The simple and fun way to get kids riding

Road test: the Balance Buddy lives up to its name

My child is not what you would call ‘coordinated’, in fact, most toddlers aren’t. They’re a bit like tipsy folks wandering out of a bar on a Friday night, you never know when they might topple over.

So when I was given the chance to let my two-year-old try out the Balance Buddy bike from VeloGear I was sceptical.  If she stumbles while walking, I doubted she was going to stay upright without training wheels.

But I was pleasantly surprised to see her take off straight away, whizzing around the garden without any trouble.

A new kind of balance bike

The coolest thing about these bikes is that they are adjustable so they can grow with your child.  I didn’t find the plastic version as aesthetically pleasing as the wooden versions, but the bonus is that it can live outside without rotting or splintering. I also liked that the plastic is non toxic and BPA free.

I found the assembly a little bit difficult, but once it was done my toddler didn’t have any trouble figuring out how it worked.

It’s a great way to get kids out in the open air and starting them on what will hopefully be a lifelong love of cycling and exercise.
