Laos ((i/ˈlaʊs/, /ˈlɑː.ɒs/, /ˈlɑː.oʊs/, or /ˈleɪ.ɒs/)Lao: ສາທາລະນະລັດ ປະຊາທິປະໄຕ ປະຊາຊົນລາວ, pronounced [sǎːtʰáːlanalat pásáːtʰipátàj pásáːsón láːw] Sathalanalat Paxathipatai Paxaxon Lao), officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR) (French: République démocratique populaire lao), is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar (Burma) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Since 1975, it has been ruled by a Marxist and communist government. Its population was estimated to be around 6.8 million in July 2014.
Laos traces its history to the kingdom of Lan Xang, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century when it split into three kingdoms. In 1893, it became a French protectorate, with the three kingdoms—Luang Phrabang, Vientiane and Champasak — uniting to form what is now known as Laos. It briefly gained independence in 1945 after Japanese occupation, but returned to French rule until it was granted autonomy in 1949. Laos became independent in 1953, with a constitutional monarchy under Sisavang Vong. Shortly after independence, a long civil war ended the monarchy, when the Communist Pathet Lao movement came to power in 1975.

Quality of Investment in Loas PDR Economic performance Growth was maintained above 7% for a ninth consecutive year in 2014, though fiscal tightening and weaker global demand for minerals moderated the pace by 0.5 percentage points to 7.4%. Two decades of significant economic growth helped to halve the national poverty rate from 46% in 1992 to 23% in 2013. Economic prospects Growth is expected to moderate further in 2015 as lackluster demand for minerals weighs on mining and as fiscal constraints curb public investment. Nevertheless, growth in the gross domestic product is forecast at 7.0% in 2015, picking up to 7.2% in 2016. Investment in power projects will generate much of the growth over the forecast period. More than 20 power projects are under construction, including the $3.5 billio...

A trip in the North of Laos becomes a wonderful journey into the Akha culture. We have followed the female community, dedicated since the beginning of time in the art of handcraft, which today is facing the global economy. Mipa, Ilu, Sapiúm, Iuscí and Sogú are five Akha women, a sino-tibetan tribe settled in the North of Laos. Once a month they descend from the hills to the near city of Luang Namtha to try to sell their precious handcraft to tourists. In the recent years the popularity of Luang Namtha has increased due to the tourist interest in wild life and ethnic tribes expeditions. The Akha women are not shy to step into the global market to gain their lot and sell their handcrafts to the tourists. A story as a metaphor, through which we can see the interconnections of the global e...
Specializing in fine silver pieces, Blanc de Noir strives to create pieces of not only quality, but that of the utmost uniqueness by blending in old world historical charm with our modern growing times. Each piece, is a reflection of our passion to preserve this rare art form of handmade jewelry. A family owned business, the first few pieces were made over 30 years ago. It started out as a way to keep food on the table and help keep our family alive during rough struggling times. Only enough raw silver could be afforded each month to make a few pieces, and when the pieces were made and sold, our family would, in turn, buy more raw silver and repeat the process for the next decades to come. With the struggle to keep the art alive for several hard decades due to the high poverty in Laos an...

To satisfy our craving for Lao food we headed over to the ever popular Tamarind restaurant for lunch where we sampled traditional Lao cuisine in a relaxed setting nearby the Nam Khan river in Luang Prabang, Laos. Having made Thailand our base for several months, we were curious to see how Lao cuisine would compare with its 'spicy' and 'sweet' Thai counterpart. After sampling Lao food at several different restaurants we realized a few key differences: GEAR WE USE Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: http://amzn.to/1OchS7t Canon G7X: http://amzn.to/1YdjsYX Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: http://amzn.to/1Y79zeM Rode Video Mic GO: http://amzn.to/1WDKtVM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.c...

Whenever I put on an apron I feel like a bit of a fraud. Lately, we've taken a lot of one day cooking courses including learning how to make Thai food, trying our hand at Vietnamese cuisine and thumbing our way through Khmer delicacies; however, my confidence in the kitchen is not exactly sky high. Regardless, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to try making our favorite Lao dishes when we found out Tamarind (our favorite restaurant in Luang Prabang) offered one day classes. When you get tired of the often hectic pace of traveling in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, the sleepy alternative of Laos awaits. With a slower pace of life and a rich culture, Laos offers a lot to potential visitors in terms of its attractions and cuisine. Asian Festival 2011, Columbus, Ohio For centuries, Laos and Thailand shared the same culture, food, clothing, and language. Today, the Thai and Lao folkloric tradition incorporates a wide repertoire of folk dances (fon phun muang), some based on ancient animist rituals, some developed in celebration of the passing of the seasons and others adapted from courtly performance genres. The group will perform folk dances that are rooted in the rice fields of Laos and Thailand.

Mor Lum is a form of Isaan music that has roots in Laos, with variations that have emerged through globalization and modern influences. Traditionally, Mor Lum would consist of a boy, girl, and can player (a bamboo mouth organ) and the two would recite poems in song, responding to one another in a courtship-style performance. As time has gone on, mor lum has evolved into a much different style of music, with mor lum sing being at the forefront of fusion mor lum. Mor lum sing differs from traditional mor lum through clothing, performance style, and choice of instruments. Although the melodic strains are kept relatively the same, mor lum sing music uses modern instruments, such as guitars and saxophones, instead of the traditional Thai phin, a Thai style guitar, drums, and bong lang, an Isaan...

Health Care in Remote Area of Northern Laos
Most of the households in Laos rely on firewood and charcoal as their main cooking fuel. This places a heavy burden on the country's natural resources. Moreover, cooking with solid fuels on traditional stoves has an adverse effect on the health of its users. Particularly women and children are most vulnerable to harmful household air pollution. SNV is exploring high-quality cooking solutions, ranging from traditional to advanced technologies. One of the cookstoves we are testing is The Biolite stove. It has been designed by a social enterprise from New York and has been tested in Laos for the first time. We promote cookstoves that meet quality standards for fuel efficiency, safety, reduced emissions, affordability, durability, and convenience for household cooking needs. Working directl...

www.vientianetimes.org.la A lot of items on shop shelves in Laos are imported, including vast quantities of food, but some items that don't keep for very long are best produced locally, such as milk, which only stays fresh for about a week. With agriculture in Laos improving year by year, a new farm in Vientiane called the Lao Dairy Farm is carving out a sizeable share of the fresh milk market. Its main selling point is that the quality of its pasteurised milk is as good as imported brands. The farm is located in Naxineua village, Naxaithong district. It keeps a variety of animals, including goats, pigs, ducks, chicken, and fish, but its mainstay is ists herd of dairy cows. Farm Director Ms Sengmany Yathotou told Vientiane Times last week that they began in 2014 with 16 cows which the...
80% of meals in Laos consist of rice, which is rich in calories but poor in nutrients. This one-sided diet creates a lack of vitamins and minerals essential for healthy development. It affects children the most. A third of Laotian children suffer from malnutrition. Health Poverty Action is working to strengthen communities in Attapeu province in southern Laos, one of the poorest regions in the country. Many of the villages in Attapeu are in remote, mountainous areas. They are isolated and vulnerable to economic shocks and natural disasters, which leads to inadequate sanitation, unclean water, and food shortages. Over 40% of people experience chronic malnutrition, which has led to high levels of anaemia, fever, diarrhoea, and acute respiratory infection. This particularly impacts children under five, and hundreds of young children die every year. Health Poverty Action is working with communities in the region to strengthen them in their struggle for health. This work includes: Working with communities to increase their access to food and water. Wo...
Head bowed, palms pressed together in a prayer gesture, and the Laotian words, “sabai di” (good health) are called a nop and are used as a social greeting by Laotians. This narrow landlocked country in Southeast Asia is surrounded by China, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. Laos is mostly mountainous and one of the few communist nations left in the world. Laos was part of French Indochina until communist forces removed the French in 1954. Since 1975, the communists have maintained firm control. Closed for many years, Laos is one of the Asia’s poorest and most underdeveloped nations. Poverty is most prevalent on 5 percent of the land, where 75 percent of the 6.6 million Laotians live and depend on agriculture and natural resources. Farm Sirisisangpha tells the story of her unexpected journey to the United States and the unlikely paths she has taken to arrive at her like now. As the Community Advocate for the Mien, Hmong and Laotian communities at the International Community Health Services (ICHS), Farm leads support groups for women and educates her community on disease prevention and healthy living choices.
Lily wants to be a teacher when she grows up. She is only 4 but her dreams are big. She lives in Bokeo province, one of the poorest areas of north-western Laos. The people of her community are waiting for many things - safe drinking water, access to quality education for their children and clean toilets are just a few. More than 50 percent of the children in Bokeo are malnourished, and diarrhoea -- one of the biggest killers of children in poor communities -- is common due to untreated water and lack of toilets. With the help of Plan's long-term commitment to her community, lily and her friends have been learning hygiene practices to prevent illness. This, combined with new toilets and continuing work in her community, means the health of the children is improving. Lily has been a spo...
I left the camera in the floor of the house while I was making my siesta. I wanted to make a time-lapse of the clouds through the door. In half hour the two girls of the house carried inside more than half ton of rice, brought from more than 100 meters, slope (very) down. The toast was my last shot after 17 hours dragging the camera. My friends meanwhile moved few tons of rice. We drunk their traditional "lao hay", a liquor made with rice. Not too much alcohol inside, but very dangerous because is sweet and gets in very easily. This teaser film is about the health project of my friend Toon Dewerchin. In 2010 he started a Chulha low smoke stove project in Xieng Khuang province, in northern Laos. People there are cooking on open fire inside their houses and polluting themselves the air they breathe. 1,6 million people die each year in developing countries all over the world because of the smoke in their houses during cooking. The Chulha stove is an easy to build and modular solution designed by Philips design. You can build it nearly anywhere, has a chimney of course and you can save up to 50% of wood because it's much more efficient than the traditional open fire. If you are interested, please check out http://www.chulha.org or http://bit.ly/1bpGbnK for more information. Or you can check my blog post for more info...

Travel video about destination Laos. Laos is a tropical country in the heart of Indochina and was once known as ‘The realm of a million elephants’. Set amid mountains and surrounded by China, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar, Laos lay undiscovered for many years but today it is gradually opening its doors and its dreamlike royal cities, contemplative temple complexes, mysterious plains and ethnic mountain villages are now accessible to all. The capital, Vientiane, originated at the point at which the first navigable section of the Mekong River joins with the Gulf Of Thailand, once an important trading route to South China. We travel north into the pure Asia of bygone times, a land full of adventure where there is little tourism, past many villages with small markets at the roadside and vario...

It is amazing how Luang Prabang Laos can stand still in time for over three decades. While every city in the world has charting ahead toward building a new and modern city, every tile and brick on the root top and the wall in Luang Prabang still is the original form. Not quite sure whether this is a good or bad thing for the town. For the people who grew up here and migrated to other country, there is no doubt how delightful is it to see the whole town still exactly the same, since their last farewell years ago. On the other hand, the feeling and the atmosphere are somehow just not the same anymore. Luang Prabang now is much more active than what was used to be – tranquility. The streets are filled with tourist, shops, and Tuk-Tuk. Even at night, the fear of spooky ghost that is waiting in...

A short documentary about life on the Mekong River and the surroundings mountains in South East Asia. I shot this while on holiday in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Originally I'd intended to shoot some portraiture, some landscapes or some timelapse and set it to music. I ended up shooting all three along with some interviews so came up with this short piece about life along the Mekong and the surrounding mountains and how, through responsible tourism, we can help to support the local communities who live and work there.

License Video: http://dissolve.com/products?media_type=video&producer;=Pete+R&sort;_by_date=true Updated: Made the video a little more concise and the music a little bit more interesting and not repetitive. Take a deep breath and go on a journey around South East Asia through leech-infested jungles, abandoned temples, and colorful coral reefs. It was a 2 months trip that gone by so fast, like taking one deep breath. This is no ordinary "inspiring" travel video. For this, I decided to go with a much more fun and action-packed style instead of the usual go-to "inspirational" travel style that I like to do.. and a delicious "disco" music. Everything is better with disco music. :) I also experimented on many ways of shooting and framing and I think most of the footages came out really well. ...

WHY A TOUR IN ASIA? Attracted both by the beauty of Asia, we left our jobs to realise our dream: launch an online travel guide, while traveling six months through Asia. We already much traveled the world but we chose finally this continent because we always have lived strong and memorable experiences there. We defined our route following the dry seasons of each country. Eh yes! We studied tourism management and we are therefore very rigorous in the organization of a trip. This project gave a real goal to this trip: to discover even more, even further, limitless. After a few months, we found ourselves completely free of any prior, completely off the beaten tracks and we become true adventurers. And it is there, you really feel the joy, the pride of all the emotions experienced. It's crazy,...
First attempt at a trailer for the video of "the long way to Bangkok." I decided to make a few trailers just to give me a chance to practice before I go ahead and make the real thing - and to check all my software and hardware can cope with the HD video content. I'm off to the countryside tomorrow to do some Muay Thai for a couple of weeks so won't have another chance to practice for a little while - but will get to work on some more light hearted trailers! I hope this trailer conveys some of the epic scenes we encountered on our journey to Bangkok. The map is a bit blurred I know...need to find a higher res map so If anyone has one... All video content straight from the camera - always learning new things about video...I already wish I had taken more footage and used a higher contrast ...

Exploring the Golden Triangle near Laos & Myanmar. Language barrier, embrace it. Travel guide book, dump it. Fear of street food, chuck it. Liberate yourself from all that. Wake up expecting anything. Mai pen rai (no worries). Because "hey, you're in Thailand." Bike an uncharted oxcart path among lush rice paddies and garlic fields. Be startled by an ornate Buddhist temple quietly sitting in the middle of a jungle-filled valley. Relish a truly homemade curry and stare at the jagged limestone hills that have not changed for thousands of years. Say to yourself, "Is it Tuesday?" Even that doesn't matter because you're in Thailand. So mai pen rai.
