“When we have certain kinds of attacks in this country, there is terrorism world-wide, it’s a global conspiracy and they are coming to get us. But when we have other kinds of terrorism in this country . . . don’t talk about it.
Cenk Uygur (The Young Turks) breaks it down. Should our government pay more attention to domestic terrorism? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
This month, the headlines were about a Muslim man in Boston who was accused of threatening police officers with a knife. Last month, two Muslims attacked an anti-Islamic conference in Garland, Tex. The month before, a Muslim man was charged with plotting to drive a truck bomb onto a military installation in Kansas. If you keep up with the news, you know that a small but steady stream of American Muslims, radicalized by overseas extremists, are engaging in violence here in the United States.
But headlines can mislead. The main terrorist threat in the United States is not from violent Muslim extremists, but from right-wing extremists. Just ask the police.
In a survey we conducted with the Police Executive Research Forum last year of 382 law enforcement agencies, 74 percent reported anti-government extremism as one of the top three terrorist threats in their jurisdiction; 39 percent listed extremism connected with Al Qaeda or like-minded terrorist organizations. And only 3 percent identified the threat from Muslim extremists as severe, compared with 7 percent for anti-government and other forms of extremism.”
The Young Turks: “Right-wing Terrorists Kill More Americans Than Islamic Extremists”
@MadameRamotswe Something has got to be done about these domestic terrorists!
@CastonChris They are very angry young men. We have to have programs to prevent this. What is the real root of their rage.@POTUS
They are racists, whove been endoctrinated into hatred, and are allowed to do as they please, bc we the people havent put a stop to this in over 10 years.
I’m sure this meant to read, “on American soil”?
People forget, I think, that terrorists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were ‘home-grown’ right-wing anti-government extremists. That’s why there was never much said about them. If they were from or associated with some Middle-Eastern terrorist group, they’d still be talked about.
do soldiers not count as Americans now?
if we’re only talking domestically, they’re both overshadowed by the true terrorist threat: swimming pools, which have killed far more than both combined.
if not for the media’s insatiable appetite for “crises” and “breaking news,” we would rightly not hear or care one iota about what passes for “domestic terrorism” in the United States.
@girlinterruptin there are NO intellectuals in Ann Arbor.
@ClementSalviani Muslim extremism is right-wing, from a certain point of view. Same thing
No? Bin Laden’s thought on jihad drew on far left economic thought, making Al Qaeda an apparently left-wing organization.
what is the USA becoming
Yes, Betsy, we do have programs to help prevent “angry young men” from doing this, but the GOP is continually cutting funding for social programs and this is, probably, an example of a direct result of this. Reagan was the one who was so happy to cut such programs the most, and the part of GOP (Gross Old Pigs) continues to follow suit. The GOP did this.
[…] subject, a few words on this last point. Cenk Uygur of the Young Turks broadcast has pointed out an unsettling truth: since 2002, right-wing white terrorists have killed more Americans than Muslim extremists. So much […]
Their anti-government ideology is fed by the Republican Party (“Gov. is the problem.” Reagan)…(“…we want to drown the Gov. in the bathtub” Norquist) ad infinitum.
They fly the flag of treason over the slave states because they’re still fighting the Civil War. Only now it’s called the Southern Strategy.
Destroy the right wing and GOP workers of the world unite for you have nothing to lose but your chains!
