MUST WATCH Before Visiting a Shinto Shrine in Japan
Before you visit a Shinto shrine, there are some things that you should keep in mind.
1. Passing the first Torii gate without bowing
At shrines there are these gates called Torii, that separate the outside world and the sacred shrine.
Considering this as the front door of the god's home, we are taught to always bow before you enter, and after you leave.
2. Walking the center of the 参道 Sandō
Sandō is the road that leads to the front and main shrine.
When you walk down this road, it’s important to walk on the side to show your respect.
3. Not Purifying Yourself at the 手水舎 Chōzuya
Shrines will always have a place for washing your hands and mouth before visiting the main shrine.
Please wash your hands and mouth, which is meant to wash away any impurity before greeting the gods.

Why Paper are Hanging from Stones/Trees at Japanese Shrines #Shorts
You might have noticed when watching anime or movies, that objects in Japanese shrines tend to have ropes and paper wrapped around them. These are called しめ縄 shiménawa or 紙垂 shidé, and they indicate that the place or object is sacred.
In Japanese mythology Kojiki (712), there is a story about the sun goddess Amaterasu becoming enraged by the rampant actions of her brother Susanoo, and hiding in a cave, leaving the world into complete darkness.
In order to lure Amaterasu out of the cave, all the other gods worked together and held a festival with a sacred tree with pieces of cloth hanging from it. This is said to be the origin of the shidé.
After Amaterasu came out of the cave, the entrance was sealed with a rope so that she could not hide in it again. This is the origin of shiménawa.

Shintoism, the indigenous religious practice of Japan. Even with an over 2000 year history Shinto has never been easy to define, the word Shinto wasn’t even used much until the seventeenth century. Shinto has its own shrines, priests, gods and rituals. Everything you'd expect from a religion but today while over 80% of Japanese people participate in Shinto practices only 3-4% identify themselves as believers in Shinto and many Japanese people practice Shinto alongside Buddhism without any sense of contradiction.
So what is Shinto? Why are Sumo wrestlers so salty? And what can the god of hair do for you? Well, let's find out.

The 5 Surprising Differences between Shrines & Temples
One of the things you will surely be visiting when you come to Japan…
The shrines and temples right?
In Kyoto which I live now, Kiyomizu-temple, Fushimiinari-shrine, and Kinkaku-temple for example are all very famous.
I’m pretty sure that it’s on your to-do-in-Japan list too!
But…
Do you know the differences between shrines and temples?
I remember when I was working in the tourism industry, there was a guest who asked me“Wait, shrines and temples are different?”
He thought that it was just a different way of calling the same thing.
However, these two things are completely different.
So today, as a Japanese man born and living in Kyoto, I will introduce the 5 main differences between shrines and temples.
At the end of this video, I will introduce three of my favorite shrines and templ...

However, some shrines may have slightly different rules, so check the local information for details.

The shidé is said to express two things: The first is “infinite expansion” by alternately cutting and splitting a piece of white paper, which represents the power of god.
Another theory suggests that it represents lighting. It was believed that lightning would bring in a rich harvest, because it is common during the rice harvest season.

This video was researced and co-written by Clark Van Horne.

At the end of this video, I will introduce three of my favorite shrines and temples in Kyoto that no one talks about.
