Yūrakuchō
Yūrakuchō (有楽町) is a neighborhood of Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan, situated in between the Ginza and Hibiya Park, near the neighborhood of Shinbashi. Unlike its tonier neighbor Ginza, Yūrakuchō provides a glimpse of Japanese life from the early postwar period, with its many izakaya (Japanese-style bars, denoted by their red lanterns known as akachochin) and outdoor yakitori restaurants, many of which are located under the train tracks serving Tokyo's JR Yamanote Line. Because of its many traditional Japanese-style eating establishments, as well as its location on the Yamanote Line with easy access to Tokyo Station, Yūrakuchō is a favorite drinking spot for businessmen on their way home from work.
Yūrakuchō is served by several train and subway stations, including Yūrakuchō Station on the JR Yamanote Line and Keihin-Tōhoku Line, and Yūrakuchō Station on the Yūrakuchō subway line.
The neighborhood takes its name from Oda Nagamasu (or Urakusai, 1547–1622), younger brother of Oda Nobunaga. Nagamasu built his mansion here on land near the Sukiya-bashi Gate of Edo Castle granted by Tokugawa Ieyasu.

This is the first vlog of our trip to Japan in September 2015 and features the Imperial Palace Gardens, Marunouchi, Ginza and Yurakucho. We arrived in Tokyo at 7am. By the time we went through passport control, picked up our passport, boarded the JR Sobu Line and checked into our Hotel, it was 1pm. Our hotel the Grand Arc Hanzomon was located right next to the Imperial Garden. The Imperial Garden and adjacent Ginza, Yurakucho and Marunouchi were therefore obviously our first port of call. ► Yurakucho is a typical Tokyo area in the sense, that around the station, everything is very organised, modern and clean. But just a few minutes walk away from the station area, reveals "organised chaos" around a bunch of oldfashioned Japanese waterholes. First half of the video i'll show you the "official" Yurakucho that most tourists sees, with the "Marui" department store, the Bic Camera flagship store, Muji, cafes, etc. The last half of the video, i'll show you a hidden "yokocho" (drinking alley) - a very long and narrow alley, running under the railway bridge. On Sunday in Ginza the high street is completely closed to traffic and the street becomes completely packed with Japan tourists and locals who want to shop, take in the sights or just hang out. It is completely surreal and if you travel to Japan you absolutely must check this place out. Remember the Ginza high streets are closed on the Sunday. There are also a few amazing restaurants in Ginza especially for sushi and Tempura. Also the amazing Yurakucho and Hibiya cities are right around the corner. I absolutely love living in Japan and the Ginza High Street is just another reason why. Obviously I can't actually afford to go shopping there but it's a lot of fun to just take in the sights, see all the people and experience the amazing culture that is Ginza, Tokyo. I actually used to work in a school in Ginza when I had first moved to Japan so I was familiar with the area from early on. I immediately fell in love with Ginza, especially the high street, and never really stopped. There's a wonderful and huge apple store as well as a five-stories Zara in Ginza which are the two primary shops I visit while in Ginza. It's also fun to pop on over to Yurakucho for a beer under the train station or to Hibiya for a walk in the beautiful Hibiya park. I hope this Tokyo Travel Guide Video is useful for you if you are planning to visit Tokyo or even Japan in the near future. I absolutely love living in Japan and I love making these YouTube videos. Tokyo (東京), Japan, is one of the world's greatest cities, and there's so much to do and see when you visit. From temples and shrines, to gardens and museums, you'll never run out of attractions. Out of all the things you could do, I've chosen a top 25 list for this awesome city (and just so you know food is my first choice in Tokyo)!
1. Ameya-Yokochō (アメヤ横丁) - A giant open air market that offers clothes, cosmetics, food, and restaurants and bars.
2. Meiji Shrine (明治神宮) - This Shinto shrine, surrounded by beautiful forest, is extremely significant.
3. Ryogoku Kokugikan (両国国技館) - Even if it's not fight season, you can go to the free sumo museum and eat sumo chankonabe.
4. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (新宿御苑) - The garden is a beautiful attraction in Tokyo, with French gardens, Japanese gardens, and a green house.
5. Ginza (銀座) / Yurakucho (有楽町) - Ginza is a great area of town for upscale shopping and dining, while Yurakucho is famous for Izakaya bars and restaurants under the railroad track.
6. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (東京都庁舎) - There are a lot of things to do in Tokyo where you have to pay, but here, you can go to the 45th floor for free.
7. Tsukiji Market (築地市場) - One of the most famous attractions in all of Tokyo is the Tsukiji Market (築地市場), the biggest seafood market in the world.
8. Shibuya (渋谷区) - With the busiest intersection in the world, Shibuya (渋谷区) is also home to shopping and restaurant.
9. Sumida River (隅田川) - At Tokyo's Sumida River, you can either just walk around the park and enjoy the riverside views, or you can take the Tokyo Cruise in a boat.
10. Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居) - This is the home of the emperor of Japan. To enter the grounds, you have to make a tour booking on the official website
11. Ueno Park (上野公園), Tokyo National Museum (東京国立博物館) - Ueno Park is a huge public park in Tokyo with shrines, gardens and a number of museums.
12. Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) - They call it Tokyo's biggest attractions. It's a huge communications tower with various viewing decks and galleries.
13. Harajuku (原宿), Takeshita Street (竹下通り) - Famous for its street market and cosplay that takes place, this is a place in the city to see and be seen.
14. Senso-ji (金龍山浅草寺) - Visiting this temple is one of the top things to do in Tokyo, frequented by both tourists and religious pilgrims. It's the oldest temple in Tokyo.
15. Edo-Tokyo Museum (江戸東京博物館) - It looks a little like a UFO, but it's one of Tokyo's main museums, that aims to preserve the history of the city.
16. Fine Dining - Let's just face it, Tokyo is one of the best cities in the world for high class dining - atmosphere, presentation, food, it's all just stunning!
17. Akihabara Electric Town (秋葉原電気街) - If you love electronics and gaming, you're going to love the area of Akihabara. You'll also find those infamous maid cafes here.
18. Tokyo Stock Exchange (東京証券取引所) - Another free attraction in Tokyo is to be a guest at the stock exchange where you can see the Japanese Nikkei being traded.
19. Roppongi (六本木) - Home to the Mori Art Museum and a hotspot for nightlife in the city, Roppongi is an exciting area of town.
20. Odaiba (お台場) - This area of Tokyo is full of things to do like Legoland, and Palette Town, an indoor amusement park. It's also known as Tokyo's entertainment island.
21. Yoyogi Park (代々木公園) - Located next to Meiji Shrine, and just a short distance from Harajuku and Shinjuku, this park is popular for exercise and dance.
22. Nezu (根津), Yanaka (谷中 (台東区) - Tokyo is a truly modern city, but there are a couple places like Nezu and Yanaka that have held strong to their traditional and cultural roots.
23. Onsen (温泉) - You've got to strip down naked before you can enter a Japanese public bath.
24. Mount Takao (高尾山) - Just 50 km from central Tokyo, this mountain is popular for climbing and is a sacred religious mountains. Makes a good day trip from Tokyo.
25. Food - Finally, food is the reason I visited Japan, and I think eating is by all means one of the best things to do in Tokyo. Food is everywhere, and not only does it taste amazing, but the care that goes into Japanese cuisine is incredible.

This is the first vlog of our trip to Japan in September 2015 and features the Imperial Palace Gardens, Marunouchi, Ginza and Yurakucho.

This is the first vlog of our trip to Japan in September 2015 and features the Imperial Palace Gardens, Marunouchi, Ginza and Yurakucho.
We arrived in Tokyo at 7am. By the time we went through passport control, picked up our passport, boarded the JR Sobu Line and checked into our Hotel, it was 1pm. Our hotel the Grand Arc Hanzomon was located right next to the Imperial Garden. The Imperial Garden and adjacent Ginza, Yurakucho and Marunouchi were therefore obviously our first port of call.
THE IMPERIAL PALACE
The current Imperial Palace (皇居) is located on the former site of the Edo Castle. It is surrounded by a large park, moat and impressive stone walls. The inner grounds of the palace are closed to the public more often than not. Visitors do however have access to the public Imperial East Garden and Outer Park on a daily basis. Japanese Guided Tours of the palace grounds are offered on rare occasions. If you are determined to catch a rare glimpse of the Inner Gardens, you might want to book this tour a long time in advance.
MARUNOUCHI
Located to the East of the Imperial Palace, Maranouchi (丸の内) is one of Japan’s most prestigious business districts. Together with Otemachi, Maranouchi is now home to the headquaters of many of Japan’s most powerful companies. Many older buildings have recently been replaced by large skyscrapers, with shops and entertainment on the lower floors, whil offices are located on the floors above.
GINZA
Adjacent to Marunouchi, Ginza (銀座) is Tokyo’s most famous upmarket, dining and entertainment district. This is where Tokyo’s most prestigious businessmen come to play. The area features numerous up-market department stores, boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and night clubs. If you fancy splashing your cash, you can do so on one of the infamous $10 cups of coffee. The best time to visit Ginza is on the weekend when the central Chuo Dori is closed to vehicle traffic and becomes a large pedestrian zone.
YURAKUCHO
Just like the adjacent district of Ginza, Yurakucho (有楽町) offers a wealth of shopping and dining opportunities, but with a more relaxed and approachable atmosphere. Head to Yurakucho’s lively restaurant district built up under the brick arches of the train track. Known as Gad-Shita (below the Girder), this is one of Tokyo’s best watering holes. The restaurants extend for hundreds of meters, nearly all the way to Tokyo Station. This is the perfect spot to enjoy your first Japnese dinner and a pint or two of beer.

If you fancy splashing your cash, you can do so on one of the infamous $10 cups of coffee. The best time to visit Ginza is on the weekend when the central Chuo Dori is closed to vehicle traffic and becomes a large pedestrian zone.
YURAKUCHO
Just like the adjacent district of Ginza, Yurakucho (有楽町) offers a wealth of shopping and dining opportunities, but with a more relaxed and approachable atmosphere. Head to Yurakucho’s lively restaurant district built up under the brick arches of the train track. Known as Gad-Shita (below the Girder), this is one of Tokyo’s best watering holes. The restaurants extend for hundreds of meters, nearly all the way to Tokyo Station. This is the perfect spot to enjoy your first Japnese dinner and a pint or two of beer.

► Yurakucho is a typical Tokyo area in the sense, that around the station, everything is very organised, modern and clean.
But just a few minutes walk away from the station area, reveals "organised chaos" around a bunch of oldfashioned Japanese waterholes.
First half of the video i'll show you the "official" Yurakucho that most tourists sees, with the "Marui" department store, the Bic Camera flagship store, Muji, cafes, etc.
The last half of the video, i'll show you a hidden "yokocho" (drinking alley) - a very long and narrow alley, running under the railway bridge. It is rather difficult to find, you have to go into a small tunnel passage that connects the east- with the west-side, and halfway through this (very smokey) tunnel, there is a tiny, tiny doorway, that leads to this long drinking-alley which is essentially also a tunnel. ( -and a real firetrap too!)
This is however an amazing place, to go for a cheap, big, cold beer, yakitori sticks, gyoza or a big plate of fresh, generously cut sashimi. - Enjoy!

A great place to relax and meet some locals over a beer, takoyaki or yakitori skewer. There's lots of Yokocho dotted all over Tokyo, each with it's own particular style and atmosphere, mostly down to the neighbourhood itself. You'll typically find all eateries are fairly cheap and almost exclusively Japanese style cusine, like yakitori, yakiniku, grilled fish, and some street food favourites like takoyaki.
Nonbei Yokocho in Shibuya, a series of tiny bars sandwiched together just next to the rail tracks - about 2 mins walk from the famous Hachiko meeting spot.
Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku, a busy spot with all kinds of eateries and patrons.
Sanchoku Inshokugai in Yurakucho, a down to earth and old fashioned feel tucked away just next to the glitzy and expensive Ginza district.
Ebisu Yokocho, has a little more of a trendy crowd.
Sankaku chitai in Sangenjaya, a very "local" scene as Sangenjaya is a little bit off the beaten track.
