Situated in the western part of Tokushima and nearly in the center of Shikoku, the Iya area is one of the three large "hidden mountain regions" in Japan, forming a part of Mt. Tsurugi Quasi-National Park. Deep in the bosom of Mt. Tsurugi-san, the second tallest mountain in Shikoku, the region is surrounded by mountains in the Shikoku Mountain district, with a deep valley formed among the mountains cut through by the limpid Iya-gawa River, a tributary of the Yoshino-gawa River.Nana-Magari (seven curves) is known as the most dangerous spot in the valley. On a rock overhanging there stands a lovely Manikin Piss, because of the tale that says travelers used to urinate from the spot to show their bravery. The height of the rock, 200 meters above sea level, makes you cringe just glancing down below.The vine bridge over the Iya-gawa River, called "Iya-no-Kazura-bashi," is a 45-meter-long and 2-meter-wide suspension bridge with a height of 14 meters from the water level. Designated a national important folkloric property as one of Japan's three rare bridges, the bridge is rebuilt every three years. If you go deeper upstream into the recesses of Iya, you will find a double vine bridge made up of female and male bridges, called "Oku-iya Niju Kazura-bashi."

During a (ridiculously hot) trip to Tokushima over summer vacation, Jordan took us to an old farmhouse in the mountains of the Iya Valley, a very very remote part of Tokushima prefecture on the island of Shikoku. After over an hour of driving, we found ourselves at Chiiori House, a 300+ year old farmhouse with a real thatched roof. Jordan was giving a running narrative, but in the end it was inaudible because of the stupid cicadas.
Did I mention that August in Japan = deafening cicadas and unbearable heat?

Konnichi wa minna-san TOTTI desu!!! 😋
Die nächsten Tage verbrachte ich auf der kleinsten Hauptinsel Japans: Shikoku. Allein auf der Überfahrt mit dem Zug von Okayama nach Takamatsu hatte ich einen herrlichen Ausblick auf das Meer.
Zunächst machte ich mich auf den Weg nach Iya Valley. Dort überquerte ich tapfer die Kazurabashi und wanderte bis zur Peeing Boy Statue.
Am darauffolgenden Tag fuhr ich nach Kochi, um mir dort den Katsurahama Beach anzuschauen und einen kurzen Spaziergang am Niyodo River zu machen.

Iya Valley
The Iya Valley (祖谷渓谷 Iya Keikoku) region in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan is a scenic area known for its dramatic mountain valleys, thatched roof farmhouses and historic vine bridges. Although access has improved in recent years, the Iya Valley and the inner parts of Shikoku have historically been remote and difficult to enter, making them a favorite retreat for refugees and defeated warriors. Most notably, members of the Taira clan (aka Heike clan) were rumored to have entered the area after losing the Genpei War to the Minamoto clan in the late 12th century.
In modern times, the Iya Valley has become an increasingly popular tourist destination due to its natural splendor and to being one of the last few vestiges of old world Japan. Although the west part of the valley (known as Nishi-Iya) has good road access and other tourist facilities, the eastern area known as Higashi-Iya (東祖谷) or Oku-Iya (奥祖谷) is still relatively difficult to access and thus the natural beauty is largely undisturbed. Several vine bridges, once the only method for crossing the rivers, continue to span the valleys and have become a popular tourist attraction.

Valley
A valley is a low area between hills, often with a river running through it.
In geology, a valley or dale is a depression that is longer than it is wide. The terms U-shaped and V-shaped are descriptive terms of geography to characterize the form of valleys. Most valleys belong to one of these two main types or a mixture of them, (at least) with respect to the cross section of the slopes or hillsides.
Valley terminology
A valley in its broadest geographic sense is also known as a dale. A valley through which a river runs may also be referred to as a vale. A small, secluded, and often wooded valley is known as a dell or in Scotland as a glen. A wide, flat valley through which a river runs is known in Scotland as a strath. A mountain cove is a small valley, closed at one or both ends, in the central or southern Appalachian Mountains which sometimes results from the erosion of a geologic window. A small valley surrounded by mountains or ridges is sometimes known as a hollow. A deep, narrow valley is known as a cwm (also spelled combe or coombe). Similar geological structures, such as canyons, ravines, gorges, gullies, and kloofs, are not usually referred to as valleys. See also: "chine". A valley formed by erosion is called an erosional valley; a valley formed by geologic events such as drop faults or the rise of highlands is called a structural valley.

Situated in the western part of Tokushima and nearly in the center of Shikoku, the Iya area is one of the three large "hidden mountain regions" in Japan, forming a part of Mt. Tsurugi Quasi-National Park. Deep in the bosom of Mt. Tsurugi-san, the second tallest mountain in Shikoku, the region is surrounded by mountains in the Shikoku Mountain district, with a deep valley formed among the mountains cut through by the limpid Iya-gawa River, a tributary of the Yoshino-gawa River.Nana-Magari (seven curves) is known as the most dangerous spot in the valley. On a rock overhanging there stands a lovely Manikin Piss, because of the tale that says travelers used to urinate from the spot to show their bravery. The height of the rock, 200 meters above sea level, makes you cringe just glancing down below.The vine bridge over the Iya-gawa River, called "Iya-no-Kazura-bashi," is a 45-meter-long and 2-meter-wide suspension bridge with a height of 14 meters from the water level. Designated a national important folkloric property as one of Japan's three rare bridges, the bridge is rebuilt every three years. If you go deeper upstream into the recesses of Iya, you will find a double vine bridge made up of female and male bridges, called "Oku-iya Niju Kazura-bashi."

During a (ridiculously hot) trip to Tokushima over summer vacation, Jordan took us to an old farmhouse in the mountains of the Iya Valley, a very very remote part of Tokushima prefecture on the island of Shikoku. After over an hour of driving, we found ourselves at Chiiori House, a 300+ year old farmhouse with a real thatched roof. Jordan was giving a running narrative, but in the end it was inaudible because of the stupid cicadas.
Did I mention that August in Japan = deafening cicadas and unbearable heat?

Konnichi wa minna-san TOTTI desu!!! 😋
Die nächsten Tage verbrachte ich auf der kleinsten Hauptinsel Japans: Shikoku. Allein auf der Überfahrt mit dem Zug von Okayama nach Takamatsu hatte ich einen herrlichen Ausblick auf das Meer.
Zunächst machte ich mich auf den Weg nach Iya Valley. Dort überquerte ich tapfer die Kazurabashi und wanderte bis zur Peeing Boy Statue.
Am darauffolgenden Tag fuhr ich nach Kochi, um mir dort den Katsurahama Beach anzuschauen und einen kurzen Spaziergang am Niyodo River zu machen.

The Iya Valley (Iyakei) is a sheltered and private mountainous valley along the Iya River in western Tokushima Prefecture. Its steep forested slopes are connected to the outside world by a zigzag, sometimes incredibly narrow mountain road that leads the valley. Since the Iya valley located secluded regions, it is difficult to access, however, that is what attracts visitor to the area who want to experience a traditional, nature.
Historically the Iya Valley has been difficult a place to enter, and used as a refuge for members of the defeated Taira or Heike Clan who escaped to the region toward the end of the 12th century after losing the Gempei War (1180 to1185). Their descendants can still be found around the tiny mountain villages that dispersedly existing.
The Iya Valley is usually divided into two areas. Nishi Iya (West Iya) located around the entrance to the valley and is slightly more developed and more accessible as there are relatively frequent buses to some of the major attractions. Oku Iya (Inner Iya, also called Higashi Iya or East Iya) lies further back into the valley so is difficult to reach without a rental car or other means of private transportation.

A rental car is recommended to visit the area.
1. To Nishi Iya (West Iya)
*From Awa Ikeda Station to Kubo, take a bus and transfer to another bus bound for Nijukazurabashi or Mount Tsurugi. Get off at the Nijukazurabashi bus stop.
The one way journey will take 2 hours with a cost of 1790 yen. There are only 4 buses a day. Moreover buses from Kubo to the bridge operate only on weekends and holidays from April to November.
2. To Oku Iya (Inner Iya)
Rental car stores are available around Oboke and Awa Ikeda Stations.
A rental car is recommended, particularly for visiting the less traveled Oku Iya area. Note: The roads are very narrow and have frequent blind curves, which make driving both hazardous and slow.

Japan Travel: Mysterious lands, Iya Valley hidden village of Heike. Tokushima02 Moopon
The Iya Valley (Iyakei) is a sheltered and private mountainous valley along the Iya River in western Tokushima Prefecture. Its steep forested slopes are connected to the outside world by a zigzag, sometimes incredibly narrow mountain road that leads the valley. Since the Iya valley located secluded regions, it is difficult to access, however, that is what attracts visitor to the area who want to experience a traditional, nature.
Historically the Iya Valley has been difficult a place to enter, and used as a refuge for members of the defeated Taira or Heike Clan who escaped to the region toward the end of the 12th century after losing the Gempei War (1180 to1185). Their descendants can still be found around the tiny mountain villages that dispersedly existing.
The Iya Valley is usually divided into two areas. Nishi Iya (West Iya) located around the entrance to the valley and is slightly more developed and more accessible as there are relatively frequent buses to some of the major attractions. Oku Iya (Inner Iya, also called Higashi Iya or East Iya) lies further back into the valley so is difficult to reach without a rental car or other means of private transportation.

A rental car is recommended to visit the area.
1. To Nishi Iya (West Iya)
*From Awa Ikeda Station to Kubo, take a bus and transfer to another bus bound for Nijukazurabashi or Mount Tsurugi. Get off at the Nijukazurabashi bus stop.
The one way journey will take 2 hours with a cost of 1790 yen. There are only 4 buses a day. Moreover buses from Kubo to the bridge operate only on weekends and holidays from April to November.
2. To Oku Iya (Inner Iya)
Rental car stores are available around Oboke and Awa Ikeda Stations.
A rental car is recommended, particularly for visiting the less traveled Oku Iya area. Note: The roads are very narrow and have frequent blind curves, which make driving both hazardous and slow.

Here's a short video taken from the Nijukazurabashi Bus Stop in Tokushima, Japan. You'll see that there are several houses built on the mountain. It's not surprising that most of the people living in these homes are of the senior population, not all of these houses are occupied.
If you have your own car, I think it will not be hard to live at these mountains because there are concrete roads leading to the homes on top.

Iya
Situated in the western part of Tokushima and nearly in the center of Shikoku, the Iya area is one of the three large "hidden mountain regions" in Japan, forming a part of Mt. Tsurugi Quasi-National Park. Deep in the bosom of Mt. Tsurugi-san, the second tallest mountain in Shikoku, the region is surrounded by mountains in the Shikoku Mountain district, with a deep valley formed among the mountains cut through by the limpid Iya-gawa River, a tributary of the Yoshino-gawa River.Nana-Magari (seven curves) is known as the most dangerous spot in the valley. On a rock overhanging there stands a lovely Manikin Piss, because of the tale that says travelers used to urinate from the spot to show their bravery. Chiiori House (篪庵) - Iya Valley, Tokushima (祖谷渓谷, 徳島)
During a (ridiculously hot) trip to Tokushima over summer vacation, Jordan took us to an old farmhouse in the mountains of the Iya Valley, a very very remote part of Tokushima prefecture on the island of Shikoku. After over an hour of driving, we found ourselves at Chiiori House, a 300+ year old farmhouse with a real thatched roof. Jordan was giving a running narrative, but in the end it was inaudible because of the stupid cicadas. Did I mention that August in Japan = deafening cicadas and unbearable heat? Shameless plug time! Kazurabashi Vine Bridge Travel Guide

A major tourist attraction in the area, this bridge charges a "toll" of 500 Yen to cross. Konnichi wa minna-san TOTTI desu!!! 😋 Die nächsten Tage verbrachte ich auf der kleinsten Hauptinsel Japans: Shikoku. Allein auf der Überfahrt mit dem Zug von Okayama nach Takamatsu hatte ich einen herrlichen Ausblick auf das Meer. Zunächst machte ich mich auf den Weg nach Iya Valley. Dort überquerte ich tapfer die Kazurabashi und wanderte bis zur Peeing Boy Statue. Am darauffolgenden Tag fuhr ich nach Kochi, um mir dort den Katsurahama Beach anzuschauen und einen kurzen Spaziergang am Niyodo River zu machen. Die nächsten Tage verbrachte ich auf der kleinsten Hauptinsel Japans: Shikoku. Allein auf der Überfahrt mit dem Zug von Okayama nach Takamatsu hatte ich einen herrlichen Ausblick auf das Meer.
Zunächst machte ich mich auf den Weg nach Iya Valley. Dort überquerte ich tapfer die Kazurabashi und wanderte bis zur Peeing Boy Statue.
Am darauffolgenden Tag fuhr ich nach Kochi, um mir dort den Katsurahama Beach anzuschauen und einen kurzen Spaziergang am Niyodo River zu machen.
