Harney Peak, or Hinhan Kaga is the highest natural point in South Dakota and the Black Hills. It lies in the Black Elk Wilderness area, in southern Pennington County, in the Black Hills National Forest. The peak lies 3.7 mi (6.0 km) WSW of Mount Rushmore. At 7,242 feet (2,207 m), it has been described by the Board on Geographical Names as the highest summit in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains.Guadalupe Peak and Sierra Blanca also lie far to the east of the Continental Divide and are substantially higher, but the Rockies end north of the region of that latitude.
The natural point was originally called Hinhan Kaga by the Lakota Sioux. The peak was named in the late 1850s by Lieutenant Gouverneur K. Warren in honor of General William S. Harney, who was commander of the military in the Black Hills area in the late 1870s. Some modern-day Lakota have asked for a reinstatement of the original name of Hinhan Kaga. An argument put forth as a reasoning behind it is that the new name is offensive because General William Harney's men massacred Native American women and children during a battle in 1855.
The Black Hills (Ȟe Sápa in Lakota, Moʼȯhta-voʼhonáaeva in Cheyenne, awaxaawi shiibisha in Hidatsa) are a small, isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming, United States.Harney Peak, which rises to 7,244 feet (2,208 m), is the range's highest summit. The Black Hills encompass the Black Hills National Forest. The name "Black Hills" is a translation of the Lakota Pahá Sápa. The hills were so-called because of their dark appearance from a distance, as they were covered in trees.
Native Americans have a long history in the Black Hills. After conquering the Cheyenne in 1776, the Lakota took over the territory of the Black Hills, which became central to their culture. In 1868, the U.S. government signed the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, exempting the Black Hills from all white settlement forever. However, when European Americans discovered gold there in 1874, as a result of George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Expedition, miners swept into the area in a gold rush. The US government reassigned the Lakota, against their wishes, to other reservations in western South Dakota. Unlike most of South Dakota, the Black Hills were settled by European Americans primarily from population centers to the west and south of the region, as miners flocked there from earlier gold boom locations in Colorado and Montana.

South Dakota (i/ˌsaʊθ dəˈkoʊtə/; locally [ˌsɑʊθ dəˈko̞ɾə]) is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States. It is named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux Native American tribes. South Dakota is the 17th most extensive, but the 5th least populous and the 5th least densely populated of the 50 United States. Once the southern portion of the Dakota Territory, South Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889, simultaneously with North Dakota. Pierre is the state capital and Sioux Falls, with a population of about 165,000, is South Dakota's largest city.
South Dakota is bordered by the states of North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana. The state is bisected by the Missouri River, dividing South Dakota into two geographically and socially distinct halves, known to residents as "East River" and "West River". Eastern South Dakota is home to most of the state's population, and fertile soil in this area is used to grow a variety of crops. West of the Missouri, ranching is the predominant agricultural activity, and the economy is more dependent on tourism and defense spending. The Black Hills, a group of low pine-covered mountains sacred to the Sioux, are located in the southwest part of the state. Mount Rushmore, a major tourist destination, is located there. South Dakota experiences a temperate continental climate, with four distinct seasons and precipitation ranging from moderate in the east to semi-arid in the west. The ecology of the state features species typical of a North American grassland biome.

What trip to the Black Hills NF would be complete without a hike to Harney Peak. Harney Peak, at 7242 feet, is the tallest natural point in South Dakota and the tallest natural point in the US, east of the Rockies. Along the trail are many unusual rock formations and testimony to the startling devastation done to the Ponderosa pine forest by the pine beetle. At the top of the peak is a stone fire tower built during the Great Depression by CCC workers. The fire tower has a staircase and balconies for great viewing of the Black Hills down below. Harney Peak is the tallest point east of the Rocky Mountain range and is an important landmark in the Black Hills.
Black Hills National Forest, SD - On day 1 me and Steve Krewson started at the Willow Creek trail head on the North side of Harney Peak and took the shorter north side of Willow Creek trail #8 and connect to Harney Peak #9. After gaining an est. elevation of 2,200 ft. we finally arrived at Harney Peak and toured the fire tower while surrounded by a surreal fog that quickly moved in. We weren't able to see much of the landscape up there but we did see 2 mountain goats and some awesome weather. Then we headed towards Sylvan Lake all downhill and only 1,100 ft. elevation change. Along the way we saw Little Devil’s Tower and found a dependable water source on the Harney Peak #9 trail just a couple yards from where it turns off for the Lost Cabin Spur trail. There's a bridge so you can't miss i...

While Mount Rushmore is the most well-known attraction in the Black Hills of South Dakota, there are lots of great things to see and do here. We just scratched the surface on this easy, one-day scenic drive. Although Yellowstone National Park is probably the most famous place to see bison (buffalo), Custer State Park has one of the largest publicly-owned herds in the world, roaming freely throughout the park and often stopping traffic along the the road. Connecting Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Iron Mountain Road is a work of art in itself. The highway passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Black Hills and includes three tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the distance. The road is famous for its "Pigtail Bridges" that allow travelers to g...

I put this collage of photos together from a hike to the top of Harney Peak in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This is an easy/moderate hike of about 7 miles with spectacular views of the Black Hills from the top. There are several trails to the peak allowing for loops and thru hikes of the Black Elk Wilderness. This hike is a loop of trail #9 up and trail #4 down. If you are in the Black Hills area and looking for a way to spend a morning or afternoon, I highly recommend this hike. Free trail maps are avalable at all Custer State Park entrances.
