Sydney weather: Temperatures to plunge as winter closes in

102 reading now

Sydney residents are bracing for the coldest weekend in two years, with minimum temperatures set to plunge to single digits for the next four days.

It will be a chilly start to Saturday, with a minimum of 3 degrees in the city and 8 degrees on the coast, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

But residents in Sydney's west are tipped to bear the brunt of the cold weather. Penrith residents can expect a shivery start to the day on Saturday with a minimum of 1 degrees, before a slight rise to 2 degrees on Sunday morning.

Campbelltown will be the coldest part of the greater Sydney region over the weekend, with a minimum of 0 degrees expected for Saturday.

Joel Pippard, a meteorologist with Weatherzone, said this weekend's freezing temperatures would spell the end to what was a mild winter.

"A high-pressure system will dominate over the weekend," he said.

"Saturday and Sunday will be the coldest pair of mornings in two years."

"Sydney can expect still winds and clear skies over the weekend, the perfect recipe for a cold morning."

The school holidays will be off to a wet start on Monday, with the Bureau of Meteorology expecting city and coastal areas to be affected by periods of patchy rain.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Canberra will sink to a freezing -7 degrees on Saturday night, before climbing back to -4 degrees on Monday morning.
