Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist epic science-fiction drama film directed by Fritz Lang. Lang and his wife, Thea von Harbou, wrote the silent film, which starred Brigitte Helm, Gustav Fröhlich, Alfred Abel and Rudolf Klein-Rogge. Erich Pommer produced it in the Babelsberg Studios for Universum Film A.G.. It is regarded as a pioneering work of the science-fiction genre in movies, being among the first feature-length movies of the genre.
Made in Germany during the Weimar Period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city's ruler, and Maria, a poor worker, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes of their city. Filming took place in 1925 at a cost of approximately five million Reichsmarks, making it the most expensive film ever released up to that point. The motion picture's futuristic style shows the influence of the work of the Futurist Italian architect Antonio Sant'Elia.
The film met with a mixed response upon its initial release, with many critics praising its technical achievements and social metaphors while others derided its "simplistic and naïve" presentation. Because of its long running-time and the inclusion of footage which censors found questionable, Metropolis was cut substantially after its German premiere, and large portions of the film went missing over the subsequent decades.

This version of Metropolis is as complete as much as is now possible, and has the added attraction of key Colour sequences done in the style of the 20's Technicolor two colour process. Many big movies of this period had color sequences as an added attraction, but its high cost and technical difficulty restricted its use for some decades.

Trailer 7 of 365. Sir Fritz Lang's most beloved Epic, Metropolis, was restored and reconstructed a few years ago, and one of the results of that restoration was a superb trailer that gets across every emotion, theme, and idea presented within this incredible film. I also swoon over the score that accompanies the images. No Copyright Intended. I DO NOT OWN this material, nor do I plan on financial gain as a result of my using this video.

Transformed Maria Robot Brought to Life in Metropolis (1927, Germany). Metropolis (1927) is a stylized, visually-compelling, melodramatic silent film set in the dystopic, 21st century city of Metropolis - a dialectical treatise on man vs. machine and class struggle. Austrian director Fritz Lang's German Expressionistic masterpiece helped to develop the science-fiction genre, with innovative imagery from cinematographer Karl Freund, art design by Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut, and Karl Vollbrecht, and set design by Edgar Ulmer. It was the last of Lang's silent films. The Maschinenmensch is an archetypal example of the Frankenstein complex, where artificial creations turn against their creator and go on a rampage. Artificial beings with a malevolent nature were a popular theme at the time, as...

MUSIC: PANTyRAiD - Dreaming Window drawing (3m x 6m) @ Concertgebouw in Bruges inspired by the film Metropolis. Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction film directed by Fritz Lang. Set in the year 2026, Metropolis takes place in a dystopian society where wealthy industrialists rule from vast tower complexes, oppressing the workers who live in the depths below them. The drawing is placed on the largest window of the 'Concertgebouw' (Concert building) in Bruges with the perfect backdrop of the city. There are many different perspectives to the work wich has the effect of a changing picture throughout the day.
Eugen Schüfftan (1893 - 1977) was the creator of the special effects for Fritz Lang's silent classic "Metropolis". His more radical experiments, utilizing custom techniques of optical printing with partially transparent mirrors, have never been seen. In this 1927 experiment, Schüfftan transforms footage from a love scene from "Metropolis" into a Futurist-style study of motion. This short clip was discovered on an unlabeled film reel in the archive of the F.W. Murnau Foundation, Wiesbaden, Germany, by Kurt Ralske, in December 2010.

Here come the hounds
You'd better turn and fight, no place to hide
Ripped up inside
Tried your best, but you'll get no free ride
No reason to complain
You're just another one, it's all the same
We are all the same
Crack the whip of modern times
Come meet the dispossessed
Metropolis, you feeble bitch
Carving tombstones for the rich
Watch you fall down
We'll laugh as all your dreams we'll pound
This is the sound
Rock bottom
As you hit the ground
Disillusioned, feeling drained
You're just another one, it's all the same
Crack the whip of modern times
Come meet the dispossessed
Metropolis, you feeble bitch
Carving tombstones for the rich
Crack the whip of modern times
Come meet the dispossessed
Metropolis, you feeble bitch
Carving tombstones for the rich
Crack the whip of modern times
Come meet the dispossessed
Metropolis, you feeble bitch
