Auk

An auk is a bird of the family Alcidae in the order Charadriiformes. Extant auks range in size from the least auklet, at 85 g (3 oz) and 15 cm (5.9 in), to the thick-billed murre, at 1 kg (2.2 lb) and 45 cm (18 in). They are good swimmers and divers, but their walking appears clumsy. Modern auks can fly (except for the extinct great auk). Due to their short wings, auks have to flap their wings very quickly in order to fly.

Auks are superficially similar to penguins having black-and-white colours, upright posture and some of their habits. Nevertheless, they are not closely related to penguins, but rather are believed to be an example of moderate convergent evolution.

Auks live on the open sea and go ashore only for breeding, although some species, like the common guillemot, spend a great part of the year defending their nesting spot from others.

Several species have different common names in Europe and North America. The guillemots of Europe are murres in North America, if they occur in both continents, and the little auk becomes the dovekie.

American University of Kuwait

The American University of Kuwait is a private liberal arts institution based on the American model of higher education in Kuwait City, Kuwait. Although established in 2003, the University opened to students, faculty and the general public in September 2004. It is sister colleges with Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire. Professor Dr. Nizar Hamzeh currently serves the office of the President.

Campus

The AUK campus is located at the intersection of Salem Al Mubarak Street and Amr Ibn Al 'As Street, a major intersection in the upscale shopping and residential district of Salmiya. It is located near several major malls, including the famous Marina World and Al Fanar Mall, as well as neighboring the Symphony Style Hotel Kuwait and the Olympic Council of Asia Headquarters.

Formerly a public high school, the campus was completely rehabilitated, renovated and rebuilt. New buildings and facilities were added in order to bring the University up to standards for its September 2004 opening; and in 2006, a five-story building for the Liberal Arts department was opened.

American University

American University (AU or American) is a private research university in Washington, D.C., United States, affiliated with the United Methodist Church, although the university's curriculum is secular. The university was chartered by an Act of Congress on February 24, 1893 as "The American University," when the bill was approved by President Benjamin Harrison.

AU was named the most politically active school in the nation in The Princeton Review's annual survey of college students in 2008, 2010, and 2012. The university has six schools, including the School of International Service (SIS), currently ranked 8th in the world for its graduate programs and 9th in the world for its undergraduate program in International Affairs by Foreign Policy, and the Washington College of Law. As of 2016, roughly 7,710 undergraduate students and 5,230 graduate students are currently enrolled.

A member of the Division I Patriot League, its sports teams compete as the American University Eagles.

Kuwait University

Kuwait University (Arabic: جامعة الكويت‎, abbreviated in English as Kuniv) is one of the public universities in Kuwait.

History

Kuwait University (KU), (in Arabic: جامعة الكويت), was established in October 1966 under Act N. 29/1966. The university was officially inaugurated on 27 November 1966 to include the College of Science, the College of Arts, the College of Education and the College for Women. The university is the state’s first public institution of higher education and research.

The university aims to preserve and transmit knowledge through scholarship, encourage innovation and development in the arts and the sciences through addressing issues of national, regional and global significance. It has made significant advances since its establishment nearly 50 years ago and has evolved into a multi-faculty institution of higher learning composed of 17 colleges offering 76 undergraduate, 71 graduate programs.

Kuwait University’s facilities are geographically spread over six campuses, providing sites for intellectual exchanges across disciplines and faculties offering programs in the sciences, engineering, humanities, medical and social sciences. In keeping with its dynamic plans for development, the university continues to add new programs, facilities and faculties, ensuring that students are at the cutting-edge of scientific advances and global initiatives.
