At the core of Co-PLAN’s activity is the work with people and institutions, to foster tangible social transformation and positive change on the ground by inducing change-driving knowledge in our society for smart management of our habitat. In project, City for citizens, citizens for city, where they act as partners to our institute, they decided to transform a vacant public space next to the block of flats to colorful playground for kids. - - - (SK) Institute for Habitat Development (Co-PLAN) je nezisková organizácia v albánskej Tirane, ktorá sa už od roku 1995 podieľa na udržateľnom rozvoji presadzovaním správnych verejných politík v oblasti územného plánovania a budovaním občianskej spoločnosti a miestnych komunít a ich možností zúčastňovať sa na rozhodovacích procesoch. It was completed in 1993. In 1995, it was a finalist in the Benedictus Awards, described by the jury as "a remarkable anti-structure … a symbolic use of technology … a piece of sculpture. It was meant as an object but it is an object to transmit light." The Inverted Pyramid figures prominently on the concluding pages of Dan Brown's international bestseller The Da Vinci Code. The protagonist of his novel, Robert Langdon, reads esoteric symbolism into the two pyramids: The Inverted Pyramid is perceived as a Chalice, a feminine symbol, whereas the stone pyramid below is interpreted as a Blade, a masculine symbol: the whole structure could thus express the union of the genders. Moreover, Brown's protagonist concludes that the tiny stone pyramid is actually only the apex of a larger pyramid (possibly the same size as the inverted pyramid above), embedded in the floor as a secret chamber. In Raphaël Aurillac's work Le guide du Paris maçonnique, the author declares that the Louvre used to be a Masonic temple. To Aurillac, the various glass pyramids constructed in recent decades include Masonic symbolism. Aurillac sees the downward-pointing pyramid as expressing the Rosicrucian motto V.I.T.R.I.O.L. (Visita Interiorem Terrae Rectificandoque / Invenies Occultum Lapidem, "Visit the interior of the earth and… you will find the secret stone"). At age fourteen, Faber’s dad bought him a drum kit which Faber promised to practice on every day. “Coming from a family of seven kids, this was a huge deal,” he remembers, “seeing as how my dad could barely even afford to feed us.” Faber may not have kept his promise, but that’s because he put down the drum sticks to become frontman and founding member of Faber Drive, one of Canada’s hottest young bands. After beating out more than 500 other artists from across Canada to take first place in a radio competition, Faber Drive started opening for notable acts such as Nickelback, Simple Plan and Hedley. With the release of their pop-punk infused debut album Seven Second Surgery, Faber Drive hit #1 on Much Music, saw 3 top 10 radio singles and was nominated for the Juno award for Best New Artist in 2008. However, the Faber Drive that appears on its sophomore album can'T keEp A SecrEt is a band that has progressed beyond the Juno nominees of 2008. Where Seven Second Surgery laid the ground work for the Vancouver-based band’s career, can'T keEp A SecrEt now builds and evolves, deftly bringing bright colors, edgy tones, and more emotion into the fold and crossing the borders between Faber Drive’s punk rock roots into electro-pop mixed with epic balladry. “We wanted to take a risk with can’T keEp A SecrEt and move forward without forgetting our original sound or our dedicated fans,” explains bassist Krikit. “We wanted to write songs that would stand the test of time, and we wanted to have more control and coproduce with several different producers.” To that end, can'T keEp A SecrEt is a who’s who of the Vancouver music biz A-game, including Dave Genn (Matthew Good/Hedley/Marianas Trench), Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Marilyn Manson/Nine Inch Nails), Brian Howes (Daughtry/Hinder/Hedley) and the insurgent likes of Josh Ramsay (Marianas Trench), Colin “Crocker” Friesen, and Jeff Johnson. If you look at all the greats, its all about working together; Lennon and McCartney, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Bono and the Edge.” Still Faber Drive is guilty of undue modesty. can'T keEp A SecrEt is bonded by the coherent force of a band ambitious enough to challenge itself and possessing the confidence and poise to actually pull it off. The first single “G-Get Up and Dance” was written and produced by the band in Faber’s barn, with Rave brought in as a coproducer and mixer in the final stages, helping launch the song to a platinum-selling iTunes grand slam in only 2 months. On the opposite pole, album closer “By Your Side” is both beautiful and melancholy, beneath a vocal performance from Faber that hits you like a punch in the gut. “It’s a little hard for me to listen to sometimes,” reveals the singer, who penned the song late one night while thinking about his father, who passed in 1995 of stomach and lung cancer. “It’s basically about how someone important in your life will always be a part of you, even once they’ve left this world.” Producer Dave Genn heard the demo and immediately fell in love, while also manning the boards for two somewhat more rambunctious numbers: “Never Coming Down,” barreling into view on a thumping backbeat and keening U2 guitars, with a chorus of amped-up whoa-ohs. “When you’re young, you don’t really have a place to go,” Krikit comments on the lyrical content, “You get your license and you end up driving around all the time. That’s your freedom and that’s your place to go.” And “Our Last Goodbye”, the perfect pop punk throwdown, which cites the influence of old favorites like touring partners MxPx, and Green Day -- who also happen to turn up in album opener “The Payoff”, referenced alongside Oprah, Queen, and Rick James. Faber is quick to admit that FD gets a little “goofy behind closed doors”, and “The Payoff” somehow walks the line between tongue-in-cheek and triumph, celebrating the band’s success with an irresistible sing along pop-rock anthem. Faber was also in a nostalgic mood when he hacked out the song “Forever,” composing the number as he pulled the graveyard shift on a cross Canada tour with Simple Plan. When band decided to record two songs with Josh Ramsay, the resident Marianas Trench songwriter they chose “Forever,” and the second single from can’T keEp A SecrEt, “Give Him Up.” “Give Him Up” is doused in super-fat bass synths and galloping percussion and takes some lyrical direction from American Hi-Fi’s “Flavor of the Week.” “Usually what happens is you’re writing a song and it reminds you of another song, so you draw on that for inspiration,” Faber admits. If graphic designer Stephen Doyle has his way, words would be three-dimensional objects. In his “perfect playground” of creating ads, words would get up off the page and “literally cast a shadow”. “They would be so tactile that they could enter the world along with us and have a life,” says the creative director and founder of New York-based design studio Doyle Partners. Doyle lives in a world where “humanity rules, ideas cast shadows and colour talks”. He works by a credo of “magic, nonsense and macramé”: magic for campaigns that go beyond the brief and defy expectation, nonsense for the ability to step away from the realm of logic and macramé for the tactility of ideas become real. He’s worked on illustrations, sculptures, environmental graphics, identity programmes, packaging, magazines, catalogues, books, videos and products over the long course of his career. He was awarded the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Communication in 2010 and this year was presented with the AIGA Medal at its centennial gala. Doyle was commissioned by the Wildlife Conservation Society to create the signage for the New York City Aquarium. He worked in collaboration with environmental artist Ned Kahn on a giant installation covering the building’s entire facade. The sign used small aluminium tiles that move with the wind and reflect the sun to create a water-like effect. Dispensing with the need for electrification, it embodies the client’s values of protecting the environment. In 1995, he was tasked by the New York State Division for Women to mount a public installation celebrating the 75th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. Faced with a limited budget, he created an impactful vinyl sign pasted in eight-foot letters on the floor of Grand Central terminal. It was difficult to read the entire sign but because the statement ended in the word “sex” it grabbed commuters’ attention. “Just because of the scale and the context, we got people to read part of the Constitution of the United States without them even knowing it,” he says. “That’s the kind of seduction that I live for.” In his most recent projects, he has been experimenting with taking graphic design into the physical realm with environmental graphics. “This is wonderful for me because it brings together graphic design, architecture, sculpture and very often, the public,” Doyle says. When creating something new he asks himself, “How can I infiltrate the space with a story instead of smacking another sign in the world, another visual signal?” How do we work viscerally and coat the surfaces that are there so that an idea or a story or a narrative might be a beacon to an audience, tap them on the shoulder and say ‘Yoo-hoo!’? He fondly describes his studio as a “mess”, but it is all for the sake of channelling creative energy and original thought. “The lovely thing about the studio is the hybridisation of these stories,” he says. “We try to be authentic and passionate and bring to all of our projects a little bit of humanity and a little bit of wit.”

Notes on Cosmia “About 25% of LGBT people suffer through violent or threatening relationships with partners or ex-partners which is about the same rates as in as domestic abuse against heterosexual women”. http://www.endthefear.co.uk/information/help-and-advice/same-sex-domestic-abuse/ I did not make this film with either the LGBT people or heterosexual women in mind. It was made from the perspective that this happens and is purposefully produced to be ambiguous as to who the perpetrator is. It is narrowed to some possibilities though, and that is heterosexual men, lesbian, bisexual (woman/man) or transsexual. It brings attention to what is happening within personal lives and how the character uses the tool of cosmetics to cover this up. This is important here as ‘covering up’ has many strands. End the fear states on their website linked above, “It can be hard for LGBT domestic violence victims to seek help because they may not want to disclose their sexuality to police or other organisations. Because of the general homophobia and transphobia in modern societies, LGBT victims of partner violence may be concerned about giving gay and lesbian relationships a ‘bad name’ and may refuse to speak up about the abuse they’re suffering” Likewise, it would also be hard for heterosexual woman to disclose this abuse/violence because they may be also outed as “She may feel ashamed about what has happened or believe that it is her fault” or “She may be isolated from family or friends or be prevented from leaving the home or reaching out for help”. Covering up then, on the external, in order to continue everyday life, is merely scratching surface of what each individual will have to cover up on the inside. I have used various tools/objects within the film to reflect the interiority of the character which helps to support/reveal the narrative further. The use of mirrors for instance is used from the Deleuzian hypotheses (Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995), French philosopher), the time image. The time image is a representation of the actual and the virtual. For example, if I am holding a cup of coffee in my hand it is the actual, but if I am thinking about a past or future cup of coffee it is the virtual. Using the mirror on two occasions within the film is a representation of what the character is actually doing and the possibilities of what she is thinking. What she is thinking about is up for interpretation. The Deleuzian crystal image is also present in the narrative albeit abstract. A crystal as we know has many sides and reflections. The crystal can hold the space in the environment (the metaphorical crystal) and reflect back to us the multiplicity of life, mirroring our actions and processes. The character with or without the mirror holds this space for us all. She is the elephant in the room. According to Women’s Aid UK, “on average, two women a week are killed by a violent partner or ex-partner. This constitutes nearly 40% of all female homicide victims”. (Povey, (ed.), 2005; Home Office, 1999; Department of Health, 2005.) The hotel room would be an allegory for something is broken, for example, the spousal home has being disrupted. It is symbolic of a transit to something other than. She is alone though, which would be a particularly stressful time for her. This is emphasised at the end with the stairs and this is an allusion to Film Noir and how the stairs are used as a liminal space (a space of in-between-ness) but also as a place of community communication. The stairs are empty of community though and again an allegory to the aloneness. The scene where she lies on the bed on her side is an allusion to the opening scene of Lost in Translation when Scarlet Johansson is lying on the bed in her underwear. The critical theory (Laura Mulvey’s hypotheses) on this scene is that Sofia Coppola was disrupting the male gaze due to the length of the shot. It is possible here, that the male and female gaze become subjectified as opposed to the erotic objectification we are possibly familiar with. The music, This Bitter Earth/ On The Nature of Daylight by Dinah Washington and Max Richter is a protagonist on its own. The music reflects the position that the character is in, one that this earth is indeed bitter. However, Dinah Washington redeems the earth in the lyrics, and maybe also for the character, when she says, “But while a voice Within me cries I'm sure someone may answer my call And this bitter earth ooooooh May not be ohhhh, so bitter after all” It reflects the survival aspect of our humanness and I will end this with a Haiku which also echoes this human need: Dropping stone after stone into the lake – I keep Reappearing This film is for non-commercial purposes.
