Aussie pop royalty Tina Arena has revealed she suffered three miscarriages after the birth of her only child, son Gabriel.
In an emotional interview with Anh Do, on his ABC show Anh's Brush With Fame, she spoke of that painful time of her life.
"I lost three after Gab," she said.
"I miscarried, like, a lot.
"Most women do – they miscarry. I miscarried three times after Gab.
"I really wanted to add on to the family."
She described one particularly challenging time when living in London that she miscarried in front of Gabriel, who was just two years old. Her partner, Vincent Mancini, was away when it happened.
"I think the thing that was tough was that Gab was there and watching it happen," the 49-year-old said.
"And I didn't know what was going on other than I went 'Something is not right. Something is definitely not right'.
"Gab was there watching me go through that pain, and was holding me going, 'Mummy, Mummy', and I'm going, 'It's okay darling'.
"You know, sometimes you can still see that panic in his eyes.
"If he doesn't see me happy or something, I almost go back to that moment in time where I remember Gabriel, at two years of age, who absolutely knew that something wasn't right with his mum."
Tina then explained how the next day, after taking her son to day care, she took herself to the hospital.
"It was unbelievably painful," she said.
"I took Gabriel to crèche, I got on a bus, and I took myself to the hospital.
"I went through the operation, got myself back on a bus, caught the bus home by myself and went and picked up my son from crèche.
"Life's glamourous isn't it?"
The losses left her feeling "really stoic" for years, but it wasn't until she hit menopause in recent years that the reality she wouldn't be expanding her family really hit home.
"It wasn't until a couple of years after that it really hit me and I fell apart," she said.
"That's when I went, 'I can never reproduce again. My body's done. The machine's broken down'. That was tough."
Yet, despite the tumultuous times, she is thankful for her son Gabriel.
"I'm grateful that the universe gave me one magnificent little gremlin," she said.
