At least three people have died in the latest outbreak of violence in East Timor between opponents and supporters of independence for the troubled territory.
Witnesses said at least two people were killed as militiamen fired shots and hurled bombs at groups of rock-throwing separatists.
Indonesian police sealed off large sections of the capital, Dili, following the bloody clashes, while frightened residents stayed indoors.
The violence erupted just days before East Timor is expected to go to the polls in a U-N supervised referendum on independence.
Emotions were running high on Thursday - the next to last day of campaigning for the referendum on East Timor's future status.
Monday's U-N-supervised referendum will offer a choice between independence or remaining part of Indonesia as an autonomous province.
Daily clashes have become increasingly bloody between rival factions in the run-up to the historic ballot.
Thursday's violence erupted as some 15-thousand opponents of independence took part in a final rally in the capital, Dili.
Many in the crowd appeared to be members of militia groups.
Dozens brandished homemade shotguns and other weapons, violating a U-N imposed ban on the carrying of weapons.
At one point during the rally, militants started stoning the headquarters of the main pro-independence group.
Officers fired warning shots in an apparent attempt to clear the streets but failed to disperse the crowds.
Witnesses said two people were killed as militiamen fired shots and hurled bombs at rock throwing separatists.
One body was left lying in a pool of blood.
Another protester was shot to death by Indonesian police, who were accused by witnesses of doing little to prevent attacks by militiamen.
But unconfirmed reports said the death toll was higher.
Three people sustained gunshot wounds and many more were stabbed or hit by rocks and bottles.
Blasts from homemade grenades repeatedly rocked the area
Security forces attempted to contain the violence and forcefully arrested some activists.
Indonesian police sealed off large sections of Dili following the bloody clashes.
Many frightened residents stayed indoors.
The lead-up to the ballot has been marred by attacks and threats against civilians and U-N staff by those opposed to independence.
Earlier in the day, in the eastern area of Dili, a mob of pro-independence supporters set upon two anti-independence Indonesian supporters.
Civilians in favour of independence claimed the militia shot at and set fire to one of their houses.
The smouldering shells of burnt out cars and houses were testimony to the attack.
Several civilians were injured, including an old woman.
In tears, she said stones were thrown at her.
Indonesian police were quickly on the scene and tried to diffuse the situation.

Daily clashes between small rival gangs have become increasingly bloody.
As many as 60-thousand people have fled their homes because of violence seemingly designed to scupper the ballot.
Some fear the violence will result in a decisive win for the independence camp.
Meanwhile, in a surprise development, Justice Minister Muladi said jailed East Timor resistance leader Xanana Gusmao was expected to be released on September 15.
Gusmao, a hero to supporters of Timorese independence, was captured and jailed by Jakarta in 1992 for leading armed resistance to Indonesian rule in the territory.
The U-N has already twice postponed the ballot because of violence in the former Portuguese colony.

Timor
Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor, on the eastern part, and Indonesia, on the western part. The Indonesian part, also known as West Timor, constitutes part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Within West Timor lies an exclave of East Timor called Oecusse District. The island covers an area of 30,777 square kilometres. The name is a variant of timur, Malay for "east"; it is so called because it lies at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Language, ethnic groups, and religion
Anthropologists identify eleven distinct ethno-linguistic groups in Timor. The largest are the Atoni of western Timor, and the Tetum of central and eastern Timor. Most indigenous Timorese languages belong to the Timor–Babar branch of the Austronesian languages spoken throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The non-Austronesian languages are thought to be related to languages spoken on Halmahera and in Western New Guinea. Some are so mixed it is difficult to tell which family they descend from.

i/ˌiːst ˈtiːmɔːr/) or Timor-Leste (/tiˈmɔːr ˈlɛʃteɪ/), Tetum: Timór Lorosa'e, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste, Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a sovereign state in Maritime Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The country's size is about 15,410 km2 (5,400 sq mi).
East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by Indonesia and was declared Indonesia's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially FRETILIN) and the Indonesian military.

Indonesian National Police
The Indonesian National Police (Indonesian: Kepolisian Negara Republik Indonesia) is the police force of Indonesia. It was formerly a part of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). The police were formally separated from the military in April 1999, a process which was formally completed in July 2000.The organization is widely known for its corruption, violence and incompetence.
The strength of the Indonesian National Police stood at approximately 387,470 in 2011 and the number increasing year by year. The national police force was formally separated as a branch of the armed forces and placed under the Office of the President in 1999. It also includes 12,000 marine police and an estimated 40,000 People’s Security (KAMRA) trainees who serve as a police auxiliary and report for three weeks of basic training each year.
The headquarters, known as Markas Besar/Mabes in Indonesian, is located in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
History
When large parts of Indonesia was under Dutch colonial occupation until the 1940s, police duties were performed by either military establishments or colonial police known as the veldpolitie or the field police. Japanese occupation during WW II brought changes when the Japanese formed various armed organisations to support their war. This had led to the distribution of weapons to military trained youths, which were largely confiscated from the Dutch armoury.

Monday's U-N-supervised referendum will offer a choice between independence or remaining part of Indonesia as an autonomous province.
Daily clashes have become increasingly bloody between rival factions in the run-up to the historic ballot.
Thursday's violence erupted as some 15-thousand opponents of independence took part in a final rally in the capital, Dili.
Many in the crowd appeared to be members of militia groups.
Dozens brandished homemade shotguns and other weapons, violating a U-N imposed ban on the carrying of weapons.
At one point during the rally, militants started stoning the headquarters of the main pro-independence group.
Officers fired warning shots in an apparent attempt to clear the streets but failed to disperse the crowds.
Witnesses said two people were killed as militiamen fired shots and hurled bombs at rock throwing separatists.
One body was left lying in a pool of blood.
Another protester was shot to death by Indonesian police, who were accused by witnesses of doing little to prevent attacks by militiamen.
But unconfirmed reports said the death toll was higher.
Three people sustained gunshot wounds and many more were stabbed or hit by rocks and bottles.

Earlier in the day, in the eastern area of Dili, a mob of pro-independence supporters set upon two anti-independence Indonesian supporters.
Civilians in favour of independence claimed the militia shot at and set fire to one of their houses.
The smouldering shells of burnt out cars and houses were testimony to the attack.
Several civilians were injured, including an old woman.
In tears, she said stones were thrown at her.
Indonesian police were quickly on the scene and tried to diffuse the situation.

In April 2013, I will begin my solo motorbike adventure starting in Perth, Western Australia and ending in Tallinn, Estonia. The journey is expected to take 12 months crossing some of the most remote and culturally rich locations in the world. I have previously travelled to nearly 50 countries, most of which are 2nd and 3rd world countries. I choose these countries because it is there that I more often experience the vividly intense nature of life & death and the world’s most natural beauty. Some of the more accessible for visitors are in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park and the Ijen Crater in East Java, Mount Rinjani in Lombok and perhaps easiest of all, Mount Batur in Bali. A list of 226 Indonesian mountains has recently been compiled.
Hardly surprisingly in the world's largest archipelago, beaches are significant attractions. Aside from the obvious like Bali, there are wonderful beaches in off-the-beaten-track locations in Maluku, Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi. In a nation of 18,000+ islands, the options are almost endless.
Indonesia has some of the largest remaining tracts of tropical forest anywhere in the world, and these support an incredibly diverse wildlife from Orangutans and other primates to critically endangered Javan Rhinoceros and Tigers, and an extraordinarily wide range of bird species. Forest areas recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites are Ujung Kulon National Park in West Java, and three huge parks in Sumatra, which together comprise the Tropical Rain Forest Heritage of Sumatra: Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Gunung Leuser National Park and Kerinci Seblat National Park.
Further east, Komodo Island is the home of the remarkable Komodo Dragon and a very diverse marine life. Close to the very eastern limit of Indonesia, the remote Lorentz National Park in Papua has a permanent glacier, and is the single largest national park anywhere in Southeast Asia.

Borobudur in Central Java is the world's largest Buddhist monument, dating from the 8th century, and nearby Prambanan is a remarkable Hindu monument dating from just a few years later. Those two, together with the charm of Yogyakarta, make for a popular cultural combination in Central Java.
Also in Central Java, the Dieng Plateau is home to the oldest extant temples in Indonesia, predating Borobudur by some 100 years, and just north of Solo, the early man archaeological excavation at Sangiran is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In such a vast archipelago it is hardly surprising that there are some very distinct and unique cultures, often contained in relatively small areas. Bali has a unique Hindu culture, descended from the great Javanese Majapahit Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries. The whole island is adorned by beautifully kept temples (pura), and there is a seemingly endless procession of colourful ceremonies. Some of the better known are the mother temple at Besakih, Pura Ulun Danau Bratan, and Pura Uluwatu.
Further east, Sumba is home to one of the few remaining megalithic cultures anywhere on earth. In Sulawesi, the Tana Toraja region is famous for spectacular animist burial rites. Visiting the vast hinterland of Papua in the far east of the country requires considerable planning, an awful lot of money, and a tolerance for extremely challenging conditions. However, for those who want a true wilderness experience and the opportunity to witness first-hand cultures that have had very little contact with the outside world, it is hard to think of a better option anywhere on earth.

In April 2013, I will begin my solo motorbike adventure starting in Perth, Western Australia and ending in Tallinn, Estonia.
The journey is expected to take 12 months crossing some of the most remote and culturally rich locations in the world.
I have previously travelled to nearly 50 countries, most of which are 2nd and 3rd world countries.
I choose these countries because it is there that I more often experience the vividly intense nature of life & death and the world’s most natural beauty.
I am what you could call a YOYO - Year on, year off.
I work as a FIFO for a year, saving up all I can to then go travelling for around 12 months.
I then return back to mining to save up for another travel venture.
On this particular trip I will be using an adventure motorbike customised specifically for this journey. I will also be taking my camera kitted out with 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses.
I intend to capture my journey through the lens of my camera with the end goal to produce a coffee table photo book.
I am also inviting people to take part in my journey by giving me photo challenges along the way.
The photo challenges people give me are a way to directly be involved, without having to leave home. You can direct me to take any image you please so long as it is not too criminal, too dangerous or too financially draining.
Essentially, the photo challenges will help guide my adventure by influencing where I travel along the way.
I have travelled for many years and I have already broken my neck once on a motorbike and am extremely aware of issues surrounding rider safety.
I will be travelling with a special GPS device, which will allow me to be located by GPS on any map, and more importantly, it has an SOS function for emergencies.
The countries which I intend to travel are;
Australia - Timor - Indonesia - Malaysia - Borneo - Thailand - Cambodia - Vietnam - Loas - Bhutan - Nepal - India - India (Tibet) - Pakistan - (then one of three possible routes) - The Stans or Iran to Turkey or Oman to North Africa - Estonia.
This trip is a once in a lifetime motorcycle photographic adventure, and I can’t wait to get started.
