Burundi (/bəˈrʊndᵻ/ or /bəˈrʌndi/), officially the Republic of Burundi (Kirundi: Republika y'Uburundi,[buˈɾundi]; French: République du Burundi, [buʁundi] or [byʁyndi]), is a landlocked country in the African Great Lakes region of East Africa, bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. It is considered part of Central Africa. Burundi's capital is Bujumbura. The southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika.
The Twa, Hutu and Tutsi peoples have lived in Burundi for at least five hundred years. For more than 200 years, Burundi was an independent kingdom. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Germany colonized the region. After the First World War and Germany's defeat, it ceded the territory to Belgium. The Belgians ruled Burundi and Rwanda as a European colony known as Ruanda-Urundi. Their intervention exacerbated social differences between the Tutsi and Hutu, and contributed to political unrest in the region. Burundi gained independence in 1962 and initially had a monarchy, but a series of assassinations, coups, and a general climate of regional instability culminated in the establishment of a republic and one-party state in 1966. Bouts of ethnic cleansing and ultimately two civil wars and genocides during the 1970s and again in the 1990s left the country undeveloped and its population as one of the world's poorest. 2015 witnessed large-scale political strife as President Pierre Nkurunziza opted to run for a third term in office, a coup attempt failed and the country's parliamentary and presidential elections were broadly criticized by members of the international community.

The Burundian government has served notice that it could withdraw its troops from the African Union force fighting militants in Somalia. The country says the main reason for a withdrawal is due to their troops not being paid. According to Emmanuel Ntahomvukiye- the Defence minister, The European Union has not paid the salaries of the Burundian troops for ten months. The decision of the EU to cut off its funding for the troops is tied to the ongoing political crisis in the country .Burundi is the second largest contributor to the African Union mission in Somalia. They have over 5 thousand troops in the country.

Since then, hundreds of people have been killed and more than 300,000 Burundians have fled to neighbouring countries. Our reporters, Nicolas Germain and Julie Dungelhoeff, despite a few visa problems, met Burundian refugees in Uganda and Tanzania. If we had watched this scene in a film, we would have thought the screenwriter was pushing it a bit. Yet this is really what happened. Our plane was moving on the runway of Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. Destination Kigali, the Rwandan capital. We we...

A Burundi army general says senior officers are "dismissing" President Pierre Nkurunziza, amid unrest over his bid to be re-elected for a third term. Maj Gen Godefroid Niyombareh announced that a national salvation committee had been set up to run the country. However, it is not clear how much support he and the other officers have. “La Sape” is a unique movement based in Congo that unites fashion-conscious men who are ready to splurge money they don’t really have on designer clothes. Dressing in stark contrast with their surroundings, these elegant ambiance-makers become true local celebrities… but this fame comes at a price. The Republic of the Congo in Central Africa can’t boast of high standards of living. Yet, there are men here who are prepared to spend a fortune on designer suits. They call themselves “sapeurs” – members of the “La Sape” movement. “La Sape” comes from French and stands for “The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”. For its adherents, it’s all about style and elegance, the right combination of colours and textures, brand-names and the highest quality materials. They derive true joy fr...

http://www.worldbank.org/health - September 24, 2012 -- Until recently, women in Burundi's Batwa community didn't give birth in health facilities, but at home, where they died of complications too often. But women like Denise Ntakirutimana now benefit from a program that pays health facilities for delivery of quality maternal and child health services.
The story is set in a mix of rural Rwanda and Burundi, it follows a mother’s narration of her children Kanyange and Kagabo going through varying levels of malnutrition. The story is meant to create awareness on the symptoms, treatment and the elements of a balanced diet.

The Twa (also known as "Batwa") people are the poorest in Burundi. Traditionally a tribe of hunter-gatherers, they suffered discrimination as land was distributed at Burundi's independence. The current population of around 40,000 is largely landless and isolated, with limited access to health and education. Stand Up and Build will help by encouraging Twa children in Muyinga to attend the new college, to learn technical skills which may lift themselves and their families out of their deep poverty.
Since April 2015, thousands of Burundians have fled electoral violence at home. The majority have crossed into neighbouring Tanzania, overwhelming resources at the Nyarugusu refugee camp. The Tanzania Red Cross Society is providing health care services to the refugees, seeing an average of 200 patients per day.

Burundi Travel Video - Beautiful Burundi has been blighted by a generation of ethnic conflict, but with the advent of peace, this charming country may at long last be able to put its dark past to rest. A tiny little nation of soaring mountains and languid lakeside communities, Burundi is sandwiched between the African giants of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Tanzania. The scenery is stunning and the welcome warm, and it may once again begin to receive a trickle of travellers as the word gets out that the war is over. The steamy capital Bujumbura has a lovely location on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and just outside the city are some of the finest inland beaches on the continent. Ask the old Africa hands about Burundi before the war, and it is the sort of place they go misty-e...

I spent the entire month of August in Burundi, Africa on a missions trip with a non profit organization called Sister Connection. We worked with widows and orphans from all over the country, visiting homes, building relationships, and hosting camps (like VBS) for the kids. This is a compilation of video I took on the trip in an effort to capture what it was like to travel to one of the poorest countries on earth. Music: The Fountain by Vocal Few
