A horrific crash in the state's north involving a road train has left two people dead.

The incident occurred around 3pm Friday on the Great Northern Highway, approximately 150 kilometres south of South Hedland.

The highway connects Newman and Port Hedland.

The crash involved a road train, a four-wheel-drive towing a caravan, and a third vehicle.

The 4WD and road train were travelling south while the third vehicle was travelling north.

A man, aged 46, and a woman, 45, travelling in the 4WD died in the crash. Two teenage children, related to the couple, were also in the vehicle but survived and were taken to hospital as a precaution.
