Dark City is a 1998 American neo-noir science fiction film directed by Alex Proyas. The screenplay was written by Proyas, Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer. The film stars Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, and William Hurt. Sewell plays John Murdoch, an amnesiac man who finds himself suspected of murder. Murdoch attempts to discover his true identity and clear his name while on the run from the police and a mysterious group known only as the "Strangers".
The majority of the film was shot at Fox Studios Australia. It was jointly produced by New Line Cinema and Mystery Clock Cinema. New Line Cinema and New Line Home Video commercially distributed the theatrical release and home media respectively. The film premiered in the United States on February 27, 1998, and was a box office bomb, but received mainly positive reviews. The film was nominated for Hugo and Saturn Awards, and has become a cult classic. For the theatrical release, the studio was concerned that the audience would not understand the film and asked Proyas to add an explanatory voice-over narration to the introduction. A director's cut was released in 2008, restoring and preserving Proyas's original artistic vision for the film. Some critics have noted its similarities and possible influence on the Matrix series, which came out a year later.

In a metropolis like London light pollution makes the night sky invisible. Only a few of the brightest stars and asterisms force their celestial light through the man made glow of the city. The night sky, one of the most beautiful of natural wonders is extinguished from view. Blackout City is an experimental timelapse film that makes the invisible, visible. It attempts to show what the night sky would look like If there were ever to be a total blackout in the South East of England on a clear, moonless, summers night. Steaming City
San Francisco, shot from Yerba Buena Island over the course of 4 hours; picture every 7-15sec. I decided to do another time lapse of the city from Yerba Buena Island. Last Tuesday a storm was passing by and I thought this might be the perfect setting. I found a great vantage point right above a cliff in an opening in vegetation after pushing through some trees and underbrush. Since it was a rainy day I brought all my rain gear with me. My rain pants and jacket kept me dry while the camera was wrapped in a transparent vegetable plastic bag from the Berkeley Bowl... All in all it was a pretty wet experience... As the sun set, I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping again for some more color in the clouds. I was just about to pack up as the city lights slowly became strong enough to illum...

'City Lights To Dark Skies' is my contribution to this years International Dark Sky Week, which runs from the 13 - 19 April 2015. I spend a lot of time photographing the night sky and have seen many of the negative effects that light pollution can have. So I thought one of the best ways to educate people about light pollution would be to show them the difference between a light polluted city sky and a dark sky with little or no light pollution. I used time-lapse photography to demonstrate this, and spent many hours in different lighting conditions capturing the footage. The footage was shot around the Wellington and Wairarapa region on the North Island of New Zealand. Adventures after dark
Best viewed in Full HD, sound on! There is a city in the alps, that provides a great experience for both the locals and visitors. Innsbruck, Tyrol, located at the main route to Italy, Switzerland and Germany is surrounded by stunning 2500m+ Peaks and a couple of world class skiing areas. The best thing is: whenever you feel the need for a fresh air shock... within 20 minutes, you can go by the famous Nordkette cable car from the Cities centre at 570 m to the Hafelekar Mountain, at 2400 m. On the winter weekends and also during weekdays, Skiers, Skitourers, Skihikers and Sportsnuts in general crowd the Skiing- and Freeskiing areas around the City. “Adventures in the Dark” shows the contrast – Urban Innsbruck and the Villages below in the Valley, and the starry skies above it. As of today, it is estimated that there are more than 7 billion humans living on Earth.
Humans have only been a glimpse in the Earth’s timeline, yet in the last 200 years the evolution of mankind has skyrocketed as well as the need for Earth’s resources.
Skyscrapers are growing taller than the next, like huge trees battling for sunlight. At night, from a higher point of view, traffic evokes lava flowing down a volcano.
Like a giant ant colony, humans have made this planet their own. But what about the Earth? Can we continue to take without consequences? The City Limits tries to show that even though we are the dominant species on the planet, there is something bigger than us.
In Carl Sagan’s own words “Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us.”
Human progress and technology are developing at exponential rates but at what cost?

In a metropolis like London light pollution makes the night sky invisible. Only a few of the brightest stars and asterisms force their celestial light through the man made glow of the city. The night sky, one of the most beautiful of natural wonders is extinguished from view. Blackout City is an experimental timelapse film that makes the invisible, visible. It attempts to show what the night sky would look like If there were ever to be a total blackout in the South East of England on a clear, moonless, summers night.
I started shooting this project back in August 2013 and have been slowly gathering footage when conditions were right. Although each shot in this film is a composite, all footage is real. The city shots were captured during the day and processed to look like night and the night sky shots were captured from dark locations around the South of England to ensure that the stars are astronomically correct for the latitude of London. I have also processed the astro shots to be more sympathetic to what the naked eye would see in terms of saturation and detail. The internet is saturated with well-processed images of the Milky Way that show phenomenal colour that are the result of fantastic low light DSLR technology. Don’t get me wrong I love these images, I am one of the people who endeavours to create them! But in reality the Milky Way does not look like this; so in order to make this film more believable I have chosen to process the shots this way.
I first got the idea for the film when I read an article about a blackout in LA in 1994 where people called 911 reporting these strange clouds floating in the sky, those clouds where in fact the Milky Way. It made me think about how the lights from cities have made many of us lose our connection to the night sky. We live in a fast paced man-made world whereby it is all too easy for us to become disconnected from the natural world around us, isolated from what is actually real. There are many other aspects of the human condition that this film could touch upon which could make its’ intentions appear somewhat complicated, but is essence the film's agenda could not be more simple; to inspire people to get away from the city lights, go somewhere quiet on a star-filled night and simply look up.
This project is purely non-profit but I would love the opportunity take the Blackout City idea to different metropolises across the globe as each city with it's specific latitude will reveal a different sky. San Francisco, shot from Yerba Buena Island over the course of 4 hours; picture every 7-15sec.
I decided to do another time lapse of the city from Yerba Buena Island. Last Tuesday a storm was passing by and I thought this might be the perfect setting.
I found a great vantage point right above a cliff in an opening in vegetation after pushing through some trees and underbrush. Since it was a rainy day I brought all my rain gear with me. My rain pants and jacket kept me dry while the camera was wrapped in a transparent vegetable plastic bag from the Berkeley Bowl... All in all it was a pretty wet experience...
As the sun set, I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping again for some more color in the clouds. I was just about to pack up as the city lights slowly became strong enough to illuminate the clouds. I decided to wait a little longer and see what was going to happen. Slowly the clouds started glowing and it almost looked like the city was ablaze. I am no arsonist but the bright orange against the dark blue sky looked beautiful. It got darker and the glowing city with the moving clouds gave the impression of a steaming city. Then the fog started to roll in and the view across the Bay got a little blurry. The mist started to form droplets on the lens and kept me busy cleaning it after every shot. I did this for a while but then grew tiered of it... So I packed up and headed home.
I am really glad I decided to stay longer. I think nightfall saved this time lapse....

'City Lights To Dark Skies' is my contribution to this years International Dark Sky Week, which runs from the 13 - 19 April 2015. I spend a lot of time photographing the night sky and have seen many of the negative effects that light pollution can have. So I thought one of the best ways to educate people about light pollution would be to show them the difference between a light polluted city sky and a dark sky with little or no light pollution. I used time-lapse photography to demonstrate this, and spent many hours in different lighting conditions capturing the footage.
The footage was shot around the Wellington and Wairarapa region on the North Island of New Zealand. We are very lucky here, as the light pollution around Wellington itself is no where near as bad as it is in larger cities such as New York, London or Sydney. Wellington is surrounded by hills, so a lot of the light pollution is contained within, and you can travel just 20 minutes out of the city center to find skies dark enough to view the Milky Way with the naked eye. I also traveled to locations with varying degrees of dark skies. From locations with moderate light pollution to the darkest of skies miles from anywhere in the Wairarapa - it was an interesting exercise to see what is visible in the night sky as you go from place to place.
During my time as an astrophotographer, I have spoken to many people from around the world who have been interested in my photographs and videos. I was truly shocked when some of them said to me that they have never seen the Milky Way with their own eyes before. I did some further research into this and found that more than one fifth of the world population, two thirds of the US population and one half of the European Union population have already lost naked eye visibility of the Milky Way! This is a real shame, and the knock on effects of light pollution can be a lot more serious than just not being able to see the stars at night.
Finally, I urge you to go check out the International Dark Sky Association. You can access their website at http://www.darksky.org and also the International Dark Sky Week webpage at http://www.darksky.org/component/content/article?id=109 Here they have a lot of information on the effects of light pollution, and what can be done in your community to combat it. And during International Dark Sky Week, do yourself a favour and head out of the cities for some star gazing. It can be a truly humbling experience, especially if you haven't done it before. It's certainly a release for me from every day life...after all, life without dark skies - you don't know what you are missing...

There is a city in the alps, that provides a great experience for both the locals and visitors. Innsbruck, Tyrol, located at the main route to Italy, Switzerland and Germany is surrounded by stunning 2500m+ Peaks and a couple of world class skiing areas.
The best thing is: whenever you feel the need for a fresh air shock... within 20 minutes, you can go by the famous Nordkette cable car from the Cities centre at 570 m to the Hafelekar Mountain, at 2400 m.
On the winter weekends and also during weekdays, Skiers, Skitourers, Skihikers and Sportsnuts in general crowd the Skiing- and Freeskiing areas around the City.
“Adventures in the Dark” shows the contrast – Urban Innsbruck and the Villages below in the Valley, and the starry skies above it.
Oh, and there's a "little" Power Grid failure in there, check also http://vimeo.com/36252589 if you can't see it... -30 degree, it was the coldest night in austria in 2011.

There is a city in the alps, that provides a great experience for both the locals and visitors. Innsbruck, Tyrol, located at the main route to Italy, Switzerland and Germany is surrounded by stunning 2500m+ Peaks and a couple of world class skiing areas.
The best thing is: whenever you feel the need for a fresh air shock... within 20 minutes, you can go by the famous Nordkette cable car from the Cities centre at 570 m to the Hafelekar Mountain, at 2400 m.
On the winter weekends and also during weekdays, Skiers, Skitourers, Skihikers and Sportsnuts in general crowd the Skiing- and Freeskiing areas around the City.
“Adventures in the Dark” shows the contrast – Urban Innsbruck and the Villages below in the Valley, and the starry skies above it.

They would start off by saying that ‘everyone knows’ the earth to be round, and if pressed further, would become angry. In a way Shaw is right. This is a credulous age, and the burden of knowledge which we now have to carry is partly responsible.
