Sydney weather: Temperature to drop to single digits as winter arrives

Sydney residents are about to shiver through the coldest period of the year with minimum temperatures set to plummet to single digits for the next four days.

It will be a chilly start to Friday with a minimum of 9 degrees on the coast, 6 degrees in Penrith and 4 degrees in Campbelltown, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The weekend will be even colder with a minimum of 7 degrees in Sydney on Saturday and Sunday.

Penrith residents can expect a cold start to the day on Saturday with a minimum of 4 degrees, before dropping to 3 degrees on Sunday.

Campbelltown will be the coldest part of the greater Sydney region over the weekend, with a minimum of 1 degree on Sunday and 2 degrees on Saturday.

Tom Hough, a meteorologist with Weatherzone, said winter had well and truly arrived after a mild few weeks.

"It was a pretty cold start this morning but it will be even chillier over the next few days," he said.

"The minimum temperature will be 9 degrees on Friday before dropping to a minimum of 7 degrees over the weekend.

"It's looking like the coldest days for Sydney so far this year but it will warm up a little bit early next week."

The cold weather is good news for people heading off to the ski fields for the school holidays, with a cold spell hitting inland areas.

"They should wrap up warmly because it will be very chilly," he said.

"Inland NSW has been extremely cold over the past few days.

"It was minus 4 degrees in Canberra this morning and it will remain very cold for the next few days."
