Yanji (Korean pronunciation: [jʌnɡil]), is the seat of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, in eastern Jilin province, People's Republic of China. Its population is approximately 400,000 of which a large section is ethnic Korean. Yanji is a busy hub of transport and trade between China and North Korea.
Yanji and its environs were largely unpopulated until the 1800s when Qing dynasty rulers of China began to encourage migration there, as an effort to stem encroaching Russian expansion.
Yanji is now part of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, which is situated in eastern Jilin. Yanji City is centrally located, surrounded by five other county-level cities and two rural counties (see map); it is the administrative seat of the prefecture.
The North Korean military detonated its second nuclear test in May 2009 close to the Chinese border, and the blast set off an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 with an epicenter only 112 mi (180 km) from Yanji. The mutual goodwill of the Chinese and Korean populations in the region was put under severe strain, and many in Yanji expressed newfound feelings of dismay and insecurity regarding their North Korean neighbors.
Jilin (Chinese: 吉林; pinyin: Jílín; postal: Kirin) is one of the three provinces of Northeast China. Jilin borders North Korea and Russia to the east, Heilongjiang to the north, Liaoning to the south, and Inner Mongolia to the west.
The name "Jilin" – literally, "Auspicious Forest" – probably originates from girin ula ᡤᡳᡵᡳᠨ ᡠᠯᠠ, a Manchu phrase meaning "along the river"; this would have been transcribed into jilin wula (t 吉林烏拉, s 吉林乌拉) in Chinese, then shortened to "Jilin".
In ancient times, Jilin was inhabited by various peoples, notably the Xianbei, Koreans, the Mohe and the Wùjí (勿吉). Korean kingdoms, including the Buyeo, Goguryeo and Balhae, were established in this area.
The region then fell successively under the domination of the Xiongnu, Xianbei state, Khitan Liao Dynasty, the Jurchen Jin Dynasty, and the Mongol Yuan Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty, much of the area was under the control of the General of Jilin, whose area of control extended to the Sea of Japan to encompass much of what is Russia's Primorsky Krai today.
Autonomous prefectures (Chinese: 自治州; pinyin: Zìzhìzhōu) are one type of autonomous areas of China, existing at the prefectural level, with either ethnic minorities forming over 50% of the population or being the historic home of significant minorities. All autonomous prefectures are mostly dominated, in population, by the Han Chinese. The official name of an autonomous prefecture includes the most dominant minority in that region, sometimes two, rarely three. For example, a Kazakh (Kazak in official naming system) prefecture may be called Kazak Zizhizhou. Like all other prefectural level divisions, autonomous prefectures are divided into county level divisions. There is one exception: Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture contains two prefectures of its own. Under the Constitution of the People's Republic of China, autonomous prefectures cannot be abolished.
Yanbian (Chinese: 延边, Chinese Korean : 연변, South Korean transliteration: 옌볜) is an Autonomous Prefecture in northeastern Jilin Province, People's Republic of China, just north of the border with North Korea. Yanbian is bordered to the north by Heilongjiang, on the west by Baishan City and Jilin City, on the south by North Hamgyong Province of North Korea, and on the east by Primorsky Krai of Russia. Yanbian is designated as an autonomous prefecture due to the large number of ethnic Koreans living in the region. The prefectural capital is Yanji, and the total area is 42,700 square kilometres (16,500 sq mi).
The Prefecture has an important Balhae archaeological site: the Ancient Tombs at Longtou Mountain, which includes the Mausoleum of Princess Jeonghyo.
The prefecture is subdivided into eight county-level divisions: six county-level cities and two counties:
The above counties and cities are divided into 642 villages (边境村/邊境村).
In the Ming Dynasty, Yanbian was governed by the Jianzhou Guard-district (建州衛), and in the late Qing Dynasty the area was divided into the Yanji (延吉廳) and Hunchun (琿春廳) subprefectures. From 1644 to the 1800s the Manchurian administrators of the Qing state attempted to separate northeast China, politically and ethnographically, into a "Manchuria" to which they could retreat in case an ethnically Han Chinese dynasty regained control over China. However, this effort failed because of the trading and agricultural opportunities available to Han Chinese migrants in the northeast region which made it profitable to evade the rules, as well as later Qing relaxation of the same rules to discourage Russian encroachment.

North Korea ( listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

This trip was awesome, even though I did not know what to expect and the cities that I have visited were very small, it was still amazing to experience this mixture of Chinese and Korean culture. I also got to see the Baekdu mountain, which in Chinese is called Changbai. The mountain looked amazing with all the snow around and it was not that cold because we previously rented special clothes. If you are planning the trip to Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture I say go for it! The atmosphere there is peaceful, people are friendly and the food is grea...

In North Korean-run restaurants in about 20 countries, multilingual and glamorous North Korean women serve drinks and food but also sing and play a variety of instruments, from electric guitars and the drums to more traditional violins. The restaurants have become a major source of foreign currency for the cash-strapped regime in Pyongyang. This video was taken at a North Korean restaurant in Yanji, on the Chinese border with North Korea, in August 2015.

Excerpt from 18 min film Yanji is Chinese territory along the border of North Korea. Koreans emigrated to Yanji during Japanese occupation through relocation policy of Japan. People in yanji still preserve Korean culture and language. The region has a close relation with the ethnographical history of modern Korea. However, most traces that Korean history related has been removed or rewritten as Chinese history. The strategy of memory representation of the film is through the relationship with the narrator of the film. The narrator was born from south Korea but grew up in U.S and forgotten her mother tongue. She read written an essay that I wrote while I was in Yanji, with her awkward Korean pronunciation. I guide her to read the text properly.

It never really mattered too much to me
That you were just too damn dull for me
All that really mattered was you were my boyfriend
And baby that's all that matters to me
~Chorus~
Let me love you down, even if it takes all night
Let me love you down, you know it's got to be so right
Remember when you drove me home from work?
I loved the way when you kissed me bye
All of your friends think I'm just too young for you
So tell them that I can do what girls their age can do
Aw babe
[Chorus] 2x
It never really mattered too much to me
That they were just too damn blind to see
As long as I can love you down baby just be my man
That's all that matters to me
[Chorus]
Let me love you down
Ooh
Let me love you down,
I know, I know I could
Love you down, down, Ooh
Love you down, down, no no no no no no no
Let me love you, I wanna love you, down
Let me love you, I wanna love you, down baby
