Paul Sass

Paul Sass (born 4 August 1988) is an English mixed martial artist currently competing in Bellator's Lightweight division. A professional competitor since 2007, he has also formerly competed for the UFC.

Mixed martial arts career

Early career

Sass' professional record stands at 14-2 with eight of the victories by triangle choke and one by triangle armbar. These nine triangle victories have earned him a world submission record. His penultimate fight on the domestic circuit was against Rob Sinclair, the current British Lightweight Champion. Sass defeated Sinclair by split decision.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Sass signed a four-fight deal with the UFC, joining Kurt Warburton, Tom Blackledge and Rob Broughton as the new additions to the UFC roster.

In his UFC debut at UFC 120 he submitted Canadian Mark Holst in the first round with a Triangle Choke. Sass picked up Submission of the Night honors and a $60,000 bonus following the event.

Sass faced Michael Johnson on 1 October 2011 at UFC on Versus 6. Sass defeated Johnson in the first round via heel hook submission.

UFC 146

UFC 146: dos Santos vs. Mir was a mixed martial arts (MMA) pay-per-view event (PPV) promoted by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on May 26, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card featured five MMA bouts which were shown on PPV, as well as seven preliminary bouts which were shown on FX, and Facebook. This was the first time in UFC history that the main card featured all heavyweight bouts. It was the twelfth UFC event of 2012.

The main event featured the UFC Heavyweight Champion, Junior dos Santos, defending his title against former two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. The contest was heavily promoted, featuring the return of UFC Primetime to promote the UFC Heavyweight Championship. The co-main event of the evening was a battle between former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, and newly acquired Strikeforce heavyweight, Antônio Silva, who made his UFC debut.

Background

Frank Mir was riding a three fight win streak leading up to this event, including a submission victory over Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, a friend and mentor of Junior dos Santos, at UFC 140. Nogueira refused to tap to the kimura lock submission attempt, until it broke after his arm snapped under the pressure, then he tapped. Not only was Mir the first fighter to ever submit Nogueira, but he did so in devastating fashion. This was the first title defense for dos Santos since winning the belt by knocking out Cain Velasquez in November 2011 at UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos.

Jacob Volkmann

Jacob Joseph Volkmann (born September 5, 1980) is an American mixed martial artist. A professional MMA competitor since 2007, Volkmann has also formerly competed for the UFC.

Background

Volkmann was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and graduated from Henning High School. Volkmann wrestled for the Otter Tail Central Bulldogs and holds the schools all-time record for career wins and also won three state titles. Volkmann then attended University of Minnesota, where he was a Big Ten Conference wrestling champion and a three time NCAA All-American. In 2001 as a freshman he finished fourth, then in 2003 as junior finished third and then once again as a senior in 2004 finished fourth. After graduating from Minnesota, Volkmann attended the Northwestern Health and Science University in Bloomington, Minnesota where he earned his chiropractic doctorate and it was during this time that he also began competing in Greco-Roman wrestling at the senior level, and met UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk through this program, who asked Volkmann to help train for a title fight. Volkmann later embarked on his own career in mixed martial arts.
