Directed by Addison Post Music Composed by Noel Heroux In October 2016, while filming another project, I drove from Reno, NV to Des Moines Iowa taking mostly backroads. One of the roads I drove, was Rt. 50 in Nevada, affectionately known as the Loneliest Road in America for it’s long meandering stretches of two-lane-blacktop intersecting several mountain passes and kept company only by a few small towns. A few months later I traveled the Loneliest Road again, this time without a destination. I packed my camera gear with the intention of capturing a few interviews and documenting my experience while I wandered aimlessly for a week. William Least-Heat Moon describes the motivation for such a journey in his book Blue Highways: “With a nearly desperate sense of isolation and a growing suspic...
The cross-country motorcycle journey lasted five weeks and was 9521miles/15250km long. We rode Virginia's Skyline Drive and parts of the BlueRidge Parkway to meet up with the Trans-America Trail in Tennessee. The TAT is 4,700 miles long and consists of mostly dirt roads, forest roads, farm roads and 4x4 Jeep trails and mountain passes and ends on Pacific Ocean at Port Orford in southwestern Oregon. Riding solo after reaching Colorado's San Juan Mountains I decided to veer from the TAT some in order to see Mesa Verde and Arches National Park and Canyon Lands in Utah, then checked out a stretch of the Pony Express Trail into Nevada and returned to the TAT until I reached the beach at Port Orford. The return trip included a little stretch of Rt 101, Wyoming's historic Original Green River Ren...
In the US, most Americans are taught that if you work hard and get a college degree then you will be successful in the end. Since America is seen as the land of opportunity, tens of thousands of people move to the US in hopes of doing just that. But economist and Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz argues that the inequality gap in America has become so great that the chances of those at the bottom making it to the middle or upper-class are bleak. Richard Wolff, author of the book Occupy the Economy, joins us with his take.
