Guatemala (i/ˌɡwɑːtᵻˈmɑːləˌ ɡwæ-ˌ ɡɑː-/ GWAH-tə-MAH-lə, GWAT-ə-MAH-lə or GAH-tə-MAH-lə; Spanish: [gwateˈmala]), officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, Honduras to the east and El Salvador to the southeast. With an estimated population of around 15.8 million, it is the most populous state in Central America. A representative democracy, Guatemala's capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.
The territory of modern Guatemala once formed the core of the Mayan civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica. Most of the country was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, becoming part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 as part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved in 1841.

The construction of the inter-oceanic corridor of Guatemala, an ambitious infrastructure project of 12.000 million dollar, by which is intended to link the Pacific Ocean with the Guatemalan Caribbean, will start from April next year, official sources said. President of the Inter-Oceanic Corridor Board, Guillermo Catalan, said at the launch of the initiative feasibility studies and opinions have been completed and approved by the authorities, so it is expected that in the next nine months to start with construction. The interoceanic corridor, private sector project supported by the Government of Guatemala, seeks to unite the country's Pacific to Atlantic via a dry corridor to be built through a 372 km road and a railway and pipeline route. Guatemala's Economy Minister Sergio de la Torre opened his presentation on the country's path for economic development stressing the need to invest in social inclusion in order for economic growth to be sustainable. At the same time, he noted that without accelerating productivity and growing the economy, social development is not possible. The minister listed the country's major infrastructure projects, highlighting two main ways to grow the economy: a heavy industrial corridor that would integrate trade with Mexico, which would "open the doors to NAFTA" and lower energy costs in Guatemala by 75 percent; and a goods manufacturing corridor, with logistics to integrate Central America's markets and develop four cities in Guatemala, which the government chose as special development zones.

Coffee production in Guatemala began to develop in the 1850s. Coffee is an important element in the economy of Guatemala. Guatemala was Central America's top producer of coffee for most of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, until overtaken by Honduras in 2011. Illegal exports to Honduras and Mexico are not reflected in official statistics. The coffee industry began to develop in Guatemala in the 1850s and 1860s, initially mixing its cultivation with cochineal. Small plantations flourished in Amatitlán and Antigua areas in the southwest.[4] Initial growth though was slow due to lack of knowledge and technology. Many planters had to rely on loans and borrow from their families to finance their coffee estates (fincas) so coffee production in the country grew increasing non-Guate...

Travel video from a 2 week trip to Guatemala in 2016. Our time was spent doing volunteer work, hiking up a volcano and experiencing the Guatemalan culture. It was amazing learning about another country: the language, food, music, cities and art. From Guatemalan tortilla making to lighting fireworks off the roof of the house, I will never forget the people that we met there and the experience that we had. Thank you to everyone who was apart of my first real travel experience.
Jack learns the art of making tortilla in Antigua, Guatemala. It is not always as easy as it looks.
In Guatemala cooking is a family affair. Here is Lidia Lopez and her family making a traditional meal called Pepian. It is generally reserved for weddings or ceremonies and is served with rice and home made tortillas.
This is a great example of a traditional Guatemalan household. The people in the video are Lidia Lopez and her family from San Antonio Aguas Calientes making Pepian and tortillas. They are dressed in 'traje' which is traditional clothing Mayan women have worn for centuries. This household is very indicative of many of the homes in Guatemala today.

Guatemala has some of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in Latin American, a rate which increases significantly among the rural indigenous populations. As such, the Guatemalan Red Cross has identified maternal and child health as a priority area of work. One of the areas where the GRC's Maternal and Child Health program is currently being carried out is the western Department of San Marcos, with the support of the Norwegian Red Cross. The branch volunteers help to organize the women of the communities in support groups, to help each other learn about good practices relating to feeding and nutrition, prevention of illness, prenatal control, and the healthy development of children. Community health committees are formed and meet regularly to analyse the health situation of the ...
Guatemala spent years battling disease and extreme poverty in a nation torn apart by a 36-year civil war that included genocide of more than 1 million refugees. Since the end of the war, in 1996, these vulnerable Mayan refugees continue to battle poverty, malnutrition and disease. Less than 10 % of the population has access to health care. The idea of building a clinic in Monterrico evolved from an on-going feeding and educational program initiated in this community two years ago by a community church in Guatemala City, "The Centro Cristiana Culturalidad de Guatemala". Village leaders voiced their needs for access to healthcare on a regular basis. After Guatemala's 36-year civil war ended in 1996, the country needed to rebuild the economy. In the northern province of Alta Verapaz, however, the indigenous populations lacked both education and money to create sustainable livelihoods. They were among the poorest communities in the country. With help from Counterpart International, and funding from USAID, a series of villages in Alta Verapaz boast a growing tourism industry -- with attractions like tubing on rivers that run through caves, watching exotic birds and exploring Maya ruins. And they are in the driver's seat.

For at least three millennia native communities have thrived around Guatemala’s Lake Atitlán. Long considered one of the most beautiful and picturesque lakes in the world, this 50 square mile inland lake was designated a national park in the middle of the 20th century to encourage tourism. But in 2009, the Global Nature Fund designated Guatemala’s Lake Atitlán as its “Threatened Lake of the Year.” Producer Maria Emilia Martin reports on grass-roots efforts to save Lake Atitlán.
My girlfriend and I spent a short time in Guatemala and absolutely loved it. We explored cathedrals, museums, and gigantic markets. We took a hike up active Pacaya volcano. We lounged around Lake Atitlan and watched movies in the coffee shops when it was cold and rainy. We went on a zipline canopy tour. We went to a football game. We discussed the politics of the Guatemalan civil war with Spanish students. And we ate lots of wonderful food. Everyone should go, it's got something for everyone. Even beaches (edited).

In this Guatemala and Antigua travel video guide, I head down to Guatemala and explore scenic Antigua, hike Volcano Pacaya, take a road trip to Lake Atitlan (and ride a horse along its banks), then head north to Tikal, home to the capital of the once mighty Mayan Empire, where I climb the many temples that have been discovered at the site. * The host, Matt Stabile, of this video is the founder and editor-in-chief of the travel site http://www.TheExpeditioner.com. He also served as Director, Editor and Foley Artist for this production.

AWESOME DRONE VIDEO OF VOLCANO HIKE ACATENANGO IN GUATEMALA! LAVA, ASH & ERUPTING VOLCANO FUEGO! Last week we hiked the active volcano Acatenango in Guatemala. This one of the coolest activities you can do near Antigua, Guatemala; hiking, climbing and camping on the active volcano Acatenango while having a perfect view on the highly active volcano Fuego. The Acatenango hike is about 6 hours uphill to basecamp. At the basecamp the guide set up the tents and light the campfire to prepare dinner and keep us warm. The view from the basecamp is amazing! We were just above the clouds and therefore it felt like heaven, watching the sunset high in the white cloudy sky with highly active and erupting volcano Fuego just a stroll away. Volcano Fuego was erupting all night, spitting lava & ash high ...
Here is a little summary of my first destination in Central America in Mexico. Four years backpacking around the world, these are my experiences and my impressions of Mexico. In the next video my journey continues with my trip to Guatemala. Stay tuned and thanks for watching
November 9, 2012 www.LifeofBrennan.com There are moments in life when you just need to be bold and follow your heart. For me it came just before the end of my sophomore year of college. I realized I was on a path where I’d most likely graduate, get a job, start a family, and work until retirement, and where many people may aspire to have all this, I knew I needed something different. With the help of a cousin I was able to get connected with an orphanage in Guatemala where I could volunteer. So I took a semester off and flew to Central America to begin what would be a life changing experience. I once heard that life is 10 percent of what happens to us and 90 percent of how we react to it, and by being immersed in that culture and living with those children I learned this lesson first...

A Solo-Traveler's Guide To: Central America is the 2nd episode to my travel series. With a clearer vision, this video is a little more polished than the first one but still has the wondrous feel of the first one. This episode guides you through five intense weeks in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. While this episode does not cover the whole of Central America it covers a good amount for a 5 week journey using planes, buses, ferries, pickups, trucks and hitchhiking, and even horses. This is another learning video that goes with my book "Ready, Steady, Shoot: A Pro's Guide to Smartphone Video." It was shot with an iPhone at Casa Palopo, Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. It was edited in the camera and only trimmed slightly: a few shots were cut out, a few were made shorter, a few were moved within the sequence. What makes the best travel/vacation videos are to keep them short, very short. Look at each outing as an opportunity to make a short film, two minutes. They become scenes in your vacation, which when put together creates a lovely film about your trip. Learn how to do it all at www.ReadySteadyShoot.com the enhance eBook with embedded learning videos is only $8.99.
I read the words in New York City
Cop shoot cop cop shoot cop
In Los Angeles California I saw a man
I saw a man on the street eating his own straight from his asshole in Chicago Illinois
Let me tell you something I have seen
In Guatemala City when the police catch a kid sniffing glue
They shoot the children
