Inuyama Castle (犬山城, Inuyama-jō) is located in the city of Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The castle overlooks the Kiso River, which serves as the border between Aichi and Gifu prefectures. Inuyama Castle is one of only 12 surviving Japanese castles built before the Edo period.
Inuyama Castle is often claimed as the oldest castle in Japan. Its original construction was completed in 1440. According to Engishiki (a Heian Period-book), Harigane Shrine (a Shinto shrine) was moved to make way for the castle. That structure has been heavily augmented over time, and the current towers were completed in 1537, by Oda Nobuyasu, Oda Nobunaga's uncle. Though the antiquated architectural style of the watchtower atop the tenshu has in the past led many historians to believe this to be the oldest extant tenshu in Japan, that honor goes to Maruoka Castle, built in 1576. Construction on the main tenshu (donjon) at Inuyama began in 1601, and continued through 1620.
The castle was the center of power for the Naruse clan, retainers of the Matsudaira clan and rulers of the Inuyama Domain. Inuyama Castle was unique in Japan in that it was privately owned. The donjon (tenshu) has been designated as national treasure. However, it was seized by the Japanese government as part of the Meiji Restoration. In 1891, the castle was damaged in the Great Nōbi earthquake, and it was returned to the Naruse family in 1895, on the condition that they repair and maintain it. In 2004, ownership of the castle was turned over to a foundation set up by the Aichi Prefecture's Board of Education.
Inuyama (犬山市, Inuyama-shi) is a city in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, north of the Nagoya Metropolis.
As of May 2015, the city had an estimated population of 74,200 and a population density of 911 persons per km². The total area was 74.90 square kilometres (28.92 sq mi).
Inuyama lies along the edge of Aichi Prefecture, separated from neighboring Gifu Prefecture by the Kiso River.

Gifu Prefecture
During the Edo period, Inuyama was a sub-domain of Owari Domain, entrusted to senior retainers of the Nagoya-branch of the Tokugawa clan.
Immediately following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, it was established as an independent feudal han, until the 1871 abolition of the han system. With the cadastral reforms of October 1, 1889, the town of Inuyama was created. Inuyama was elevated to city status in 1954.
A castle (from Latin: castellum) is a type of fortified structure built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by nobility. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a palace, which is not fortified; from a fortress, which was not always a residence for nobility; and from a fortified settlement, which was a public defence – though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Usage of the term has varied over time and has been applied to structures as diverse as hill forts and country houses. Over the approximately 900 years that castles were built, they took on a great many forms with many different features, although some, such as curtain walls and arrowslits, were commonplace.
A European innovation, castles originated in the 9th and 10th centuries, after the fall of the Carolingian Empire resulted in its territory being divided among individual lords and princes. These nobles built castles to control the area immediately surrounding them, and were both offensive and defensive structures; they provided a base from which raids could be launched as well as protection from enemies. Although their military origins are often emphasised in castle studies, the structures also served as centres of administration and symbols of power. Urban castles were used to control the local populace and important travel routes, and rural castles were often situated near features that were integral to life in the community, such as mills and fertile land.
Inuyama Castle is a Japanese National Treasure and one of just 12 castles that have retained their "Samurai era" central towers. It's located a short distance north of Nagoya city and a is a must-see spot if you're a fan of Japanese history. The donjon of Inuyama castle is one of the only 5 Japan's natinal treasure donjons. It is the oldest of all donjons in Japan and precious in learning medieval Japanese castles. Inuyama castle is not very big but it looks stately and graceful. In particular, I'd like to recommand visiting the castle in spring because the beauty of the donjon in full-blown cherry blossoms is beyond description. The castle is located within a 50 minute train ride and walk of Nagoya station, so I think Inuyama castle could be one of your destinations if you're planning a trip to Nagoya city. Thanks.

We woke up late and decided to visit the national treasure that is Inuyama Castle for half a day, just outside of Nagoya! "Inuyama (犬山), literally meaning "dog mountain", is a city in Aichi Prefecture, not far from Nagoya. It is most famous for its small but beautiful castle, which is one of Japan's oldest wooden castles in its original state, having survived the turmoils of wars and disasters over the years." http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3350.html
