Catherine de' Medici's court festivals

Catherine de' Medici's court festivals were a series of lavish and spectacular entertainments, sometimes called magnificences, laid on by Catherine de' Medici, the queen consort of France from 1547 to 1559 and queen mother from 1559 until her death in 1589. As queen consort of Henry II of France, Catherine showed interest in the arts and theatre, but it was not until she attained real political and financial power as queen mother that she began the series of tournaments and entertainments that dazzled her contemporaries and continue to fascinate scholars. Biographer Leonie Frieda suggests that "Catherine, more than anyone, inaugurated the fantastic entertainments for which later French monarchs also became renowned".

For Catherine, these entertainments served a political purpose that made them worth their colossal expense. She presided over the royal government at a time when the French monarchy was in steep decline. With three of her sons on the throne in succession and the country torn by religious civil war, Catherine set out to show not only the French people but foreign courts that the Valois monarchy was as prestigious and magnificent as it had been during the reigns of Francis I and her husband Henry II. At the same time, she believed these elaborate entertainments and sumptuous court rituals, which incorporated martial sports and tournaments of many kinds, would occupy her feuding nobles and distract them from fighting against each other to the detriment of the country and the royal authority.

Alex Joseph

Alex Joseph (1936 – September 27, 1998) (born Alec Richard Joseph; also referred to as Ronald Ellison) was an outspoken polygamist and founder of the Confederate Nations of Israel, a Mormon fundamentalist sect. As mayor of Big Water, Utah, Joseph was the first Libertarian Party mayor of a community in the United States.

Mormon fundamentalism

Joseph was not raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, but was baptized into it in his late teens. He became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in 1965. In 1969, he abandoned the LDS Church and briefly joined a group of Mormon fundamentalists under the leadership of Rulon C. Allred in Pinesdale, Montana. In time, he convinced four students at the University of Montana to marry him and become his plural wives. His wives were not Latter Day Saints; rather, two were Roman Catholics, one was a Methodist, and one was a Presbyterian. The parents of the students were outraged and confronted Allred with their displeasure. Allred was displeased that Joseph had married without his permission, and after Joseph pointed out that Allred had also taken multiple wives, Joseph was asked to leave the colony in Montana. Joseph's exposure to Mormon fundamentalist groups eventually led him to see them as oppressive and corrupt. "Atrocities are committed and people have no recourse because they're outside the law, like the Mafia", commented Joseph. From then on, Joseph followed his own Christian-based religious convictions.

Nicky Romero

Nick Rotteveel van Gotum (born 6 January 1989), better known by his stage name Nicky Romero, is a Dutch DJ and music producer. He has worked with, and received support from DJs, such as Tiësto, Fedde le Grand, Sander van Doorn, David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Armand Van Helden, Avicii and Hardwell. He currently ranks No. 18 on DJ Magazine's annual Top 100 DJs poll. He is known for his viral hit song "Toulouse", as well as for having a number one hit single in the UK with "I Could Be the One" with Avicii. Romero has been the target of public ridicule doubting his production and DJ mixing abilities.

Early life

Nick Rotteveel was born and raised in Amerongen, the Netherlands. He moved to Kingston, Ontario, Canada for a year, and later moved back to the Netherlands to continue his education where he did his final semesters in France.

Career

School was never his interest, so after graduating he worked as a bartender for a while and also started producing music. Eventually, he was signed to his first label Once Records, which went on to release the tracks "Privilege" and "Qwerty". Shortly after the track entitled "Funktion One" was released. From that moment on everything rapidly changed. Dutch DJ/producer Madskillz signed "Funktion One" to Azucar (from Madskillz and Gregor Salto) and later added "Hear My Sound". In 2009 he remixed Sidney Samson and Tony Cha Cha's track "Get on the Floor" and a bootleg for David Guetta entitled "When Love Takes Over". Both tracks got a lot of publicity where Ministry of Sound contacted him to do some remixes on their label. About a few hundred movies came up on YouTube from DJs who played the Nicky Romero bootleg When Love Takes Over. He also made a remix for the Dirty South track "Alamo".
