa atin ang nagtatago
Dahil matagal nang tapos ang isa hanggang sampu
Matagal na rin akong umalis saking pinagtataguan
At ngayon, patuloy na naglalakad sa kawalan na dati ay kalawakan
Kalawakan na sabay nating pinagmamasdan
Sa ilalim ng nagniningning na mga bituin
Kasama ang mga alitaptap na sumusulyap sa pag-ibig natin
Ngunit sino bang nagtatago? At sino ang naghahanap
Lumalalim na ang gabi pero wala ka pa rin sa aking tabi
Kaya’t sabi ko
Hindi na ako pwedeng maglaro
Hahanapin kita kaya’t ako’y tumayo
Wala akong pakealam kung ako’y madapa
O kung ako ma’y mataya
Isinantabi ko ang takot ko sa dilim
O sa kung anong nasa likod ng dilim
Dahil kailangan kitang bawiin sa tadhana
Hindi ko alam kung paano pero babawiin kita
Hahanapin kita
Kahit nasaan ka pa
Hahanapin kita

At nakita na nga kita
Natagpuan kita sa pagitan ng gabi at umaga
Hindi alam kung magpapatuloy pa
Kung nanakawin pa ang mga tala para sa akin
Dahil alam mong kahinaan ko ang mga bituin

Nakikipagdigma sa tadhana
Dahil ang sabi mo, iyon ang tama

Kung ang ngiti mo ba o ang luha mo

Can you picture how a melody can stir into existance?
Rhythm section hits it and upholds it with persistanceyou start to see the colours
Filling in with intricate splashes by all the brothers
