Robert Irwin Chartoff (August 26, 1933 – June 10, 2015) was an American film producer and philanthropist.
Chartoff was born on August 26, 1933 in New York City, the son of Bessie and William Chartoff. His family was Jewish. He graduated from Union College in 1955, followed by Columbia University Law School.
Chartoff produced more than thirty movies. Together with fellow producer Irwin Winkler, he won an Academy Award for Best Picture for the 1976 film Rocky.
Chartoff established the RC Charitable Foundation in 1990 to award grants to international schools and other child agencies. He served as its President. The RC Charitable Foundation gives grants awards to the Buddha Educational Trust. He served on the Community Advisory Board of the Younes and Soraya Israel Studies Center at UCLA.
Chartoff's first wife was Phyllis Raphael, with whom he had three children — Jennifer, William and Julie. They later divorced. In 1970, he married British actress Vanessa Howard, with whom he had one son, Charley. That marriage also ended in divorce. He had one daughter, Miranda, with Jenny Weyman, his third wife, with whom he was married until his death. He died at his home in Santa Monica, California in 2015 from pancreatic cancer.
Sylvester Gardenzio "Sly" Stallone (/stəˈloʊn/; Italian pronunciation: [(ɡarˈdɛntsjo) stalˈloːne]; born July 6, 1946) is an American actor, screenwriter, producer, and director. He is well known for his Hollywood action roles, particularly boxer Rocky Balboa, the title character of the Rocky series' seven films from 1976 to 2015; soldier John Rambo from the four Rambo films, which ran from 1982 to 2008; and Barney Ross in the three The Expendables films from 2010 to 2014. He wrote or co-wrote most of the 14 films in all three franchises, and directed many of the films.
Stallone's film Rocky was inducted into the National Film Registry as well as having its film props placed in the Smithsonian Museum. Stallone's use of the front entrance to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the Rocky series led the area to be nicknamed the Rocky Steps. Philadelphia has a statue of his Rocky character placed permanently near the museum. It was announced on December 7, 2010 that Stallone was voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the non-participant category.
Rocky is a 1976 American sports drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and both written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. It tells the rags to riches American Dream story of Rocky Balboa, an uneducated but kind-hearted working class Italian-American boxer working as a debt collector for a loan shark in the slums of Philadelphia. Rocky starts out as a small-time club fighter, and later gets a shot at the world heavyweight championship. The film also stars Talia Shire as Adrian, Burt Young as Adrian's brother Paulie, Burgess Meredith as Rocky's trainer Mickey Goldmill, and Carl Weathers as the champion, Apollo Creed.
The film, made on a budget of just over $1 million and shot in 28 days, was a sleeper hit; it earned $225 million in global box office receipts, becoming the highest grossing film of 1976, and went on to win three Oscars, including Best Picture. The film received many positive reviews and turned Stallone into a major star. In 2006, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Rocky is considered to be one of the greatest sports films ever made and was ranked as the second-best in the genre, after Raging Bull, by the American Film Institute in 2008.
Apollo Creed is a fictional character from the Rocky films, initially portrayed as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. He was played by Carl Weathers. He is a tough but agile African-American boxer with a Larry Holmes-like jab, and his name is a reference to the Apostle's Creed. The character was inspired by the real-life champion Muhammad Ali, having what one author remarked as the same "brash, vocal, [and] theatrical" personality. Protagonist Rocky Balboa, Creed's rival in Rocky and Rocky II, faces underdog odds (five-to-one in Rocky II) and views Creed with respect, pointedly refusing the prodding of a reporter to 'trash talk' against Creed by laconically remarking, "He's great".
In Rocky, Creed essentially cleans out his division of serious challengers and magnanimously decides to fight rookie contender Rocky Balboa for the fan spectacle. In the film and its sequel, Balboa and Creed find themselves basically evenly matched in the ring, ending up friends by the third movie. Creed had multiple nicknames, including most prominently "The Master of Disaster". Others include "The King of Sting", "The Dancing Destroyer", "The Prince of Punch", and "The Count of Monte Fisto". A 2013 poll of former heavyweight champions and boxing writers, including former WBA heavyweight star James "Bonecrusher" Smith, ranked Creed as the second-best boxer in the Rocky series. All of Apollo's championship fights were scheduled for the 15-round distance. Championship fights did not convert from 15 rounds to 12 rounds until 1982 (WBC), and 1988 (WBA and IBF.)
Talia Shire (/ˈtæliːə ˈʃaɪər/; born April 25, 1946) is an American actress most known for her roles as Connie Corleone in The Godfather films and Adrian Balboa in the Rocky series. For her work in The Godfather Part II and Rocky, Shire has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively.
Shire was born Talia Rose Coppola in Lake Success, New York, the daughter of Italia (née Pennino; 1912-2004) and arranger/composer Carmine Coppola (1910-1991). Her parents were both of Italian descent. Talia is the sister of director and producer Francis Ford Coppola and academic August Coppola, the aunt of actor Nicolas Cage and director Sofia Coppola, and the niece of composer and conductor Anton Coppola. She has five children. Her son Matthew Orlando Shire is the child of her first marriage to composer David Shire. Her other sons, actors/musicians Jason and Robert, are from her second marriage, to the late film producer Jack Schwartzman. She also has two stepchildren by her second marriage, Schwartzman's first marriage.
