Couple seriously injured after confronting thieves on Gold Coast street

A woman has suffered severe facial injuries after being attacked by a pair of thieves armed with a machete on the Gold Coast on Saturday morning.

The couple were woken about 2am by noises outside their home on Kangaroo Avenue at Coombabah and confronted two male strangers, police allege.

A verbal argument followed before police arrived and the men allegedly fled the scene, leaving behind property stolen from neighbouring residences.

Less than two hours later the two men returned to the couple's home where it is believed they again confronted the intruders and were attacked with a machete.

As a result, both were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The woman, 35, suffered a "severe cut from her lip to her forehead on the left side of her face" and her partner, 34, sustained a severe cut on his left arm, according to According to emergency services.

Police took two local men into custody a short time after the attack.

On Saturday night, a 35-year-old man and an 18-year-old man have both been charged with one count of unlawful possession of stolen property and two counts of acts intended to maim, disfigure or disable. They are due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

Neighbour Dallas Robson described the victims as "a lovely couple" who had a young girl together.

The attack was "completely out of the blue".

"We have had minor thefts of things that have been left out in the street, but nothing like this," she said.

"Why would someone do that with a little child there?"

Ms Robson said the female victim was "like a big version of her little girl" and both were "very chirpy".
