Murders in the Rue Morgue Trailer - Directed by Robert Florey and starring Bela Lugosi, Leon Ames, Bert Roach, Brandon Hurst, D'Arcy Corrigan. THE CLASSIC MOVIE THEATRE:
Babes in Toyland is a Laurel and Hardy musical film released on March 10, 1934. The film is also known by its alternate titles Laurel and Hardy in Toyland, Revenge Is Sweet (the 1948 European reissue title), March of the Wooden Soldiers and Wooden Soldiers (in the United States).
Based on Victor Herbert's popular 1903 operetta Babes in Toyland, the film was produced by Hal Roach, directed by Charles Rogers and Gus Meins, and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Originally filmed in black-and-white, there are also two computer colorized versions.[1]
Although the 1934 film makes use of many of the characters in the original play, as well as several of the songs, the plot is almost completely unlike that of the original stage production. In contrast to the stage version, the film's story takes place entirely in Toyland, which is inhabited by Mother Goose (Virginia Karns) and other well known fairy tale characters.

Charles Mingus
Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) was an American jazz double bassist, composer and bandleader. His compositions retained the hot and soulful feel of hard bop, drawing heavily from black gospel music and blues, while sometimes containing elements of Third Stream, free jazz, and classical music. He once cited Duke Ellington and church as his main influences.
Mingus espoused collective improvisation, similar to the old New Orleans jazz parades, paying particular attention to how each band member interacted with the group as a whole. In creating his bands, he looked not only at the skills of the available musicians, but also their personalities. Many musicians passed through his bands and later went on to impressive careers. He recruited talented and sometimes little-known artists, whom he utilized to assemble unconventional instrumental configurations. As a performer, Mingus was a pioneer in double bass technique, widely recognized as one of the instrument's most proficient players.

Max Roach
Maxwell Lemuel "Max" Roach (January 10, 1924 – August 16, 2007) was an American jazz percussionist, drummer, and composer.
A pioneer of bebop, Roach went on to work in many other styles of music, and is generally considered alongside the most important drummers in history. He worked with many famous jazz musicians, including Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown, Eric Dolphy and Booker Little. He was inducted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1992.
Roach also led his own groups, and made numerous musical statements relating to the African-American civil rights movement.
Biography
Early life and career
Roach was born in the Township of Newland, Pasquotank County, North Carolina, which borders the southern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp, to Alphonse and Cressie Roach. Many confuse this with Newland Town in Avery County. Although Roach's birth certificate lists his date of birth as January 10, 1924, Roach has been quoted by Phil Schaap as having stated that his family believed he was born on January 8, 1925. Roach's family moved to the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York when he was 4 years old. He grew up in a musical home, his mother being a gospel singer. He started to play bugle in parade orchestras at a young age. At the age of 10, he was already playing drums in some gospel bands. In 1942, as an 18-year-old fresh out of Boys High School, he was called to fill in for Sonny Greer with the Duke Ellington Orchestra when they were performing at the Paramount Theater.

Babes in Toyland is a Laurel and Hardy musical film released on March 10, 1934. The film is also known by its alternate titles Laurel and Hardy in Toyland, Revenge Is Sweet (the 1948 European reissue title), March of the Wooden Soldiers and Wooden Soldiers (in the United States).
Based on Victor Herbert's popular 1903 operetta Babes in Toyland, the film was produced by Hal Roach, directed by Charles Rogers and Gus Meins, and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Originally filmed in black-and-white, there are also two computer colorized versions.[1]
Although the 1934 film makes use of many of the characters in the original play, as well as several of the songs, the plot is almost completely unlike that of the original stage production. In contrast to the stage version, the film's story takes place entirely in Toyland, which is inhabited by Mother Goose (Virginia Karns) and other well known fairy tale characters.

Based on Victor Herbert's popular 1903 operetta Babes in Toyland, the film was produced by Hal Roach, directed by Charles Rogers and Gus Meins, and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Originally filmed in black-and-white, there are also two computer colorized versions.[1]
Although the 1934 film makes use of many of the characters in the original play, as well as several of the songs, the plot is almost completely unlike that of the original stage production. In contrast to the stage version, the film's story takes place entirely in Toyland, which is inhabited by Mother Goose (Virginia Karns) and other well known fairy tale characters.

Mary Roach is an American author, specializing in popular science and humor. As of 2016, she has published seven books,: Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers (2003), Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife (2005) (published in some markets as Six Feet Over: Adventures in the Afterlife), Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex (2008), Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void (2010), My Planet: Finding Humor in the Oddest Places, Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal (2013), and Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War (2016).
Roach is noted for her curiosity and humor in addition to her research. Her many humor-laced articles in various publications over the decades include her monthly humor column, "My Planet", in Reader's Digest.
After college, Roach moved to San Francisco, California, and spent a few years working as a freelance copy editor. She worked as a columnist, and also worked in public relations for a brief time. Her writing career began while working part-time at the San Francisco Zoological Society, producing press releases on topics such as wart surgery on elephants. On her days off from the SFZS, she wrote freelance articles for the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday Magazine.[4]
In 1986, she sold a humor piece about the IRS to the San Francisco Chronicle. That piece led to a number of humorous, first-person essays and feature articles for such publications as Vogue, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, Discover Magazine, National Geographic, Outside Magazine, and Wired.[5][6] She has also written articles for Salon.com and tech-gadget reviews for Inc.com.
From 1996 to 2005, Roach was part of "the Grotto," a San Francisco-based project and community of working writers and filmmakers. It was in this community that Roach got the push she needed to break into book writing.[7] While being interviewed by Alex C. Telander of BookBanter, Roach answered the question of how she got started on her first book:
A few of us every year [from the Grotto] would make predictions for other people, where they'll be in a year. So someone made the prediction that, 'Mary will have a book contract.' I forgot about it and when October came around I thought, I have three months to pull together a book proposal and have a book contract. This is what literally lit the fire under my butt.[8]
Although Roach writes primarily about science, she never intended to make it her career. Roach stated in an interview with TheVerge.com, when asked what exactly got her hooked on writing about science, "To be honest, it turned out that science stories were always, consistently, the most interesting stories I was assigned to cover. I didn’t plan it like this, and I don't have a formal background in science, or any education in science journalism. Actually I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology."[9]
TV and radio shows have repeatedly asked Roach to appear as a guest so they could hear her opinions. She has appeared on programs like Coast to Coast AM,[10] The Daily Show,[11] and The Colbert Report.[12] Roach has had monthly columns in Reader's Digest ("My Planet") and Sports Illustrated for Women ("The Slightly Wider World of Sports").[5]
Besides being a best-selling author, Roach is involved in many other projects. Roach reviews books for The New York Times, and was the guest editor of the Best American Science and Nature Writing 2011 edition. She also serves as a member of the Mars Institute's Advisory Board, as an ambassador for Mars One[13] and was recently asked to join the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary.

Twenty hours earlier:
The inside of a dirty Greyhound bus station in Orlando at two in the morning. The next bus to Tampa left at five and change. Sleeping one bench over was either a terrific look-a-like or an honest to goodness hobo. A girl named Maxine was half-asleep to my left. She was studying literature at some local Florida school and was on her way back there after a short trip to visit her parents.
Out came two sheets of paper torn from my friend's notebook back in West Palm Beach. Dr. Zhivago got boring, and with nothing else to read but the nutritional values of junk food already eaten, it was the perfect time and atmosphere to compose the questions to be asked of Mr. Dundee.
Truth be told I can't really say I would be asking them as it seems they would be asking themselves.
There are some fighters you interview, or are forced to interview that you don't know what to ask. Sure in a few years time they might have stories that will put my meeting with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to shame, but at that moment, like me, they are nobodies. Angelo Dundee was another matter.
I couldn't stop writing those questions and I can only wish I wrote that way for the rest of my life. The questions didn't come out that way, and you can watch the video for proof of that, but right then they were perfect. In Angelo's words regarding his new book, "it was easy." Like nothing at all. That hobo, and some ordinary girl never to be seen again acted as the catalyst. Inspiration-that pay by the instance call girl muse most of us can never get in touch with when needed most.
Anyway I had gotten half way to the end when Maxine, now awake, took a look at what I was doing.
-What's that?
Stopping, I considered a response.
-Well it's partly why I'm going to Clearwater. I have to interview somebody over there and than hop on a bus going the other way.
Not really sure why I didn't tell her. Maybe it would matter, maybe it wouldn't, but its possible there was some sense of fear, because if I said anymore the second half of the questions wouldn't stick to the paper as effortlessly as the first.
She went to make a call, while the last 10 questions finally came out.
It was only two thirty and there was another three long hours to go.
Zhivago came out and I soldiered onward. After a few pages, the literature major came back.
-What language is that?
-It's Russian. Dr Zhivago.
Stay tuned for the conclusion to this meandering, aimless tale.......
