Ravi Shankar (IPA: [ˈrɔbi ˈʃɔŋkɔr]; 7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012), born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury, his name often preceded by the title Pandit, was an Indian musician and composer who was one of the best-known exponents of the sitar in the second half of the 20th century as a composer of Hindustani classical music.
Shankar was born to a Bengali family in Benares, British India, and spent his youth touring India and Europe with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956.
In 1956 he began to tour Europe and the Americas playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Beatles guitarist George Harrison. His influence on the latter helped popularize the use of Indian instruments in pop music throughout the 1960s. Shankar engaged Western music by writing compositions for sitar and orchestra, and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1986 to 1992, he served as a nominated member of Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Parliament of India. He continued to perform up until the end of his life. In 1999, Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.

A clip from "Ravi Shankar - Tenth Decade in Concert," available on DVD from Ravi's own East Meets West Music (www.eastmeetswestmusic.com). * * * Cinematographer and director Alan Kozlowski presents an intimate look at a 91-year-old Ravi Shankar performing in southern California in October 2011. Kozlowski offers a uniquely personal perspective on Ravi Shankar. The filmmaker has studied music with Ravi since 1978, and has produced a documentary honoring Ravi called "Sangeet Ratna" and co-produced with George Harrison a collection of Ravi's work called "In Celebration." The love of subject is clear in the film, but it's Ravi's raw and powerful performance that leaves the most lasting impression. Though Ravi has curtailed his busy touring schedule, his playing continues to draw intense prais...

Music video for a song from an independent Hindi album. A classicist to the core, Dr Madhumohan had given up a lucrative career in Canada to create a full-length Hindi music album as a tribute to the bygone eras. Purity being his oeuvre, his album was full of forgotten themes: melody, poetry, civility, decency, subtlety and even live-orchestration. This ethos carried the making of this video too - families, friends, well-wishers & fairies all pitching in their talents and support. Result: a restrained and understated video, never too loud for the song, and never too boring for the detail-loving aesthete. --- Credits Producer: Dr Madhumohan Komaragiri Music: Dr Madhumohan Komaragiri Firefly Director: Phani Eggone Firefly Cinematographer: Sanath PC Art Director: Ravi Shankar

Interview with Pandit Ravi Shankar. DD In 1987.
This has to be one of the frankest interviews ever! I never expected Pandit-ji and Sukanya to open their hearts so wide - to let me and my viewers inside. There are very few love stories that compare to this one. I had done my research, as I always do; I asked all the questions I had planned - but they both gave me back so much more in return. I remember Anushka was sitting in the control room during the interview. She was hearing their full story for the first time - and was in tears. When the interview was over, she ran to her parents and hugged them both tight, crying and laughing, and kept saying: ‘I never knew all this Ma..I never knew’.. For those who missed it - it’s here for all to see..and feel.. http://www.simigarewal.com

Meditation goes with Nikhil Banerjee ........ Raag Mishra Kafi -by Nikhil Banerjee A Syed Wajid's Presentation ----------- Pandit Jee said in an Interview ....... "Indian music is based on spiritualism; that is the first word, you must keep it in your mind. Many people misunderstand and think it's got something to do with religion – no, absolutely no! Nothing to do with religion, but spiritualism – Indian music was practiced and learned to know the Supreme Truth. Mirabai, Thyagaraja from the South, Haridas Swami, Baiju – all these great composers and musicians were wandering saints; they never came into society, nor performed in society".
