François Rabelais (/ˌræbəˈleɪ/;French: [fʁɑ̃.swa ʁa.blɛ]; between 1483 and 1494 – 9 April 1553) was a major French Renaissance writer, physician, Renaissance humanist, monk and Greek scholar. He has historically been regarded as a writer of fantasy, satire, the grotesque, bawdy jokes and songs. His best known work is Gargantua and Pantagruel. Because of his literary power and historical importance, Western literary critics considered him one of the great writers of world literature and among the creators of modern European writing. His literary legacy is such that today, the word "Rabelaisian" has been coined as a descriptive inspired by his work and life. Merriam-Webster defines the word as describing someone or something that is "marked by gross robust humor, extravagance of caricature, or bold naturalism."
No reliable documentation of the place or date of the birth of François Rabelais has survived, and some scholars put the date as early as 1483. He was probably born in November 1494 near Chinon in the Touraine, where his father worked as a lawyer. The estate of La Devinière in Seuilly in the modern-day Indre-et-Loire, allegedly the writer's birthplace, houses a Rabelais museum.

The French Institute's 'French Passions' series, in which authors come and discuss their favourite French writers, continues with Cambridge-born Simon McBurney who came to talk about the sixteenth-century French Renaissance writer and humanist François Rabelais. Simon McBurney is an Olivier Award-winning and Tony-Award-nominated actor, writer and director. He is the founder and artistic director of the theatre company Complicite, which performs throughout the world. Among their latest productions was 'A Disappearing Number', a devised piece conceived and directed by McBurney, played at the Barbican in Autumn 2008 and toured internationally. Boyd Tonkin, Literary Editor of The Independent, chaired the talk.

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words - and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the "Great Perhaps." Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young. Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps. Looking for Alaska brilliantly chronicles the indelible impact one life can have on another. A stunning debut, it marks John Green's arrival as an important new voice in contemporary fiction.
