The Vancouver Aquarium (officially the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre) is a public aquarium located in Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In addition to being a major tourist attraction for Vancouver, the aquarium is a centre for marine research, conservation and marine animal rehabilitation.
The Vancouver Aquarium was one of the first facilities to incorporate professional naturalists into the galleries to interpret animal behaviours. Prior to this, at the London Zoo Fish House, naturalists James S. Bowerbank, Ray Lankester, David W. Mitchell and Philip H. Gosse (the creator of the word aquarium) had regularly held "open house" events, but the Vancouver Aquarium was the first to employ educational naturalists on a full-time basis. Aquarium research projects extend worldwide, and include marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation.
On August 9, 2010 Prime Minister Stephen Harper and B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell announced capital funding of up to $15 million. The province would donate $10 million in funding over the next three years to help pay for a planned expansion of the 54-year-old facility, Premier Gordon Campbell said. Harper added that Ottawa would hand over up to $5 million to the aquarium for infrastructure upgrades. The aquarium, however, remains a nonprofit organization. The property is owned by the City of Vancouver and rented to the Aquarium for $40,000 a year since 1991 (prior to which it was $1 per year).
Vancouver (i/væŋˈkuːvər/ or /vænˈkuːvər/) officially the City of Vancouver, is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia, Canada.
The 2011 census recorded 603,502 people in the city, making it the eighth largest Canadian municipality. The Greater Vancouver area of around 2.4 million inhabitants is the third most populous metropolitan area in the country, the second largest city on the United States–Canada border, and the most populous in Western Canada. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada; 52% of its residents have a first language other than English. Vancouver is classed as a Beta global city. The City of Vancouver encompasses a land area of about 114 square kilometres, giving it a population density of about 5,249 people per square kilometre (13,590 per square mile). Vancouver is the most densely populated Canadian municipality, and the fourth most densely populated city with over 250,000 residents in North America, behind New York City, San Francisco, and Mexico City.
An aquarium (plural: aquariums or aquaria) is a vivarium of any size having at least one transparent side in which water-dwelling plants or animals are kept and displayed. Fishkeepers use aquaria to keep fish, invertebrates, amphibians, aquatic reptiles such as turtles, and aquatic plants. The term, coined by English naturalist Philip Henry Gosse, combines the Latin root aqua, meaning water, with the suffix -arium, meaning "a place for relating to". The aquarium principle was fully developed in 1850 by the chemist Robert Warington, who explained that plants added to water in a container would give off enough oxygen to support animals, so long as their numbers do not grow too large. The aquarium craze was launched in early Victorian England by Gosse, who created and stocked the first public aquarium at the London Zoo in 1853, and published the first manual, The Aquarium: An Unveiling of the Wonders of the Deep Sea in 1854.
An aquarist owns fish or maintains an aquarium, typically constructed of glass or high-strength acrylic. Cuboid aquaria are also known as fish tanks or simply tanks, while bowl-shaped aquaria are also known as fish bowls. Size can range from a small glass bowl to immense public aquaria. Specialized equipment maintains appropriate water quality and other characteristics suitable for the aquarium's residents.

For Thanksgiving, I decided to go to Vancouver and visit The Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park. I've been to a few aquariums and The Vancouver Aquarium ranks as one of the nicest i've seen. It certainly keeps the Monterey Bay and Shedd Aquarium as peers. They have an amazing series of displays showcasing the maritime wildlife of the PNW as well as some beautiful displays of jellyfish, S. American characins (tetras), seahorses, pacu (a mildly larger characin than say, Bleeding Heart Tetras), etc... Some of the other displays were of penguins, amphibians, an interactive light display (of hanging, paper jellyfish with colored LEDs inside) and a walk through tropical setting with a few hookbills. The only problem i had with this aquarium is there didn't appear to be any cephalopods. I...

A tiny male sea otter pup — estimated to be just two to four weeks old — is now in 24-hour care at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, after concerned members of the public found it swimming alone in open water off northern Vancouver Island on Sunday. Although the pup appears healthy, he requires care night and day from the Rescue Centre team, just as he would from his mother. Staff and volunteers are spending shifts feeding, bathing and grooming the newborn pup, which has not yet been named.

The Vancouver Aquarium truly is spectacular. Now when I was a kid I lived in Vancouver for a while and the Vancouver Aquarium was my first aquarium experience and I would have to credit the Vancouver Aquarium for giving me, as a young boy, an appreciation and fascination with sea and marine life. This visit to the Vancouver Aquarium wasn't my first time back since I was a kid, I had a quick walk through a number of years ago but it was very rushed and I didn't have a camera with me. This visit to the Vancouver Aquarium I had as much time as I wanted and I had my Panasonic GH4 camera with me to film whatever I wanted.

Found an old tape I shot at the Vancouver Aquarium in 1998. Cool to see how things used to be.
At the end of summer 2013, it became apparent that a wasting syndrome had spread through the extremely overpopulated sunflower sea star populations in Vancouver Harbour and Howe Sound. Sunflower sea stars appeared to have simply fallen ill; thousands died and disintegrated in shallow water where their numbers were most dense. What could have caused this massive die-off? Join the Vancouver Aquarium's Vice President of Marine Science, Dr. Jeff Marliave and Staff Veterinarian, Dr. Martin Haulena for an evening presentation that explores the potential causes of the disappearing sunflower stars in Howe Sound and Vancouver Harbour.

Join the Vancouver Aquarium for an evening with Kate Le Souef, Tsunami Debris Cleanup Coordinator with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Kate traveled to Japan in November 2014 to attend a week-long event with other shoreline cleanup coordinators, to learn about the impact of the 2011 tsunami and the debris that drifted across the Pacific and to create a legacy: increased awareness of everyday marine debris in our oceans. Kate walked away from the experience with a new perspective. Each piece of debris is connected to a person who lost something—sometimes someone—in a tragic event that transformed peoples’ lives forever. Despite the tragedy, the tsunami brought people around the Pacific Ocean closer together, and today, the treasure in the tsunami story is a tale of the triumph of ...
Join the Vancouver Aquarium for a presentation on prehistoric and modern day sea monsters. Adam McGirr is the Vice President of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club and has been studying strange creatures like Sea Serpents and Sasquatch for over 15 years. He has participated in numerous field expeditions and conferences, made several television appearances, as well as interviews in newspapers and magazines on the subject of monsters and mysteries. By day, Adam McGirr is a technical writer and trainer.
Join the Vancouver Aquarium and Dr. Edith Widder to learn about glow-in-the-dark creatures and how they helped Dr. Widder lure the giant squid, “the kraken”, out of hiding, and are helping her to find and stop ocean pollution. More info: http://www.vanaqua.org/kraken
"Darling it's better, down where it's wetter! Take it from me!" YEP, that's right! I got to visit Ariel & the rest of the Mer-People in Atlantica! It was such an amazing experience! Just kidding! I wish I could see Atlantica in real life! But for real though, my friend Kaitlin and I had the wonderful opportunity of visiting one of my favourite attractions here in the beautiful city of Vancouver, Canada; the Vancouver Aquarium! I've always loved everything about the ocean & what's under the water and I was lucky enough to spend part of my childhood growing up on the ocean! So any time I get the chance to re-visit the Vancouver Aquarium, I take it! No matter how many times you've been before, every time you go back, there's always new things to see, just like Pocahontas said "The water's ...
Join the Vancouver Aquarium and Georgia Strait Alliance for a celebration of the Salish Sea! Our evening begins with a status report on the biodiversity of Howe Sound followed by a screening of a 30-minute documentary film, “The Unknown Sea”. The film introduces us to the recently-named Salish Sea ecosystem through the eyes of a budding marine biologist touring the sea by historic schooner. Then, Dr. Joe Gaydos, scientist and conservationist, will use striking photographs and an entertaining narrative to take us further into understanding the workings of the Salish Sea and the myriad creatures that call it home.
I haven't been to the Vancouver Aquarium since I was quite young. A lot has changed from what I can remember (for one thing, the zoo out front is long gone...) but it was a great adventure! I got as much footage as I could before my camera battery died, so please enjoy our adventure through the Vancouver Aquarium!
Join us for a Canadian wildlife presentation by Dr. Sean Brillant that focuses on how understanding and protecting our ocean heritage is done in the nexus of science, education and public outreach. More info: http://www.vanaqua.org/whales-turtles-and-more
