On June 1, 1862, its most famous and final leader, General Robert E. Lee, took command after Johnston was wounded, and Smith suffered what may have been a nervous breakdown, at the Battle of Seven Pines. In the first year of his command, Lee had two principal subordinate commanders. The right wing of the army was under the command of Lt. Gen. James Longstreet and the left wing under Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. These wings were redesignated as the First Corps (Longstreet) and Second Corps (Jackson) on November 6, 1862. Following Jackson's death after the Battle of Chancellorsville, Lee reorganized the army into three corps on May 30, 1863, under Longstreet, Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell, and Lt. Gen. A.P. Hill. A Fourth Corps, under Lt. Gen. Richard H. Anderson, was organized on Oct...

Lee came to military prominence during the U.S. Civil War, commanding Virginia's armed forces and becoming general-in-chief of the Confederate forces.
At the outbreak of war, Lee was appointed to command all of Virginia's forces, but upon the formation of the Confederate States Army, he was named one of its first five full generals. Lee did not wear the insignia of a Confederate general, but only the three stars of a Confederate colonel, equivalent to his last U.S. Army rank.[85] He did not intend to wear a general's insignia until the Civil War had been won and he could be promoted, in peacetime, to general in the Confederate Army. Lee's first field assignment was commanding Confederate forces in western Virginia, where he was defeated at the Battle of Cheat Mountain and was widely blamed for Confederate setbacks.[86] He was then sent to organize the coastal defenses along the Carolina and Georgia seaboard, appointed commander, "Depart...
More than 150 years after the end of the American Civil War, General Robert E. Lee remains a source of fascination and controversy. Was he a loyal Virginian, swept up in a bloody Civil War against his will? Is he better understood as an elite slaveholder, who led armies into the field in defense of a racist society? Was he a symbol of nobility and honor, or a traitor? These questions about the past loom large in contemporary conversations about the memory and commemoration of the Confederacy. The Department of History at the University of Florida is proud to host Dr. Gary W. Gallagher, John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia, for the annual Augustus M. Burns Memorial Lecture on Friday, February 19th at 4:00. Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are more than just historical figures -- for some, they are Southern saints. For others, they represent a culture and way of life that was fueled by the enslavement of African Americans. So who were they? On March 29 at 7:30 p.m., the Cathedral will explore the lives and legacies of these two men, and why their stories were honored in stained glass inside Washington National Cathedral. We'll also look at the stories of the people who were impacted by Lee and Jackson's actions, whose stories aren't reflected in those windows. What did we know of them when they were alive, what did we think of them when the Lee-Jackson windows were installed, and what are we to make of them today? Speakers include: Jonathan Horn, author of the best-...

"I want this to be the final battle." A clip from the epic movie Gettysburg, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107007/. In my opinion the best civil war movie and one of the best war movies ever.
I added some commentary to this video. Turn on the Closed Captions. A friggin hour long endeavor of just the first battle in the campaign. Game doesn't really work on today's modern systems, so how does installing and setting windows 95 on top of DOSbox and recording from there strike your fancy? In any case this one is an American Civil War Turn based strategy game from Impressions and Sierra released in 1996. There is a fair amount to this game so don't be surprised if you find yourself wondering what the hell is going on. They still had a fascination with FMVs for this one... though the reenactments are pretty cool and don't hurt the game any.

"Schools around the country close in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. But schools in the Deep South are also observing the birthday of Confederate General, Robert E. Lee. Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia and Alabama all officially roll the holidays together and leave it to schools to communicate the confusing marriage to students. A Mississippi community college decided to name the combination "Heritage Day." Ask what Heritage Day is and hear the response. "Umm..." "I'm not sure." "To be honest, I don't know." "A day we get out of class!"* In some places in the south, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated in tandem with Robert E. Lee's birthday. Is this history, or an excuse to blot out the civil rights leader's accomplishments? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down. ...

In this video I play devils advocate and pose the question, was Robert E Lee, commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia overrated? Or perhaps he was the Southern Grant.
Hey Look at the way she's wavin' her sail,
It's a wonderous sight to see.
People hurry on down from every town
Have a look at the Robert E. Lee.
Proud and strong and made to be free,
Can't go wrong on the Robert E. Lee.
Got the sun in my eyes and the wind in my face.
And it's good just to be alive.
Gonna set out tonight for New Orleans;
I won't sleep till I arrive.
And if I'm lucky
I'll find a young lady under the stars,
And we'll dance the night away.
Somebody wake me and say it's a dream
Leadin' me far from my home.
And haven't you noticed, despite what it seems.
You can't deny it's you and I alone.
Maybe spend my life just workin' the land,
Maybe livin' from day to day.
But I'm free tonight in New Orleans:
If I like it I just might stay!
Proud and strong and made to be free,
Can't go wrong on the Robert E. Lee.
Got the sun in my eyes and the wind in my face.
And it's good just to be alive.
Gonna set out tonight for New Orleans;
I won't sleep till I arrive.
