It’s 1988, All-Star Saturday in Chicago. Bird had won the first two three-point contests and is looking for the three-peat.
Now you have to understand what Bird meant to so many people around my age growing up. The first video game I remember playing was Dr. J vs. Larry Bird. My brother was always Dr. J. Bird … he was mine. So when Larry put his skills on display, I was glued to the TV.
The NBA introduced the 3-Point Shootout competition during the 1986 All-Star Weekend and for the first two years of the competition, Bird was dominant. He proved himself to be the best long-distance shooter in the league – this much was clear.
Before the shootout began Bird walked around the locker room and posed the most cocky of questions: "Who's finishing second?"
After his previous domination, it seemed as if he had everything under control – but in ’88 the Silent Assassin was lurking.
Dale Ellis had one of the sweetest shots the league has ever seen, and he was poised to give Bird almost all he could handle. I watched as Ellis smoothly knocked down shot after shot in the final round, leaving a score of 15 – the road would not be easy for Bird. Would it be possible? Would somebody best the "Basketball Jesus" from beyond the arc?
No, this was Larry Bird, he would back up his words – something that meant a lot to a young basketball fan. It sticks with me to this day. After tying Ellis with 15 points and with the last ball, the money ball, in his hands Larry Legend fired and a second later with the ball barely off his fingers, turned and walked away with his index finger in the air.
Behind him the money ball splashed in and Bird remained the Man, not just of the 3-Point Shootout but of basketball for many of us.
If that ball doesn’t fall, Bird’s gesture becomes a joke that would live to this day. But that was part of Bird’s charm, there no way that red and white money shot was going astray.
Does the legacy of this contest last the test of time? Last year we asked Vladimir Radmanovic if he had any memories of the 3-Point Shootout.
"Somebody told me that Larry Bird came out in the lockerroom and said, ‘Okay, who’s going to be second here?’ So I think that’s kind of cool; a little cocky, but cool,” Radmanovic said.
Cocky but the coolest, that was Larry Bird on that February night in 1988."

Shot between Christmas and New Years Eve, 2011, photographer Jordan Manley and filmer Anthony Bonello from b4apres Media joined Rossignol athletes Dave and Tessa Treadway at Great Canadian Heli-Skiing (www.canadianheli-skiing.com) to shoot and capture some unique images and angles.
The exact location of the shoot was in great Canadian's Burnt Forests. These are sections of forest where a fire has destroyed the undergrowth, leaving beautifully spaced trees, and wind protected powder snow. The Burnt Forests are numerous in Great Canadian's terrain and provides amazing skiing when it is DUMPING snow, allowing guests to continue to HELIski while other operations might be experiencing a 'down day' or jumping into a slow, smelly, noisy snowcat.
The staff and guests at Heather Mountain Lodge joined the crew in the evenings for food, drinks and even a bit of a sing-along. Enjoy.

Forest Whitaker
Forest Steven Whitaker III (born July 15, 1961) is an American actor, director, and producer.
He has earned a reputation for intensive character study work for films such as Bird, Platoon, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai and Lee Daniels' The Butler, for his work in independent films and for his recurring role as LAPD Internal Affairs Lieutenant Jon Kavanaugh on the Emmy Award-winning television series The Shield.
Whitaker won the Academy Award, British Academy Film Award, Golden Globe Award, National Board of Review Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and various critics groups awards for his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the 2006 film The Last King of Scotland.
Early life
Whitaker was born July 15, 1961, in Longview, Texas. His family moved to Carson, California when he was four. His father, Forest Steven Jr., was an insurance salesman. Forest's mother, Laura Francis (née Smith), was a special education teacher who put herself through college and earned two master's degrees while raising her children. Whitaker has two younger brothers, Kenn and Damon, and an older sister, Deborah.

The director and girl are left in coney island to finally open up about feelings long withheld. When her jealous tattoo filled ex gets wind of the situation he starts a beef between the director of the film and the Outlaw biker community by spray painting the clubhouse of a biker club with the Warriors insignia leading them to the film maker. The ex arrives with his own crew to get the director as well. Action romance and the warriors. The use of real Outlaw bikers in film is a novelty. They usually keep to them selves. But with Mark Ortiz a seasoned Biker who helped get them into film this really makes a good comical wild ride thats similar to the Original Warriors in some ways. Now you have to understand what Bird meant to so many people around my age growing up. The first video game I remember playing was Dr. J vs. Larry Bird. My brother was always Dr. J. Bird … he was mine. So when Larry put his skills on display, I was glued to the TV.
The NBA introduced the 3-Point Shootout competition during the 1986 All-Star Weekend and for the first two years of the competition, Bird was dominant. He proved himself to be the best long-distance shooter in the league – this much was clear.
Before the shootout began Bird walked around the locker room and posed the most cocky of questions: "Who's finishing second?"
After his previous domination, it seemed as if he had everything under control – but in ’88 the Silent Assassin was lurking.
Dale Ellis had one of the sweetest shots the league has ever seen, and he was poised to give Bird almost all he could handle. I watched as Ellis smoothly knocked down shot after shot in the final round, leaving a score of 15 – the road would not be easy for Bird. Would it be possible? Would somebody best the "Basketball Jesus" from beyond the arc?
No, this was Larry Bird, he would back up his words – something that meant a lot to a young basketball fan. It sticks with me to this day. After tying Ellis with 15 points and with the last ball, the money ball, in his hands Larry Legend fired and a second later with the ball barely off his fingers, turned and walked away with his index finger in the air.
Behind him the money ball splashed in and Bird remained the Man, not just of the 3-Point Shootout but of basketball for many of us.
If that ball doesn’t fall, Bird’s gesture becomes a joke that would live to this day. But that was part of Bird’s charm, there no way that red and white money shot was going astray.
Does the legacy of this contest last the test of time? Last year we asked Vladimir Radmanovic if he had any memories of the 3-Point Shootout.
"Somebody told me that Larry Bird came out in the lockerroom and said, ‘Okay, who’s going to be second here?’ So I think that’s kind of cool; a little cocky, but cool,” Radmanovic said.
Cocky but the coolest, that was Larry Bird on that February night in 1988."

The exact location of the shoot was in great Canadian's Burnt Forests. These are sections of forest where a fire has destroyed the undergrowth, leaving beautifully spaced trees, and wind protected powder snow. The Burnt Forests are numerous in Great Canadian's terrain and provides amazing skiing when it is DUMPING snow, allowing guests to continue to HELIski while other operations might be experiencing a 'down day' or jumping into a slow, smelly, noisy snowcat.
The staff and guests at Heather Mountain Lodge joined the crew in the evenings for food, drinks and even a bit of a sing-along. Enjoy.

A mercurial mix of fairy-tale adventure, knockabout farce, moral allegory and, above all, marvellous music (including the thrilling Queen of the Night Aria), Mozart’s The Magic Flute was premiered just ten weeks before the composer’s tragically early death. It proved to be the biggest popular success of his short life, as well as arguably the most deeply moving of all his operas.
Acclaimed as ‘a well-established jewel of ENO’s repertoire’ (Evening Standard) and ‘one of ENO’s most magical productions’ (The Times), National Theatre Director Nicholas Hytner’s spectacular staging has thrilled audiences of all ages since it was first seen in 1988 and now returns – complete with giant serpent, dancing bears and live performing birds – to celebrate its 25th anniversary on the London Coliseum stage.
With its panto-style storyline, catchy tunes, broad comedy and profound humanity, The Magic Flute is the perfect introduction to opera for anyone who has never been before.

Aride island is one of the numerous travel documentaries that Morol produces, Aride Island is the northernmost granitic island in the Seychelles (Bird Island is the northernmost Seychelles island overall) and is part of the district of Grand'Anse, located 10 km north of Praslin island and is 68 hectares in area. A nature reserve, it is leased and managed by the Island Conservation Society of Seychelles. The only human inhabitants are the reserve's staff; currently four Seychellois rangers, two expatriate Conservation Officers and two volunteers. They live in small houses on the south side of the island.
Over 1.25 million seabirds regularly breed on Aride including the world's largest colony of Lesser Noddy, the largest Seychelles population of Roseate Terns and the world's largest colony of Tropical Shearwater. There is also an enormous roost of non-breeding frigatebirds. The Seychelles Warbler was introduced from Cousin Island to Aride in 1988 and its population is now the largest in the world with over 2,000 pairs. The Seychelles Fody was also introduced from Cousin in 2002, as well the Seychelles Magpie Robin from Fregate Island. The Seychelles Blue Pigeon and the Seychelles Sunbird have re-colonised Aride naturally.
Reptilian fauna includes several species of skink, three species of gecko and three species of non-poisonous snakes. Green Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles are regular visitors to the beaches of Aride.

The Burnt Forests are numerous in Great Canadian's terrain and provides amazing skiing when it is DUMPING snow, allowing guests to continue to HELIski while other operations might be experiencing a 'down day' or jumping into a slow, smelly, noisy snowcat.
The staff and guests at Heather Mountain Lodge joined the crew in the evenings for food, drinks and even a bit of a sing-along. Enjoy.

I had the opportunity to give a talk about Gene Youngbloods theories of moving images, the intermedia network,
the interdependency between humans and their so-called "noosphere" (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Vladimir Vernadsky) and Vilém Flusser thoughts about early digital media culture.
This inspired me to make an audiovisual animation.

A little slice of history makes it's way into the hallowed corridors of the Lab today with an exclusive video of both 'White Man Sleeps' and 'Bird Song' from the Siobhan Davies Dance Company. The former has not been performed since 1997 and is a revival of a work first created in 1988, for contemporary dance, that's history!
The company's work is based on the some of the most solid foundations of contemporary dance, simple costume, strong movement, stronger dancers and, in SDDC's case, superb use of lighting by Peter Mumford and Adrian Plaut.
The press musings tells us this about White Man Sleeps and Bird Song;
"SDDC's signature work returns in a new production in 2005. This work marked a turning point for Siobhan Davies in 1988 and provided a springboard for the launch of a major new independent dance company. Since then, White Man Sleeps has emerged as a contemporary 'classic', studied by students and performed by leading dance companies. It is being revived for the first time since 1997."

This is our entry for the Film4 Scene Stealer's Competition 2012. We had to reinterpret an iconic Film4 moment in under 2mins.
We chose Shane Meadows Dead Man's Shoes. As for the idea I think we were a little inspired by the release of The Dark Knight Rises. Also if you’re a fan of the Batman comic book you'll recall that in the Death in the Family (1988) storyline the Joker kills off Robin, this seemed to play a nice parallel with the characters in Dead Man's Shoes.

We sat down with Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker to talk about his new movie The Butler.
FOREST WHITAKER (CECIL GAINES)
Forest Whitaker is a distinguished artist and humanist. He is the founder of PeaceEarth Foundation, co-founder and chair of the International Institute for Peace and is the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation. Whitaker is also a talented, versatile performer and one of Hollywood's most accomplished figures. He has received prestigious artistic distinctions including the 2007 Academy Award® for Best Actor for his performance in The Last King of Scotland as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. He has also received the BAFTA Award, SAG Award, and Golden Globe® for Best Actor. In addition, Whitaker received the Best Actor for Bird at the Cannes Film Festival.
Whitaker has dedicated most of his time to extensive humanitarian work over the past decade. His social awareness has compelled him to seek ways of using the film medium as a means to raise peoples' consciousness. He produced the award-winning documentary Kassim the Dream,
which tells the poignant story of a Ugandan child soldier turned world championship boxer, Rising From Ashes, which profiles Genocide survivors of the Rwandan war who have risen from wooden bicycles to competing in the Olympics, Serving Life, which focuses on hospice care for prisoners at Louisiana's Angola Prison, and the Emmy nominated and Peabody Award-winning Brick City, which takes a look at inner-city life in Newark, New Jersey.
In 2007, Whitaker received the Cinema for Peace Award for his selfless and ongoing advocacy for child soldiers, as well as his work with inner-city youth. He was also awarded the Humanitas Prize in 2001. In 2008, he served as a member of the Urban Policy Committee and currently sits on the board of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH). Whitaker serves as a Senior Research Scholar at Rutgers University, and a Visiting Professor at Ringling College of Art and Design. In 2011, Whitaker was designated as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation. In this role, he works towards global peace building through anti-violent education, research, training and community building. In recognition of his commitment as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and for his outstanding contribution to the work of the Organization, Whitaker received in December 2012 the United Nations Correspondents Association Advocate of the Year Award. In 2013, Boston University's Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center appointed Whitaker as a Martin Luther King Jr. Fellow.

Whitaker has dedicated most of his time to extensive humanitarian work over the past decade. His social awareness has compelled him to seek ways of using the film medium as a means to raise peoples' consciousness. He produced the award-winning documentary Kassim the Dream,
which tells the poignant story of a Ugandan child soldier turned world championship boxer, Rising From Ashes, which profiles Genocide survivors of the Rwandan war who have risen from wooden bicycles to competing in the Olympics, Serving Life, which focuses on hospice care for prisoners at Louisiana's Angola Prison, and the Emmy nominated and Peabody Award-winning Brick City, which takes a look at inner-city life in Newark, New Jersey.
In 2007, Whitaker received the Cinema for Peace Award for his selfless and ongoing advocacy for child soldiers, as well as his work with inner-city youth. He was also awarded the Humanitas Prize in 2001. In 2008, he served as a member of the Urban Policy Committee and currently sits on the board of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH). Whitaker serves as a Senior Research Scholar at Rutgers University, and a Visiting Professor at Ringling College of Art and Design. In 2011, Whitaker was designated as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation. In this role, he works towards global peace building through anti-violent education, research, training and community building. In recognition of his commitment as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and for his outstanding contribution to the work of the Organization, Whitaker received in December 2012 the United Nations Correspondents Association Advocate of the Year Award. In 2013, Boston University's Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center appointed Whitaker as a Martin Luther King Jr. Fellow.

This Sparrowhawk did not let his cuckoo counterpart get off lightly in this battle of the birds and at one stage the feathers were literally flying….
31-year-old, Organ Sabiepark, who works at Sabie Park just outside the Paul Kruger Gate, was able to capture this moment on film.
Organ tells us: “I have the best job in the entire world! Getting to spend the whole day being with animals, there is nothing like it"
This was the first time I’ve seen an eagle killing anything.
I was working at the picnic site, as usual, when I heard a noise coming from nearby. I started looking around and suddenly spotted the Sparrowhawk strangling a Jacobin Cuckoo.
When I watched the sighting play itself out, I felt sad about what was happening! The Sparrowhawk was biting the Jacobin Cuckoo and trying to kill it, all while the cuckoo was fighting for its life and trying to escape.
At the end, after fighting extremely long and hard, the Cuckoo managed to get away. That was in some way a great relief.”
Sparrowhawks rely on the element of surprise and as such will often follow a regular route to get close to potential prey.
