Desmond Dekker (16 July 1941 – 25 May 2006) was a Jamaican ska, rocksteady and reggae singer-songwriter and musician. Together with his backing group the Aces (consisting of Wilson James and Easton Barrington Howard), he had one of the earliest international reggae hits with "Israelites" (1968). Other hits include "007 (Shanty Town)" (1967), "It Mek" (1969) and "You Can Get It If You Really Want" (1970).
Desmond Adolphus Dacres was born in Saint Andrew Parish (Greater Kingston), Jamaica, on 16 July 1941. Dekker spent his early formative years in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. From a very young age he would regularly attend the local church with his grandmother and aunt. This early religious upbringing as well as Dekker's enjoyment of singing hymns led to a lifelong religious commitment. Following his mother's death as a result of illness, he moved to the parish of St. Mary and then later to St. Thomas. While at St. Thomas, Dekker embarked on an apprenticeship as a tailor before returning to Kingston, where he secured employment as a welder. His workplace singing had drawn the attention of his co-workers, who encouraged him to pursue a career in the music industry. In 1961 he auditioned for Coxsone Dodd (Studio One) and Duke Reid (Treasure Isle), though neither audition was successful. The young unsigned vocalist then successfully auditioned for Leslie Kong's Beverley's record label and was awarded his first recording contract.
Desmond may refer to:
A shanty town or squatter area is a settlement of plywood, corrugated metal, sheets of plastic, and cardboard boxes. Such settlements are usually found on the periphery of cities, in public parks, or near railroad tracks, rivers, lagoons or city trash dump sites. Sometimes called a squatter, informal or spontaneous settlement, a typical shanty town often lacks proper sanitation, safe water supply, electricity, hygienic streets, or other basic human necessities.
Shanty towns are mostly found in developing nations, but also in some parts of developed nations.
Shanty is probably from Canadian French chantier, a winter station established for the organization of lumberjacks.
Another possible derivation is from the Irish language sean tí meaning old house.
Hutment means an "encampment of huts". When the term is used by the military, it means "temporary living quarters specially built by the army for soldiers". The term is also a synonym for shanty town, particularly in developing countries.
An ace is a playing card.
Ace, Aces, ACE or ACES may also refer to:
The Israelites (/ˈɪzriəˌlaɪtsˌ/; Hebrew: בני ישראל Bnei Yiśraʾel) were a Semitic people of the Ancient Near East, who inhabited part of Canaan during the tribal and monarchic periods. and lived in the region in smaller numbers after the fall of the monarchy. The prevailing academic opinion today is that the Israelites, who eventually evolved into the modern Jews and Samaritans, were an outgrowth of the indigenous Canaanites who had resided in the area since the 8th millennium BCE.
In the Hebrew Bible, the term "Israelites" refers to the direct descendants of any of the sons of the patriarch Jacob, or of the people called Israel, and of a worshipper of the God of Israel, Yahweh. In the period of the divided monarchy it referred only to inhabitants of the northern kingdom, and is only extended to cover people of the southern kingdom in post-exilic usage. Other terms sometimes used include the "Hebrews" and the "Twelve Tribes" (of Israel).
The Jews, which include the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Simeon and partially Levi, are named after the southern Israelite Kingdom of Judah. The word "Jews" is found in Kings (16:6), Chronicles (I, 4:18), and in numerous passages in Jeremiah, Zechariah and the book of Esther. The Samaritans, whose religious texts consist of the five books of the Samaritan Torah (but which do not contain the books comprising the Jewish Tanakh), do not refer to themselves as Jews, although they do regard themselves as Israelites, in accordance with the Torah.

A surprise hit for the spring and summer of 1969 ... released in October 1968 by Jamaican singer Desmond Dekker, the single was the first UK reggae number one and among the first to reach the US top ten. Most of us in the US had never heard of reggae yet and the sound was strange, yet the tune seemed oddly familiar with the lower register harmonizing vocals during each chorus reminiscent of those heard in early 60's pop rock 'n roll songs. That aspect of it made it sound a bit out of time and had many of us thinking we were hearing an early 60's "golden oldie" we had somehow forgotten. It was hugely popular all the same, a catchy song with elusive lyrics that were difficult to understand except here and there. Despite "Israelites" being recorded and released in 1968, the Uni 45 discography...

Mama, mama, mama
It licked too hot
I've got the flipping hiccups, mama
I've got the flipping hiccups, papa
Mama, mama, mama
I am feeling sick
Papa, papa licked me
With the licking stick
I've got the flipping hiccups, mama
I've got the flipping hiccups, papa
Mama, please tell daddy
Do not hit me with that
Mama, I'm feeling pain
I'm really, really feeling
Mama, help me tell my daddy
To help me, I can't stand it, I can't
No, I can't stand it
