WPXI, channel 11, is an NBC-affiliated television station located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The station is owned by the Cox Media Group, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Cox Enterprises. WPXI's offices and studios are located on Evergreen Road in the Summer Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and its transmitter is located on Television Hill in the Fineview section of the city, on the site of the station's original studio location.
On September 1, 1957, Pittsburgh's second commercial VHF station signed on as WIIC. The station's construction permit was originally issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in June 1955 to WIIC Incorporated – a joint venture of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which owned WWSW radio (970 AM, now WBGG), and Pittsburgh Radio Supply House, the then-owners of WJAS radio (1320 AM). Both radio stations had competed individually for the permit grant along with other applicants. CBS, which was looking to gain its own full-time affiliate in the market, signed a contract with the then-unnamed channel 11 shortly thereafter. Before the "freeze" on television station licenses, the two stations were competing for the channel 10 license originally assigned to Pittsburgh before the FCC reallocated the channels in 1952, with channel 10 going to Altoona; the Hearst Corporation (then-owners of WCAE and eventual owners of WTAE-TV) and two other companies were also applying for the channel 10 license.
The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) is an American commercial broadcast television and radio network that is the flagship property of NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. The network is headquartered in the Comcast Building (formerly known as the GE Building) at Rockefeller Center in New York City, with additional major offices near Los Angeles (at Universal City Plaza), Chicago (at the NBC Tower) and soon in Philadelphia at Comcast Innovation and Technology Center. The network is part of the Big Three television networks. NBC is sometimes referred to as the "Peacock Network", in reference to its stylized peacock logo, which was originally created in 1956 for its then-new color broadcasts and became the network's official emblem in 1979.
Founded in 1926 by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), NBC is the oldest major broadcast network in the United States. In 1986, control of NBC passed to General Electric (GE) – which previously owned RCA and NBC until 1930, when it was forced to sell the companies as a result of antitrust charges – through its $6.4 billion purchase of RCA. Following the acquisition by GE (which later liquidated RCA), Bob Wright served as chief executive officer of NBC, remaining in that position until his retirement in 2007, when he was succeeded by Jeff Zucker. In 2003, French media company Vivendi merged its entertainment assets with GE, forming NBC Universal. Comcast purchased a controlling interest in the company in 2011, and acquired General Electric's remaining stake in 2013. Following the Comcast merger, Zucker left NBC Universal and was replaced as CEO by Comcast executive Steve Burke.
Behaving Badly is a thoroughbred racing mare born on April 5, 2001 in New York and a top sprinting distaffer. Sired by Pioneering, a Mr. Prospector son (going back to Secretariat), out of Timeleighness (by Sir Raleigh), she was bred by Thomas and Lakin, and owned by Patti and Hal J. Earnhardt III.
Behaving Badly is a half-sister to stakes-winning filly Lavish Numbers. Her dam, Timeleighness, is a full sister to stakes winner Timelessleigh.
Trained by Bob Baffert, she had been pointed to the $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint for 2006, but instead Baffert decided to retire her after a disappointing effort in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland Race Course. He said, "There have always been little things that bothered her, so I just didn't want to press her anymore. She'd done so much, what was there left for her to do?"
Of her thirteen starts, Behaving Badly won nine, and placed in 2. This means she was out of the money only twice. Racing under jockey Victor Espinoza through her fifth year, she earned $749,224.
Boston Common (also known as "the Common") is a central public park in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It is sometimes erroneously referred to as the "Boston Commons". Dating from 1634, it is the oldest city park in the United States. The Boston Common consists of 50 acres (20 ha) of land bounded by Tremont Street, Park Street, Beacon Street, Charles Street, and Boylston Street. The Common is part of the Emerald Necklace of parks and parkways that extend from the Common south to Franklin Park in Roxbury. A visitors' center for all of Boston is located on the Tremont Street side of the park.
The Central Burying Ground is located on the Boylston Street side of Boston Common and contains the burial sites of the artist Gilbert Stuart and the composer William Billings. Also buried there are Samuel Sprague and his son, Charles Sprague, one of America's earliest poets. Samuel Sprague was a participant in the Boston Tea Party and fought in the Revolutionary War.
The Common's purpose has changed over the years. It was once owned by William Blaxton (often given the modernized spelling "Blackstone"), the first European settler of Boston, until it was bought from him by the Puritan founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. During the 1630s, it was used by many families as a cow pasture. However, this only lasted for a few years, as affluent families bought additional cows, which led to overgrazing, a real-life example of the Tragedy of the commons. After grazing was limited in 1646 to 70 cows at a time, the Boston Common continued to host cows until they were formally banned from it in 1830 by Mayor Harrison Gray Otis.

WPXI debuted a new Hothaus graphics package and a strange new theme on July 24th, 2014. The look is clean and modern, embracing the flat look a lot of stations seem to be going towards. Skip to 0:40 for the open. The surprise here is the lack of NBC branding. The peacock is gone from it's old home in the supers, and the chimes don't appear in the new music. The only place you really see it is between the anchors, on the set. I had heard new graphics and music were coming, but wasn't expecting something this generic. It's not terrible, but it's repetitive and non-distinct. There only seems to be one cut, modified with sound effects for the weather open, but used in it's unaltered form for opens, bumpers, the lotto, and the close; plus one with a heavier drum beat for sports. Honestly? I...
From WPXI's WEBSITE: Despite prolonged negotiations, it appears that DIRECTV is unwilling to carry WPXI Channel 11 -- the local NBC affiliate for DIRECTV customers -- starting at 3 a.m. ET on New Year's Day. As a result, WPXI Channel 11 will no longer be seen on DIRECTV as of that time. The long-term agreement between WPXI and DIRECTV expires at 3 a.m. ET on January 1, 2017. Thus, DIRECTV's authority to carry WPXI expires at that time. WPXI cannot force DIRECTV to strike a deal that keeps Channel 11 programming on DIRECTV's lineup after that deadline. WPXI has agreements with all other providers. Only DIRECTV is making unreasonable demands. DIRECTV customers who want to continue to watch their favorite NBC shows on WPXI are encouraged to contact DIRECTV at 1-800-531-5000 and/or 1-855...
