When I uploaded the video for the first time it was the day (May 9, 2009) when Stephen was crossing another border for no return, and I didn't know about it then. He also had some tiny scenes in the movie, even with the dancing scene here, but I didn't catch him for the vid...

You won't really notice him in the vid; he is just sitting down to the fiddle player's right playing the guitar... If I had known... I would have put in the 2 seconds with him and the guitar and a dusty face that were near the end of the dance scene in the movie.

I was deeply impressed by the movie "Heaven's Gate" (1980). Bought the DVD and watched it despite of the many bad reviews that it had received from American critics... To me it's hard stuff, but kind of a masterpiece, and the subject is interesting, I had never heard of that war before.

Everyone thinks that Arlo Guthrie wrote the City of New Orleans, but actually it was written by Steve Goodman, a Chicago-area, folk guitarist-composer, who created this wonderful song in 1970, two years before Arlo Guthrie turned it into a mainstream hit, the only mainstream hit that Guthrie ever had
When I call this song genius, I'm speaking of the combination of two aspects
a. the song, as written by Steve Goodman
b. the performance of this song, by Arlo Guthrie
The combination makes it a great work, for me and not a bad achievement for a man who was just 5'2" as Goodman was or a performer whose father rose to great fame and his foot was expected to fit his father's footprints
My joke about Jews being rich came from my association with Jewish comedians while living in Chicago
One young lady wrote that joke, not me
She said, "I came from a middle class Jewish family........we were very rich!!"
I liked that joke and remembered it, all these years, but I forgot that young lady's name, hundreds of years ago so I can't give her credit
She probably died decades ago, anyway! (Joking!)
All Chicago comedians of the late 1970s know that I didn't write that joke and many of them know who did, so if you're out there, please tell me so I can give credit where it's due

1. He looks out the window and sees towns without any names and his own life is about the same, at that time, so he makes one giant effort to do something meaningful
2. In his view from his seat on the train, he sees cars rusting and views it as a 'graveyard of rusting automobiles', a sad way of looking at this phenomenon
3. With few passengers on the Illinois Central and a declining passenger rail industry, Goodman writes about 15 cars and 15 restless riders, 3 conductors and just 25 sacks of mail
4. In the last verse, he depicts the ride as a 'bad dream', like being diagnosed with leukemia, so young in life
Because Steve Goodman was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, some of his ashes were spread at Wrigley Field, 1060 W. Addison, Chicago, IL, but not at home plate, as most believe

Steve also died 4 days before the Cubs clinched the division in '84. He was slated to sing the National Anthem at game #1 so Jimmy Buffet sang it and dedicated it for him.

Songwriter (film)
Songwriter is a 1984 film, directed by Alan Rudolph.
The film concerns Doc Jenkins, (Willie Nelson), a country and western composer and the devious tricks he employs to extricate himself from his legal entanglement with a Nashville gangster entrepreneur who takes all the profits from his songs. Fed up with life touring, and making no money from recordings of his music, Doc has turned to managing the career of his old singing partner Blackie Buck, (Kris Kristofferson). Doc takes a further client - a woman singer, Gilda, (Lesley Ann Warren). He wants to get back with his ex-wife Honey (Melinda Dillon). He wants solid ground beneath his feet again.
The film is a satirical comedy about an artist seeking his freedom. The material is loosely based on Willie Nelson's own life, and legend, and finances. His song "Night Life", for example, which he sold in 1961 for $150, went on to be recorded by over 70 artists and sold more than 30 million copies.
The film is reviewed, favourably, by the critic Pauline Kael in her collection of movie reviews, Hooked. "Playing a vain, laid-back sensualist, the silver bearded Kristofferson has a smiling glow; he has never been more at ease; Rip Torn is the pictures insurance against gentility. Everything he says sounds mean and dirty, and even when you can't understand his snarled out words he makes you laugh. Rhonda Dotson has something of Teri Garr's manic alertness and dippiness, too, but in a softer form. She's a romantic comedienne with awesome poise. Richard C. Sarafian has a whomping comic menace. Lesley Ann Warren's Gilda is spectacular. When we first see Gilda, she's a singer with no belief in herself and no class; she's an incredibly beautiful girl in a red dress [but] when Doc grooms her to go out as the opening act for Blackie, she begins to learn something about taste and musicianship, and her voice flowers. Besides being one of the great beauties of the screen, Warren can sing."

I was deeply impressed by the movie "Heaven's Gate" (1980). Bought the DVD and watched it despite of the many bad reviews that it had received from American critics... To me it's hard stuff, but kind of a masterpiece, and the subject is interesting, I had never heard of that war before.

Everyone thinks that Arlo Guthrie wrote the City of New Orleans, but actually it was written by Steve Goodman, a Chicago-area, folk guitarist-composer, who created this wonderful song in 1970, two years before Arlo Guthrie turned it into a mainstream hit, the only mainstream hit that Guthrie ever had
When I call this song genius, I'm speaking of the combination of two aspects
a. the song, as written by Steve Goodman
b. the performance of this song, by Arlo Guthrie
The combination makes it a great work, for me and not a bad achievement for a man who was just 5'2" as Goodman was or a performer whose father rose to great fame and his foot was expected to fit his father's footprints
My joke about Jews being rich came from my association with Jewish comedians while living in Chicago
One young lady wrote that joke, not me
She said, "I came from a middle class Jewish family........we were very rich!!"
I liked that joke and remembered it, all these years, but I forgot that young lady's name, hundreds of years ago so I can't give her credit
She probably died decades ago, anyway! (Joking!)
All Chicago comedians of the late 1970s know that I didn't write that joke and many of them know who did, so if you're out there, please tell me so I can give credit where it's due
Goodman learned in 1970 that he had leukemia and was dying and it is likely that he wrote this song, shortly after learning this heartbreaking news
1. He looks out the window and sees towns without any names and his own life is about the same, at that time, so he makes one giant effort to do something meaningful
2. In his view from his seat on the train, he sees cars rusting and views it as a 'graveyard of rusting automobiles', a sad way of looking at this phenomenon
3. With few passengers on the Illinois Central and a declining passenger rail industry, Goodman writes about 15 cars and 15 restless riders, 3 conductors and just 25 sacks of mail
4. In the last verse, he depicts the ride as a 'bad dream', like being diagnosed with leukemia, so young in life
Because Steve Goodman was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, some of his ashes were spread at Wrigley Field, 1060 W. Addison, Chicago, IL, but not at home plate, as most believe

Nancy was still asleep after an hour and I went down to the club car and ended up playing cards with a couple of old men
Everything in the song actually happened."
His ashes were partly scattered in Wrigley Field because it was a "dying cubs fan last wish," according to the lyrics of one of his songs

Steve also died 4 days before the Cubs clinched the division in '84. He was slated to sing the National Anthem at game #1 so Jimmy Buffet sang it and dedicated it for him.
He also wrote A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request:
