Years after Colonel Christopher Blair (Mark Hamill; Star Wars, Batman: The Animated Series) single-handedly ended the deadly war with the Kilrathi, a new enemy emerges from far cross the stars. Now, it is the duty of the TCS Midway and her crew to stop these deadly aliens before it's too late. This space combat adventure focuses on 2nd Lieutenant Lance Casey; the son of a legendary ace pilot and new recruit into the Confederation Space Force. Alongside veteran pilots Maniac (Thomas F. Wilson; Back to the Future) and Hawk (Chris Mulkey, Rambo: First Blood, The Purge) and his fellow new recruits, Casey will face a terrifying new enemy with ancient origins. Co-starring Peter Jason (They Live, HBO's Deadwood), Jeremy Roberts (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) and adult actress Ginger Lynn Allen.
NOTES:
-It's far from perfect. Over-all. Video, audio, editing. Expect warts.
-It's fake HD. But in my experience youtube doesn't like SD stuff, and drops the bitrate so uploading an upconverted video results in better quality.
-The video is from the DVD vobs released a few years ago, but those were non-anamorphic so I had to resize all of the FMV.
-There was some kind of graphics glitch on my game...turning off lens flares kind of minimized it, but there are still weird lines around certain objects (pretend they are old school matte boxes!) and the moving stars appear in front of objects.
-Some plot points don't seem to really be covered very well in the game itself. Like the Tiamat dreadnought. I never found any kind of cutscene, briefing or VDU comm that introduces it to the cast. There are a few other things like this, such as Blair insisting to fly and then not really doing so until the end.
-Some of the briefings do not have the computer voice and instead I left the text up longer to give time to read it. The reason for this is some of the time the damned game wouldn't play the sound files, as far as I know there is no way to extract the audio from the game files
-I suck at videogames, so there is some sloppy flying during the game footage
-The in-game HUD is SOOOO not 16x9 friendly, so it's stretched a bit and window-boxed. It won't fill your screen
-Some shots of the Midway have fighters crashing into the ship. It's not my fault, it's bad AI. I achieved the shots by setting my fighter up and afterburning while using rear view and my wingmen decided they ought to follow me...even if it meant going through the ship's hull.
-If you get annoyed at wingmen saying the same thing over and over try playing rhe game. I know you can shut them up, but comms chatter adds to drama
-I only used one non-George Oldziey song in the entire thing, because German metal doesn't exactly fit
-The sync seems to be a bit off for part 2, Rendering took 11 hours and uploading took about 6, so I am not in a hurry to re-do it.
-Working on getting a file of the complete movie uploaded to wcnews.com, the sync on that file is fine since it's a different render.

Taking a look back at the 1990 space combat game that redefined the genre, Wing Commander! Getting it to run correctly may be a tough nut to crack, but it's worth it to play this Origin classic.

SNES Port of Wing Commander originally released on the pc.
I longplayed The Secret Missions first so most of the issues are in this version too. The ai is dumb as dirt and missiles dont do any significant damage in this version so there is very little to hurt the player in this version of the game. The game engine only allows 1 enemy to be in focus at a time so you never get shot at by multiple ships. A massive flaw in the game though is when the ships dont want to come into focus, no amount of shooting will be able to hit them. The frame rate is very erratic which makes it hard to aim and often overshoot the target. Added with the very low fire rate makes the stronger weapons useless. Far easier to stick with slightly weaker lasers and land more shots. Quite often I have to shut the engines off just so that enemies would approach me and not slam into me.
Unlike with the secret missions, you still have to tell the wingman when to break and attack. Unlike all other versions, you have to do this whenever you encounter a new enemy wave which gets annoying. Most of the game has survived the porting process, but the cutscenes have been removed and replaced with a static screen. These are quite an important part of enjoying Wing Commander seeing the results of your mission progression and a shame to see them missing here.
Some notable game bugs include not showing when you have recieved medals(stars) of the same type. In other game versions they stack, but not here. The game doesnt seem to remember that you have killed the kilrathi aces and brings them up more than a few times later in the dialogue. When communicating with the aces in space they always seem to have the same name. The killboard put me at the bottom when I should be at the top. There is also no cockpit damage.

Wing Commander Secret Missions 1 Expansion pack - MS-Dos version.
The difficulty of this expansion pack is so insane, it could destroy any love you have for the wing commander franchise.
The odds are stacked significantly against you every mission, the game becomes a grind and I just endup hitting minimum requiments to pass the mission rather then worry about kill score. quite often you would be put into a crappy fighter so not designed to take on the mission given. I got so fed up towards the end of the game after many retries, nothing worse then going after the final fighter and the wingman decides to colide with the claw and destroy em both, every time!). So ive cheated the last few levels to get it done. Was either this or delete the footage and move on. Its seeing the story that matters right ?
Technical:
Dosbox 0.74 was uses to play and record this game. The Soundblaster emulation can appear buggy at times. 6000 cycles was set to try and make game managable, but game is still too slow and too fast at times. The inbuilt capture codec created akeyframe every 300 frames. This is a nightmare when it comes to editing without re-encoding source material. Rightly or wrongly, it also recorded at 70fps.

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is a mix of interactive movie and space sim. The game has a dynamic mission tree, which means the player's behaviour will determine the next mission. The videos feature real actors, like Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson, John Rhys-Davies and Malcolm McDowell. Before the start of each mission, the space craft can be equipped with different weapons. Sometimes the mission objectives change during flight, and the player has to make decisions what he wants to do next, e.g. help out his friend or destroy an enemy fighter.

Wing
A wing is a type of fin with a surface that produces aerodynamic forces facilitating movement through air and other gases, or water and other liquids. As such, wings have an airfoil shape, a streamlined cross-sectional shape producing lift.
The word "wing" from the Old Norse vængr for many centuries referred mainly to the foremost limbs of birds (in addition to the architectural aisle.) But in recent centuries the word's meaning has extended to include lift producing appendages of insects, bats, pterosaurs, boomerangs, some sail boats and aircraft, or the inverted airfoil on a race car that generates a downward force to increase traction.

Commander
Commander (French: Commandeur) is a common naval and air force officer rank. Commander is also used as a rank or title in other formal organisations, including several police forces. The literal meaning is he who commands, parallel to Commandant. In most senses, the German equivalent is Kommandeur.
Commander is also a generic term for an officer commanding any armed forces unit, for example "platoon commander", "brigade commander" and "squadron commander". In the police, terms such as "borough commander" and "incident commander" are used.
Commander as a naval and air force rank
Commander is a rank used in navies but is very rarely used as a rank in armies (except in special forces where it designates the team leader). The title (originally "master and commander") originated in the 18th century to describe naval officers who commanded ships of war too large to be commanded by a Lieutenant but too small to warrant the assignment of a post-captain and (before about 1770) a sailing-master; the commanding officer served as his own Master. In practice, these were usually unrated sloops-of-war of no more than 20 guns. The Royal Navy shortened "master and commander" to "commander" in 1794; however, the term "master and commander" remained (unofficially) in common parlance for several years. The equivalent American rank master commandant remained in use until changed to commander in 1838. A corresponding rank in some navies is frigate captain. Christopher Blair
Christopher "Maverick" Blair is a fictional character in the science fiction franchise Wing Commander, first appearing in the video game Wing Commander in 1990, although he was only given a canonical name years later. He is a protagonist player character throughout much of the Wing Commander game series and also appears in several Wing Commander novels, notably the novelizations of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom, and in the film Wing Commander.
In Wing Commander III, Wing Commander IV, Wing Commander: Prophecy and animated television series Wing Commander Academy, Blair was played and voiced by veteran actor and Star Wars legend Mark Hamill. Blair was one of the best received characters in PC gaming during the 1990s.
Appearances
Blair has no official name for the first two installments of the series; the player is allowed to personalize the character's name and call sign. In Ultimate Strategy Guide for Wing Commander I & II, the character is named Carl T. LaFong, nicknamed "Prankster" (Carl T. LaFong become a separate character in Star*Soldier the manual for Wing Commander Arena). In Super Wing Commander (a remake of the first game made for Macintosh and 3DO), the character is named Jason Armstrong (Jason Armstrong becomes a separate character in Star*Soldier the manual for Wing Commander Arena), and in the Sega Mega-CD version of Wing Commander, he does not have a name, only a call sign, "Hotshot". Origin Systems' in-house "bible" referred to him as "Bluehair", and when the full motion video cut scenes in Wing Commander III required the character be given a name, this tag was shortened to "Blair". "Christopher" is the first name of series creator Chris Roberts.

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is a mix of interactive movie and space sim. The game has a dynamic mission tree, which means the player's behaviour will determine the next mission. Wing Commander: Prophecy - The Movie (part 1/2)
Years after Colonel Christopher Blair (Mark Hamill; Star Wars, Batman: The Animated Series) single-handedly ended the deadly war with the Kilrathi, a new enemy emerges from far cross the stars. The ai is dumb as dirt and missiles dont do any significant damage in this version so there is very little to hurt the player in this version of the game. The game engine only allows 1 enemy to be in focus at a time so you never get shot at by multiple ships. A massive flaw in the game though is when the ships dont want to come into focus, no amount of shooting will be able to hit them. The frame rate is very erratic which makes it hard to aim and often overshoot the target. Added with the very low fire rate makes the stronger weapons useless. Far easier to stick with slightly weaker lasers and land ...

Years after Colonel Christopher Blair (Mark Hamill; Star Wars, Batman: The Animated Series) single-handedly ended the deadly war with the Kilrathi, a new enemy emerges from far cross the stars. Now, it is the duty of the TCS Midway and her crew to stop these deadly aliens before it's too late. This space combat adventure focuses on 2nd Lieutenant Lance Casey; the son of a legendary ace pilot and new recruit into the Confederation Space Force. Alongside veteran pilots Maniac (Thomas F. Wilson; Back to the Future) and Hawk (Chris Mulkey, Rambo: First Blood, The Purge) and his fellow new recruits, Casey will face a terrifying new enemy with ancient origins. NOTES:
-It's far from perfect. Over-all. Video, audio, editing. Expect warts.
-It's fake HD. But in my experience youtube doesn't like SD stuff, and drops the bitrate so uploading an upconverted video results in better quality.
-The video is from the DVD vobs released a few years ago, but those were non-anamorphic so I had to resize all of the FMV.
-There was some kind of graphics glitch on my game...turning off lens flares kind of minimized it, but there are still weird lines around certain objects (pretend they are old school matte boxes!) and the moving stars appear in front of objects.
-Some plot points don't seem to really be covered very well in the game itself. Like the Tiamat dreadnought. I never found any kind of cutscene, briefing or VDU comm that introduces it to the cast. There are a few other things like this, such as Blair insisting to fly and then not really doing so until the end.
-Some of the briefings do not have the computer voice and instead I left the text up longer to give time to read it. The reason for this is some of the time the damned game wouldn't play the sound files, as far as I know there is no way to extract the audio from the game files
-I suck at videogames, so there is some sloppy flying during the game footage
-The in-game HUD is SOOOO not 16x9 friendly, so it's stretched a bit and window-boxed. It won't fill your screen
-Some shots of the Midway have fighters crashing into the ship. It's not my fault, it's bad AI. I achieved the shots by setting my fighter up and afterburning while using rear view and my wingmen decided they ought to follow me...even if it meant going through the ship's hull.
-If you get annoyed at wingmen saying the same thing over and over try playing rhe game. I know you can shut them up, but comms chatter adds to drama
-I only used one non-George Oldziey song in the entire thing, because German metal doesn't exactly fit
-The sync seems to be a bit off for part 2, Rendering took 11 hours and uploading took about 6, so I am not in a hurry to re-do it.
-Working on getting a file of the complete movie uploaded to wcnews.com, the sync on that file is fine since it's a different render.

I longplayed The Secret Missions first so most of the issues are in this version too. A massive flaw in the game though is when the ships dont want to come into focus, no amount of shooting will be able to hit them. The frame rate is very erratic which makes it hard to aim and often overshoot the target. Added with the very low fire rate makes the stronger weapons useless. Far easier to stick with slightly weaker lasers and land more shots. Quite often I have to shut the engines off just so that enemies would approach me and not slam into me.
Unlike with the secret missions, you still have to tell the wingman when to break and attack. Unlike all other versions, you have to do this whenever you encounter a new enemy wave which gets annoying. Most of the game has survived the porting process, but the cutscenes have been removed and replaced with a static screen. These are quite an important part of enjoying Wing Commander seeing the results of your mission progression and a shame to see them missing here.
Some notable game bugs include not showing when you have recieved medals(stars) of the same type. In other game versions they stack, but not here. The game doesnt seem to remember that you have killed the kilrathi aces and brings them up more than a few times later in the dialogue. When communicating with the aces in space they always seem to have the same name. The killboard put me at the bottom when I should be at the top. There is also no cockpit damage.

Technical:
Dosbox 0.74 was uses to play and record this game. The Soundblaster emulation can appear buggy at times. 6000 cycles was set to try and make game managable, but game is still too slow and too fast at times. The inbuilt capture codec created akeyframe every 300 frames. This is a nightmare when it comes to editing without re-encoding source material. Rightly or wrongly, it also recorded at 70fps.

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is a mix of interactive movie and space sim. The game has a dynamic mission tree, which means the player's behaviour will determine the next mission. The videos feature real actors, like Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson, John Rhys-Davies and Malcolm McDowell. Before the start of each mission, the space craft can be equipped with different weapons. Sometimes the mission objectives change during flight, and the player has to make decisions what he wants to do next, e.g. help out his friend or destroy an enemy fighter.

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is a mix of interactive movie and space sim. The game has a dynamic mission tree, which means the player's behaviour will determine the next mission. The videos feature real actors, like Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson, John Rhys-Davies and Malcolm McDowell. Before the start of each mission, the space craft can be equipped with different weapons. Sometimes the mission objectives change during flight, and the player has to make decisions what he wants to do next, e.g. help out his friend or destroy an enemy fighter.

http://www.longplays.org Played by: Mad-Matt SNES Port of Wing Commander originally released on the pc. I longplayed The Secret Missions first so most of the issues are in this version too. The ai is dumb as dirt and missiles dont do any significant damage in this version so there is very little to hurt the player in this version of the game. The game engine only allows 1 enemy to be in focus at a time so you never get shot at by multiple ships. A massive flaw in the game though is when the ships dont want to come into focus, no amount of shooting will be able to hit them. The frame rate is very erratic which makes it hard to aim and often overshoot the target. Added with the very low fire rate makes the stronger weapons useless. Far easier to stick with slightly weaker lasers and land ...

The difficulty of this expansion pack is so insane, it could destroy any love you have for the wing commander franchise. The odds are stacked significantly against you every mission, the game becomes a grind and I just endup hitting minimum requiments to pass the mission rather then worry about kill score. quite often you would be put into a crappy fighter so not designed to take on the mission given. I got so fed up towards the end of the game after many retries, nothing worse then going after the final fighter and the wingman decides to colide with the claw and destroy em both, every time!). Years after Colonel Christopher Blair (Mark Hamill; Star Wars, Batman: The Animated Series) single-handedly ended the deadly war with the Kilrathi, a new enemy emerges from far cross the stars. Now, it is the duty of the TCS Midway and her crew to stop these deadly aliens before it's too late. This space combat adventure focuses on 2nd Lieutenant Lance Casey; the son of a legendary ace pilot and new recruit into the Confederation Space Force. Alongside veteran pilots Maniac (Thomas F. Wilson; Back to the Future) and Hawk (Chris Mulkey, Rambo: First Blood, The Purge) and his fellow new recruits, Casey will face a terrifying new enemy with ancient origins. NOTES:
-It's far from perfect. Over-all. Video, audio, editing. Expect warts.
-It's fake HD. But in my experience youtube doesn't like SD stuff, and drops the bitrate so uploading an upconverted video results in better quality.
-The video is from the DVD vobs released a few years ago, but those were non-anamorphic so I had to resize all of the FMV.
-There was some kind of graphics glitch on my game...turning off lens flares kind of minimized it, but there are still weird lines around certain objects (pretend they are old school matte boxes!) and the moving stars appear in front of objects.
-Some plot points don't seem to really be covered very well in the game itself. Like the Tiamat dreadnought. I never found any kind of cutscene, briefing or VDU comm that introduces it to the cast. There are a few other things like this, such as Blair insisting to fly and then not really doing so until the end.
-Some of the briefings do not have the computer voice and instead I left the text up longer to give time to read it. The reason for this is some of the time the damned game wouldn't play the sound files, as far as I know there is no way to extract the audio from the game files
-I suck at videogames, so there is some sloppy flying during the game footage
-The in-game HUD is SOOOO not 16x9 friendly, so it's stretched a bit and window-boxed. It won't fill your screen
-Some shots of the Midway have fighters crashing into the ship. It's not my fault, it's bad AI. I achieved the shots by setting my fighter up and afterburning while using rear view and my wingmen decided they ought to follow me...even if it meant going through the ship's hull.
-If you get annoyed at wingmen saying the same thing over and over try playing rhe game. I know you can shut them up, but comms chatter adds to drama
-I only used one non-George Oldziey song in the entire thing, because German metal doesn't exactly fit
-The sync seems to be a bit off for part 2, Rendering took 11 hours and uploading took about 6, so I am not in a hurry to re-do it.
-Working on getting a file of the complete movie uploaded to wcnews.com, the sync on that file is fine since it's a different render.

I longplayed The Secret Missions first so most of the issues are in this version too. The ai is dumb as dirt and missiles dont do any significant damage in this version so there is very little to hurt the player in this version of the game. The game engine only allows 1 enemy to be in focus at a time so you never get shot at by multiple ships. A massive flaw in the game though is when the ships dont want to come into focus, no amount of shooting will be able to hit them. The frame rate is very erratic which makes it hard to aim and often overshoot the target. Added with the very low fire rate makes the stronger weapons useless. Far easier to stick with slightly weaker lasers and land more shots. Quite often I have to shut the engines off just so that enemies would approach me and not slam into me.
Unlike with the secret missions, you still have to tell the wingman when to break and attack. Unlike all other versions, you have to do this whenever you encounter a new enemy wave which gets annoying. Most of the game has survived the porting process, but the cutscenes have been removed and replaced with a static screen. These are quite an important part of enjoying Wing Commander seeing the results of your mission progression and a shame to see them missing here.
Some notable game bugs include not showing when you have recieved medals(stars) of the same type. In other game versions they stack, but not here. The game doesnt seem to remember that you have killed the kilrathi aces and brings them up more than a few times later in the dialogue. When communicating with the aces in space they always seem to have the same name. The killboard put me at the bottom when I should be at the top. There is also no cockpit damage.

Dosbox 0.74 was uses to play and record this game. Wing Commander Secret Missions 1 Expansion pack - MS-Dos version.
The difficulty of this expansion pack is so insane, it could destroy any love you have for the wing commander franchise.
The odds are stacked significantly against you every mission, the game becomes a grind and I just endup hitting minimum requiments to pass the mission rather then worry about kill score. quite often you would be put into a crappy fighter so not designed to take on the mission given. I got so fed up towards the end of the game after many retries, nothing worse then going after the final fighter and the wingman decides to colide with the claw and destroy em both, every time!). So ive cheated the last few levels to get it done. Was either this or delete the footage and move on. Its seeing the story that matters right ?

The videos feature real actors, like Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson, John Rhys-Davies and Malcolm McDowell. Before the start of each mission, the space craft can be equipped with different weapons. Sometimes the mission objectives change during flight, and the player has to make decisions what he wants to do next, e.g. help out his friend or destroy an enemy fighter.
