The term "folio", from the Latin folium (leaf), has three interconnected but distinct meanings in the world of books and printing. It is firstly a term for a common method of arranging sheets of paper into book form, folding the sheet only once, and a term for a book made in this way. Secondly it is a general term for a sheet, leaf or page in (especially) manuscripts and old books, and thirdly an approximate term for the size of a book, and for a book of this size.
Firstly a folio (abbreviated fo or 2°) is a book or pamphlet made up of one or more full sheets of paper, on each of which four pages of text are printed, two on each side; each sheet is then folded once to produce two leaves. Each leaf of a folio book thus is one half the size of the original sheet. Ordinarily, additional printed folio sheets would be inserted inside one another to form a group or "gathering" of leaves prior to binding the book.
Secondly "folio" is used in terms of page numbering for some books and most manuscripts that are bound but without page numbers as an equivalent of "page" (both sides), "sheet" or "leaf", using recto and verso to designate the first and second sides, and (unlike the usage in printing) disregarding whether the leaf concerned is actually physically still joined with another leaf. This usually appears abbreviated: "f26r." means the first side of the 26th leaf in a book. This will be on the right hand side of the opening of any book composed in a script that is read from left-to-right, such as Latin (as used in English), Cyrillic, or Greek, and will be opposite for books composed in a script that is read from right-to-left, such as Hebrew and Arabic.
The Folio Society is a privately owned London-based publisher, founded by Charles Ede in 1947 and incorporated in 1971. It produces illustrated hardback editions of classic fiction and non-fiction books. Each Folio edition features specially designed bindings and includes artist-commissioned illustrations (most often in fiction titles) or researched artworks and photographs (in non-fiction titles). Most editions come with their own slipcase.
The Folio Society was founded in 1947 by Charles Ede, Christopher Sandford (of Golden Cockerel Press), and Alan Bott (founder of Pan Books). The firm's goal was to produce "editions of the world's great literature, in a format worthy of the contents, at a price within the reach of everyman." Folio and the Golden Cockerel Press shared premises in Poland Street until 1955. Subsequent offices were located in the Mayfair and Borough areas of London. The Folio Society moved to its current location, 44 Eagle Street, Holborn, in 1994.
The society issued its first three titles in 1947. In October of that year Tolstoy's Tales went on sale for sixteen shillings (this would have been about US$3 in 1947, or just over US$110 in 2014.) Tales was followed in November and December by George du Maurier's Trilby and a translation of Aucassin et Nicolette, establishing a pattern of monthly publication.

Strukt was commissioned to design and program an interactive folio for the „Space“ exhibition at the Technical Museum in Vienna (http://www.technischesmuseum.at/ausstellung/space). Baroque engravings showing historical representations of the Earth and the solar system were used as source materials. These engravings represented a mix of scientific facts known at the time, mythical creatures and an all-powerful God presiding over it all. The folio was part of an elaborate exhibition, which dedicated more than 600 m² to the subject of space in all its facets. Visitors of the exhibition can browse through the pages via a gesture-based interface and get information on the different engravings and their authors. Hotspots hovering on the left side of the page can be triggered to zoom in on a spec...
Right after i moved to Berlin, Alex Schneider came by for a visit. He told me about a new project a friend of him was working on, it was called "Folio Magazine" and was supposed to be a print magazine including a DVD. Something like 60 pages and 180 minutes of video. He had a hard drive with him which contained about 120 GB raw footage of him doing what he does best, taking photos. 6 Months and lots and lots of working hours later Folio turned out to be an I pad Magazine, but my part didn't really change, the Alex Schneider Interview. We went from the Alps to the sea, had lots of fun doing this and became good friends in the end. Yeah.
In the late, late hours, feelings of passion arise together with distant, sweet fond memories from the past. One could only imagine what they are by visiting Christelle in her solitude.
16mm film project for school. This video was directed by John Albrecht (http://vimeo.com/johnalbrecht), and I served as Director of Photography. This was our first chance to try out a Bolex 16mm camera, and I did some pretty acrobatic moves, including a reverse floor slide using a blanket and someone to pull me.

tizavideo.com Jemma Lewis talked to TIZA Video about the process of hand marbling paper for our Letterpress Shakespeare series. TIZA Video, a London based Video Production agency, were amazed by the results from process that Jemma undertook to create the unique paper marbling for the Folio Society. We videoed the whole process from start to finish in their workshop for paper marbling. We filmed some of the process using time lapse so we could show the gouache paint being using to create the effect for the paper marbling. Along with videoing an interview with Gemma explaining how she creates the pattern and the process in which she uses. Jemma works out of a charming garden workshop with her father and prepares beautiful marbled sheets using an ancient method which she explains in the mes...

It's cold outside in the middle of the winter and my brain's in the fridge
(Would you know what shape I'm in)
Point things in the better I'm lucky if I even give in to the sin
(Would you know what shape I'm in)
And it's all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down
Photography mixed in the monogamy keepin' my world happenin'
(would you know what shape I'm in)
I know that I'm better when I know that you are better and I'll hold you again
(would you know what shape I'm in)
And its all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down
And it's all been luck until now
I only hope that you're still 'round me now
And it's gonna rage
it's gonna stay with you always
Every second counts on you to prove you're off the ground
It's cold outside in the middle of the winter and my brains in the fridge
Point things in the better I'm lucky if I even give in to the sin
And its all been luck until now
And its all been luck until now
