Otaru (小樽) is a small harbor city, about 40km(25ml) northwest of Sapporo. With beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions, Otaru is a pleasant day trip city from Sapporo or a nice stop en route to or from Niseko or the Shakotan Peninsula.
Otaru served as a major trade and fishing port from Hokkaido's colonization in the late 1800s. For this reason it was chosen as the terminal station of Hokkaido's first railway line that connected the port with nearby Sapporo. Many old warehouses and former office buildings by trade and shipping companies give Otaru's city center a special character reminiscent of past decades.

On his LAST night in Sapporo... around 2 am.. as we were finishing our last drinks.. MY visiting friend met a chick that he could only describe as PERFECT. EXACTLY the type of look he likes.. He waved her into the bar from near the hall bathrooms and to his surprise.. SHE CAME IN. Needless to say.. we drank for quite a while longer.. and SOMEHOW.. he made his 8 am flight the next day. Oh how magical Sapporo is!!

今回で3回目の撮影になりますが、ますます美しさと輝きを増しています。
雪景色とイルミネーションは良く似合いますね！

Sapporo
Sapporo (札幌市, Sapporo-shi) 
listen is the fourth-largest city in Japan by population, and the largest city on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Located in Ishikari Subprefecture, it is the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture, and an ordinance-designated city of Japan.
Sapporo is known outside Japan for having hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, the first ever held in Asia, and for the city's annual Yuki Matsuri, internationally referred to as the Sapporo Snow Festival, which draws more than 2 million tourists from around the world. The city is also home to Sapporo Brewery and the white chocolate biscuits called shiroi koibito (白い恋人, "white sweetheart").
History
Early history
Before its establishment, the area occupied by Sapporo (known as the Ishikari Plain) was home to a number of indigenous Ainu settlements. In 1866, at the end of the Edo Period, construction began on a canal through the area, encouraging a number of early settlers to establish Sapporo village. The settlement's name was taken from the Ainu language sat poro pet (サッ・ポロ・ペッ), and can be translated as "dry, great river".

Otaru (小樽) is a small harbor city, about 40km(25ml) northwest of Sapporo. With beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions, Otaru is a pleasant day trip city from Sapporo or a nice stop en route to or from Niseko or the Shakotan Peninsula.
Otaru served as a major trade and fishing port from Hokkaido's colonization in the late 1800s. For this reason it was chosen as the terminal station of Hokkaido's first railway line that connected the port with nearby Sapporo. Many old warehouses and former office buildings by trade and shipping companies give Otaru's city center a special character reminiscent of past decades.

Hokkaido 3 day travel guide in Sapporo and day trips from Sapporo!
Hokkaido is the second largest, northernmost and least developed island in Japan.
Hokkaido is famous for it’s snow and ski resorts in winter, however it’s also well known for it’s unspoiled nature, fresh seafood and dairy products.
This time I travel to and around Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture and also the fifth largest city of Japan.

I spent 3 days in Hokkaido during Golden Week in Japan! Check out the most popular sightseeings spots, eat all the specialty foods and hang out with some cute animals! Hopefully this video is helpful for some of you guys who are planning to visit Hokkaido! It's definitely worth a visit!
Some extra things I didn't get to mention in the video:
- Eat soup curry (we didn't get to eat in a restaurant because the line was too long, but we got some packaged ones at the airport and tried at home, it was surprisingly good!!! You can also buy many other packages foods at the airport)
- Hokkaido Shrine in Maruyama Park
- Go to an onsen
- Hello Kitty Happy Flight at the airport

Sapporo seems peaceful at street level but there are miles and miles of underground passages and shopping malls that bring out the "crowded" feel of larger Japanese cities like Tokyo. Come in the summer in enjoy the beer festival, or in the winter to enjoy the massive snow and ice sculptures.

Hokkaido is famous for it’s snow and ski resorts in winter, however it’s also well known for it’s unspoiled nature, fresh seafood and dairy products.
This time I travel to and around Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture and also the fifth largest city of Japan.

Sapporo...my mum's hometown :)
1. Hanami
I fly to Sapporo every summer to visit my family, but this was the first time for me to go during the spring. I could therefore experience Hanami, the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of cherry blossoms and plum blossoms. If you're in Sapporo end of April - beginning of May, definitely go to Maruyama Park, Hiraoka Bairin Park and Nakajima Park.
2. Shopping
My favorite places to shop: 4 (Yon) chome area, Sapporo Station, Tanukikoji, Sapporo Factory, Mitsui Outlet Park Kitahiroshima.
3. Tourist attractions
If you're looking for traditional monuments, go to Hokkaido Jingu (Shinto shrine) and Shinei Ji (Bhuddist temple).
Take also a look at western-style buildings typical of 19th century Japan. The Former Hokkaido government office and Sapporo clock tower are the landmarks of Sapporo.
Want to see Sapporo from afar or above? Hitsujigaoka observation hill, Asahiyama park, Mount Moiwa, Sapporo JR Tower Observatory T38 and Sapporo TV Tower are good spots.
Make sure to be at Mount Moiwa for sunset. The night view from there is a must! Not only it has been listed as one of the best night views in Hokkaido but also as one of the best night view cities in Japan!
4. Festivals
Check if there aren't any special events during your stay in Sapporo!
In this video, I've included the Lilac festival, the YOSAKOI Soran Festival and the Hokkaido Jingu Festival, all of which have good street food. Speaking of food...
5. FOOD!!!
Travel and food...a match made in heaven! Hokkaido is actually known for having delicious food even amongst Japanese.
One of the most popular dishes is Genghis Khan (Jingisukan) BBQ, which is grilled lamb and grilled vegetables marinated or dipped in a special sauce. It is a distinct speciality of Hokkaido as lamb is not a commonly eaten meat in Japan. If you're at Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill and your stomach sounds like a dying whale, you're at the right place! The Hitsujigaoka Rest House Restaurant is a good place to try it!
Seafood harvested from the northern sea has better taste and flavor. No wonder why Hokkaido is the best place for fresh crabs, sea urchin, squid, salmon and scallops! You'll enjoy sushi even more in Hokkaido. Add Hanamaru in your restaurant list.
Aaand don't forget Hokkaido Ramen!
6. Beer
If you like drinking, then you can't leave a place without tasting its local beer. Visit the Sapporo Beer Museum and have a sip at the Sapporo Beer Garden (which goes perfectly with Jingisukan btw)!

Sapporo...my mum's hometown :)
1. Hanami
I fly to Sapporo every summer to visit my family, but this was the first time for me to go during the spring. I could therefore experience Hanami, the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of cherry blossoms and plum blossoms. If you're in Sapporo end of April - beginning of May, definitely go to Maruyama Park, Hiraoka Bairin Park and Nakajima Park.
2. Shopping
My favorite places to shop: 4 (Yon) chome area, Sapporo Station, Tanukikoji, Sapporo Factory, Mitsui Outlet Park Kitahiroshima.
3. Tourist attractions
If you're looking for traditional monuments, go to Hokkaido Jingu (Shinto shrine) and Shinei Ji (Bhuddist temple).
Take also a look at western-style buildings typical of 19th century Japan. The Former Hokkaido government office and Sapporo clock tower are the landmarks of Sapporo.
Want to see Sapporo from afar or above? Hitsujigaoka observation hill, Asahiyama park, Mount Moiwa, Sapporo JR Tower Observatory T38 and Sapporo TV Tower are good spots.
Make sure to be at Mount Moiwa for sunset. The night view from there is a must! Not only it has been listed as one of the best night views in Hokkaido but also as one of the best night view cities in Japan!
4. Festivals
Check if there aren't any special events during your stay in Sapporo!
In this video, I've included the Lilac festival, the YOSAKOI Soran Festival and the Hokkaido Jingu Festival, all of which have good street food. Speaking of food...
5. FOOD!!!
Travel and food...a match made in heaven! Hokkaido is actually known for having delicious food even amongst Japanese.
One of the most popular dishes is Genghis Khan (Jingisukan) BBQ, which is grilled lamb and grilled vegetables marinated or dipped in a special sauce. It is a distinct speciality of Hokkaido as lamb is not a commonly eaten meat in Japan. If you're at Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill and your stomach sounds like a dying whale, you're at the right place! The Hitsujigaoka Rest House Restaurant is a good place to try it!
Seafood harvested from the northern sea has better taste and flavor. No wonder why Hokkaido is the best place for fresh crabs, sea urchin, squid, salmon and scallops! You'll enjoy sushi even more in Hokkaido. Add Hanamaru in your restaurant list.
Aaand don't forget Hokkaido Ramen!
6. Beer
If you like drinking, then you can't leave a place without tasting its local beer. Visit the Sapporo Beer Museum and have a sip at the Sapporo Beer Garden (which goes perfectly with Jingisukan btw)!

From my room, though my house is not in a really typical 住宅街 like the "Homest Town" in this video, I could jump into the next house's room if the window is opened. Usually in those residential areas, a house has room for one car or two in the parking area. Two-floor houses are typical, although some are three-floor (those are not so common as two-floor ones, and seen more in urban areas, where the land is more expensive and you can't get wide land), and one-floor houses can be seen, too, but they tend to be more "Japanese style" houses, and they are wider, not necessarily tall. ...

Nature walk in Hokkaido - Mt Annupuri & Hangetsu-ko
In this video I go for a bit of a walk about, in an effort to learn more about the plants and animals that are in my area... I will use this video as a way to teach myself about the plants around me, during these little walks I will video interesting plants or things that catch my eye and try to learn about them later on using video and photos as reference, during these excursions I managed to identify a few interesting edible and medicinal plants, but even more importantly I learnt about 3 poisonous plants that I now recognize and can stay away from... It has taken me much longer to edit this video than I had anticipated and I'm pretty sure most people will skip watching after a few minutes.. oh well, I hope that is not the case... In this video I blatantly label stuff with Latin name...

Those types of residential areas (which is called 住宅街: meaning residents-town) are very typical in Japan, and it's often that each house stands even 1-2 m close to each other. From my room, though my house is not in a really typical 住宅街 like the "Homest Town" in this video, I could jump into the next house's room if the window is opened.
Usually in those residential areas, a house has room for one car or two in the parking area. Two-floor houses are typical, although some are three-floor (those are not so common as two-floor ones, and seen more in urban areas, where the land is more expensive and you can't get wide land), and one-floor houses can be seen, too, but they tend to be more "Japanese style" houses, and they are wider, not necessarily tall.
Oh, and about the difference between アパート and マンション, is usually, you BUY (with loan or not) your own room in mansion for some ten million yen or so. On the other hand, in アパート, you only rent your room, and pay monthly. And as I said in the video, "mansion (マンション)" are likely much huger, more gorgeous (some have gym, swimming pool, residents-only cafe and such, etc.) than "apartment (アパート)." And usually, マンション have entrance with doors that often have number-lock. You can't enter if you don't live there, unless the door is unlocked for you (or you are told the number) by the resident you are visiting.
So, even though either マンション or アパート is not your own HOUSE, people living in マンション are often considered rich (though it's actually not your own house, like one-standing house, but because you buy it), and people living in アパート are poorer, compared to those who live in マンション (but not necessarily, not to mention).
I myself have lived in two アパート, and both had eight rooms. I've been to my friends' マンション before, and they were like 20-floor tall, and had hundreds of rooms.

In this video I go for a bit of a walk about, in an effort to learn more about the plants and animals that are in my area... I will use this video as a way to teach myself about the plants around me, during these little walks I will video interesting plants or things that catch my eye and try to learn about them later on using video and photos as reference, during these excursions I managed to identify a few interesting edible and medicinal plants, but even more importantly I learnt about 3 poisonous plants that I now recognize and can stay away from...
It has taken me much longer to edit this video than I had anticipated and I'm pretty sure most people will skip watching after a few minutes.. oh well, I hope that is not the case...
In this video I blatantly label stuff with Latin names, this isn't to be pretentious, it'll just make it easier for me to find stuff again later... this is an ongoing learning experience...
Please correct anything, or if you know any names for anything please mention in the comments...
This isn't a bushcraft video, just a little intro to some of the terrain and species in my part of Hokkaido, Japan.

40分近くありますが、映画ファンの想像力を掻き立てる、すごく俺好みの独創的で楽しいパフォーマンスだったので、2012年10月21日14時から世田谷区立太子堂小学校開場で上演されたものをほぼノーカットでアップしておきます。
気持ちのよい青空の下、ジャンルの異なる複数のアーティストが魅せる、この日この時間だけの幸せな空気。
アーティストの皆さんと一緒のテンション、キモチで撮ったので、客席と演者の距離感が圧倒的に近い、大道芸の魅力と、空気感の伝わる動画になっていたら嬉しいです。
